The longer pipe gets heated up from the engine compartment. Warming the air as it travels down the pipe. Negating the use of the cold air system. Like he said, little increase of any at all. The louder intake sound makes you feel like its faster. They know that they're doing selling these things.

Just FYI, most engines have adaptive tuning, based on the air to fuel ratio, which get altered when doing a CAI, the ECU adjust as needed by itself.
@justindelvalle9179
@justindelvalle9179 2 жыл бұрын
This couldnt be more false. Many modern engines have parameters in the ECU which pertain to MAF scaling and the size of the intake tubing. When you change the diameter of the piping that the MAF sits in but dont change the scaling in the ECU, you change the Grams per second airflow which will effect the engines ability to properly calculate fuel injector duty cycles from idle to redline. This means that lean at idle is extremely lean at redline, and lean is a good way to induce knock, and burns holes in pistons due to excessive heat. The ecu can only correct so much until it maxes out certain values and then it gives up and turns the check engine light on. This could be triggered from anything from a high or low voltage/current or performance error for the MAF sensor or a correlation between MAF and MAP readings. This could also trigger a rich or lean code for the A/F ratio sensor due to the extra airflow that the ecu cant compensate for. Blanket statements are dangerous when it comes to things like this.

But I bet you if I hooked a wideband Sensor up to it, and datalog it, guarantee your engine is running lean and likely pulling timing as well. Sorry but from a tuning standpoint you dont have a leg to stand on. Yes YOU may not have had any issues because its within what the ecu parameters can correct for but not ALL cars are like this. And after tuning enough shitbox Hondas, i have seen the vast majority of CAI run lean above 3k rpm and pull timing.

From my experience true cold air intake goes all the way down to where the bumper is that way there’s no heat soak and should be made out of plastic or silicone to keep heat off. They also sell water cover mesh that you put around the filter to keep it from getting soaked and who ever is dumb enough to sit their car on a deep puddle/flood or drive through a flood where their filter emerges in shouldn’t be modifying their car.

Well, I had a mk5 VW GTI like the one in this video from 2006-2020. I brought it in to the dealership for my first free oil change. When the service dude pulled off the engine cover he broke it at the rear left grommet and didn't tell me. The mk5 GTI is a really good car but there is one major design flaw - the air filter is part of the engine cover and the air passes through it! I didn't know it had a hole until I took it off when I changed my spark plugs. By then the warranty had expired. Turns out the leak messed up the air system making the car jumpy. When I replaced the engine cover it drove a lot better. Because of its multiple parts, a new mk5 GTI engine cover is $350. So I went to ebay and a kid who bought one of the those cold air intakes no longer needed his stock engine cover and I bought it for $35 plus shipping. So cold air intakes are good for one thing - devaluing stock engine covers. Because of that experience I stopped going to dealerships, even for the free service, and do it myself with one exception. I got a new car and the stereo screen blacked out. The stereo still worked but you couldn't control it. The dealer replaced the screen under warranty.

Yes. As long as it has a port to relocate the mass af sensor on a modern car, then typically your ecu can adjust for it. The sensor just needs to have a couple inches of straight airflow before the air hits it.. I know mine (2016 accord v6) did just fine when I put a SRI on it. I still did a flash tune soon after, but otherwise it was running fine. No appreciable loss in power with just an intake. Sounds amazing though lol.

I put a knock off K&N in my mazda 6. Then kept putting back in the ordinal stuff. Did it 5 times and made sure to record mileage and made sure time engine ran and sure that matched on a MPG basis. Kept track starting with a full tank to empty each time and did it when I knew my driving route would be identical and drove the same way. Consistently had a 5-6 MPG increase. With stop and go traffic it might have been less or worse, my driving was 80-90% on cruise control at 60 and 65. Was getting 33mpg instead of 27-28mpg. I think Mazda listed it as 30mpg on highway. I was told to make sure I disconnect the battery for at least 10 minutes when I switched air intake. I believe it had to do with it causing the MAS to reset itself. Idk if that mattered but that's what I did🤷🏿‍♂️. Also have no idea if power was increased, didn't care. Only got it for gas mileage.

Scotty, you didn't bring up the fact that stock intakes have resonator tubes and/or boxes that are specifically tuned lengths and volumes to take advantage of flow reverberation caused by the intake valves closing, producing more power and efficiency through scavenging than even no intake tube and filter at all. Every time I've removed a stock intake for something else on an otherwise stock engine, it caused a loss of power as well as economy. The engineers with huge R+D budgets do actually know what their doing. Power and economy are hugely competitive between brands. They are, in fact, incentivized to maximize power and economy (huge selling points). A stock intake will never be a restriction on a stock engine (they have no reason to do that). Without a full exhaust AND a cam change to take advantage of it, there really is no need to change the intake duct. On an internally stock engine, you can't do better than the stock one. The stock ones from every single manufacturer have been pulling real cold air (isolated completely from the engine bay) from the factory since the 80s, lol. You DO NOT want to get rid of the factory resonator setup in the intake under any circumstances..... unless you have a heavily modified (internally) engine and a proper dyno tune to match.

The CEL can be that your car is not used to a lot air at specific rpms. For my camry at idle it doesn’t pull in much air so it’s tuned for low air flow from factory. Putting an intake on will increase that air and might exceed what the maf can read. It’s not that it can’t read it you either need a tune so the maf can read it or place an insert to avoid getting a CEL. At higher speeds there’s no issue. I mean that at idle if everything is tuned for low air flow then having high air flow at idle may set off CEL without a tune. Yes you can gain HP without a tune.

A cold air intake system will only benefit with a supporting ECU tune or "piggyback" such as the JB4 tuner, which is designed to increase boost (on turbocharged and supercharged cars) and therefore needs more air intake capability, which a higher flow intake system provides. From this, you will see more gains from the tune with an upgraded intake system, given that you have proper heat insulation and have some sort of heat wall to prevent as much heat in the engine bay being sucked into the intake.

K&N engineering tunes the cold air intake to your vehicle, not the vehicle to the cold air intake. They also come with a heat shield to keep the heat from the engine from getting sucked in to the intake. No a GTI can remain stock with an addition of a cold air intake. The gains are negligible, ~5hp. With a tune however, you'll gain ~10hp but tunes could push more with the help of a cold air intake. Example, my car atm has 325hp and 420 nm (309 lbft) and runs stock intake, just by adding a cold air intake, I could dial up the boost from 24.6 psi to 27-28 psi. Edit: I install a cold air intake a day after the comment. I dyno'd it again and made 350 hp (320 whp) and 472.5 nm (348 lb ft) at 28 psi of boost
