I was lucky to ride those monsters several times, from Calais to Dover and back. You will never forget the noise they make, but the ride was super cool and fast.

Florida Man here. Can confirm, about 10 years ago, there was a hovercraft with damaged skirt for sale for like 6k on the side of the road around where I live.

I think they are popular for things like swamp land in Florida. You might have lots of rapidly changing depth of water, weeds and what not that your boat would get tied up into. Why deal with all that mess? Just hover over all of it. ;)

I had to look it up but the logo on the side of it is similar to a Bentley logo but it's the logo for Saunders-Roe Limited - British aerospace and marine-engineering company. Apparently Christopher Cockerell designed the hovercraft technology but Saunders-Roe is the company who put the hovercraft into production. SR.N1 = Saunders Roe Nautical 1 The engines is an Alvis Leonides radial piston engine.

The Texas-based defence firm delivered the first of 14 planned SSCs to the navy in 2020 as part of the Ship to Shore Connector program. The program envisions a fleet of hovercraft that require fewer operators, are easier to maintain, and have a greater payload-carrying capacity. At 74 tons, the SSCs can carry over 10 tons more than its predecessor - including an Abrams tank - giving it an advantage over the LCAC during an amphibious assault. The craft can move at 35 knots and carry 145 combat-armed Marines. Its skirt design reduces weight and drag, while corrosion-resistant aluminium materials are more easily available and decrease maintenance costs. Peace out

Utah here, yah.. our police department, fire department, highway patrol, and wildlife people have them. They are registered as an off-road water device and are far faster to start up than boat or raceing across the salt flats with so yah we have them. I think 20+ are government one last I checked

Vomit comets lol… but they looked great, still think there is a way they could be used, I don’t know what, but it’s a shame to give up on them. Living near Dover it was normal as a family to drive to the cliffs, and have a picnic and watch the ferries, hovercraft etc go back and forth … but we were easily entertained back them 🤪

Hovercrafts are still operating in the U.K. Although I have a fear of the sea I traveled on one from Portsmouth to Isle of Wight. Very fast form of transport

Good educational video. First flying car right there. I know they use boats with fans in the everglades. I do not think those have rubber skirts.

It would be cool to see what commercial hovercraft built with today's best tech would be like. Fly by wire would sort out the steering heavyness. New materials would mitigate weight and strength. CAD would yield stronger, lighter designs. Better engines would have better power and efficiency. So much could be done, just probably not at a reasonable cost. It would probably take a Saudi prince to bankroll it.

Like the Soviet designed "Zubr class" beast of a hovercraft. It's big, it's impractical, I love it. It's only downside is that it's Soviet/Russian made. 😅

Why don’t your videos show up in my feed? Is it just me? This is the first one to show up for a while. I’ll go watch and like those I’ve missed but thought I’d mention it so if not just me you’re aware.

They were, and are cool. Definitely have their unique place, and purpose. Not really viable for mass transit, over only water though.
