The story behind the murder of senior Sinn Fein official, Denis Donaldson, a paid agent of UK security services in 2005. Four months after he made a public statement on RTE TV, he was shot dead near Glenties, Donegal, at a family cottage. HIs family have taken legal action against the Garda Siochana for the return of a journal he was apparently writing at time of death. In July 2016, a 74 year old man was charged with withholding information about Denis Donaldson's murder. An inquest into Denis Donaldson's death has been adjourned over 19 times. Gardai say they continue to investigate. On May 6, 2018, Sunday Times journalist John Mooney reported that police in Scotland had secretly recorded a dissident Republican confessing to the murder. The confession was recorded in a prison were the republican is serving a lengthy sentence for an unrelated offence. According to the report, a prominent Republican from Derry is believed to have directed the operation, which was carried out by three others. The motive was reported as revenge for Denis Donaldson's betrayal of the IRA and Sinn Fein and a propoganda boost for the Real IRA.
