My late brother in law was quite high up in the GCHQ hierarchy at that time. This is what he told me : He, along with his colleagues, were part of a section dealing with the monitoring of Irish terrorists. At some point they were confident that they had identified the bomb run and the target ( Omagh. ) This information was then passed up the chain of command to Francis Richards ( GCHQ Director ) who then was required to notify Downing Street, which he did. He in fact had to request permission from Blair himself to share what intel they had gathered. The word came back via Jonathan Powell, Blair's Chief of Staff : "Do nothing. Sit on it." My brother and his colleagues were sickened beyond belief. If he had've took it upon himself to tip off the RUC, he would have been charged under the Official Secrets Act Information came back later that the main reason that Blair ( after consultation with US President Clinton ) had blocked the sharing of intel was because the British Government needed an atrocity in order to strengthen the fledgeling peace process.

It is strange that both the IRA and the loyalits did very little, if nothing at all, to target the chiefs of their enemy organizations. Everybody in South Armagh knew Robin Jackson and where he lived, but no one targeted him in any way, even when he was alone and armed only with a handgun. The same we can say about IRA commanders, whose names and houses were quite well known by people living in those areas.

Interesting observation. I read where the Loyalist and Republican paramilitaries colluded in racketeering and extortion and split the earnings. So, killing each other would have cut into profits. I just cannot recall the source.

The amount of time people spend mythologising and eulogising these people astonishes me. He was a street thug running some two bit rackets in some run down estates who didn't have the self awareness to realise the earring made him look stupid. Even as a crime boss he was second rate. Don't waste a moment of yourt time on him. What actually rankles me is that the journalist doesn't call these people out on the bulls**t. The wife, for example, if you take even half of the other comments posted here, was repeatadly abused by Gray and was fully aware of and complicit with, his invovlement in crime and the UDA, yet she spins a yarn about him being a kind man and having no knowledge of his criminal activities. If the journalist has an ounce of competence, he knows that's not true, but he gives her a platform to basically sanitise the reputation of a domestic abuser and a murderous thug.

It's the other boy who was in charge the whole time anyway, McIntyre is a sensationalist, the Shankill feud (UVF vs UFF C Company Sad Dogs unit) documentary is good because the guy goes to both sides and then calls them on their hypocrisy. But because he's such a good and respected Belfast journalist he's the only one they would really talk to, even if he was a pain in their arse constantly questioning them about their funds, dodgy connections and their own quotes with savvy and ballsy journalism. He makes a complete dick out of Adair countless times
