Why Delta Airlines Fleet Is Airbus-heavy?? Goodbye Boeing...
Delta Air Lines has expanded its fleet with an order for 20 Airbus A3 50-1000’s, set to become the largest aircraft in its lineup and the carrier's new flagship, featuring top-tier premium offerings. This acquisition means Delta will fly a broad range of Airbus' current models, from the compact A2 20-100 to the expansive A3 50-1000. Unlike its American counterparts, which favor Boeing, Delta's choice reflects a strategic preference for the European manufacturer's aircraft. So, find out in this episode of Flig Avia: why Delta Airlines is choosing Airbus over Boeing?
But before we start, please hit the subscribe button if you haven’t already so you'll be the first to see our next videos. Now, let’s dive in!
Why Delta Airlines Fleet Is Airbus-heavy?? Goodbye Boeing...
First reason
When it comes to the first reason, we need to trace back to the merger between Delta and Northwest Airlines at the end of 2009. Historically, Delta predominantly operated Boeing aircraft, including models like the 7 4 7 and triple 7, and continues to fly the 7 1 7, 7 3 7, 7 5 7, and 7 6 7. And then, a significant portion of Delta's A3 30 fleet came from Northwest Airlines after the merger. Satisfied with its performance, Delta expanded its A3 30 fleet with additional orders. This decision marked a pivotal shift in Delta's preference from Boeing to Airbus aircraft.
Why Delta Airlines Fleet Is Airbus-heavy?? Goodbye Boeing...
In a statement from 20 15, celebrating the arrival of the first A3 30-300 ordered by Delta, the airline highlighted that the new A3 30-300’s were 15-25 percent more fuel-efficient per seat compared to the older Boeing 7 6 7-300’s and 7 4 7-400’s they were replacing.
"The new A330-300s are 15-25% more fuel efficient per seat than the Boeing 767-300s and 747-400s they will replace."

They obviously think of their customers safety and their own economics. Its nice to see an American airline, not be swayed by all the US Governments aids to buying American. To be honest, if I were a CEO of an Airline, I would be very wary of that Boeing management ethos,(Wall Street first, safety last) it could come back to bite me very hard.

@Kevinksk92 Well, the 777X is sort of a combatant to the A350, but it still hasn't been certified, and it's less efficient. They both operate in the same market, and the A350 just does it better. The only thing the 777X has on the A350 is seat capacity, but it's not a large difference

It must be noted that Richard Anderson was the CEO of Northwest during its conversion to Airbus 330 widened jets. He left Northwest and was eventually Delta's CEO when the Delta/Northwest merger happened. He remained the CEO and was a strong influence in transitioning Delta from a predominately Boeing fleet to a predominately Airbus fleet. While Northwest had 747s and 757s from Boeing, the workhorse of their fleet was the DC-9. They also were gradually introducing narrowbody Airbus aircraft to their mainline fleet. Delta was predominately Boeing but also had MD 80s aircraft in its fleet preserver.

The retirement of the old 767-300 will be a mixed bag as the 1st class seats are the worse. But economy 2-3-2 seating is preferred.

There are a number of arlines in the US that choose predominantly Airbus aircraft. Namely JETBLUE, SPIRIT, FRONTIER, BREEZE; and there were VIRGIN AMERICA and ALLEGIANT, the former being swallowed by Seattle based and Boeing minded ALASKA Airlines, the latter having placed a large B order lately. The largest of all Airbus narrowbody fleets in the US is owned not by DELTA, but by AMERICAN (about 480 units plus 135 more on order). United has 179 A320 family planes in its fleet and 207 more incoming. Airbus is indeed strong at DELTA, but its influence in the procurement strategies of US based airline companies is much stronger than suggested by the video.

If you order a Boeing you just join a massive waiting list, followed by terrible uncertainty over groundings and shit quality. Only 38 737s are produced each month. Only 5 787s are produced each month (!). Because of quality problems. And Airbus' are just better aircraft - more efficient and also more popular with passengers and crew.

One may think an American carrier may opt for American Boeing, if air bus could provide a more viable solution, also with the quality issue of Boeing, having a foreign supplier may sound logical. I am certain there are American components in air bus aircrafts.

what are you saying makes sense going from the 330 to 350 what it doesn’t make sense to go from the 767 to the A330. The 767 to the 787 for pilots familiarity makes more sense to go to the 787-9 that makes sense.

The video says it all: Delta merged with an airline with a huge Airbus fleet in Northwest. As such, it made more sense for Delta to continue flying Airbus planes. And it appears Delta may be looking at large A330-900neo and A320 Family orders to tet rid of the older Airbus jets.

@Kevinksk92 They are the most advanced airplanes for midium range distance already proved not to mention the cost for fuel and maintenance. America airlines just bought around 100 just last month and the Canadian Porter Airline did the same. Delta should not put all its cards on Airbus, just saying.
@KlausErmecke
@KlausErmecke Ай бұрын
@@apapahristodoulou Well, the airlines currently in trouble are those who put all their cards on Boeing! Regarding Embraer, we should notice that their (apparently good) aircraft are positioned BELOW the A220 segment: they have a narrow fuselage, providing only 2-2 seating, and have much less range. The A220 offer 2-3 seating which allows for a larger PAX capacity without stretching the tube too much. DELTA has been building a lot of additional operational flexibility by radically reducing the number of aircraft families (and corresponding pilot and cabin crew pools) in their fleet, with a few more to go. There is no need for DELTA to "lufthansadize" their fleet and start again buying everything what is around.
