Dr Suzannah Lipscomb takes us back to Tudor times in search of the grisly household killers of the Medieval period.
It was a great age of exploration and science where adventurers returned from the New World with exotic goods previously unknown in Europe. An era in which the newly emergent middle classes had, for the first time, money for luxuries and early consumer goods, many of which contained hidden dangers. Suzannah discovers that in Tudor houses the threat of a grisly, unpleasant death was never far away in a world (and a home) still mired in the grime and filth of the medieval period - and she shows how we still live with the legacy of some of these killers today.

I spent over 10 years living in an old house. One thing I can personally attest to is how very dangerous those stairs that "go around corners" are. Trust me on this, run straight stairs to a landing, then change direction 90 degrees. Do NOT use stairs that constantly change angle and are wider at one side than the other. I guarantee there will be dangerous falls.

@@Stevie-J Funny, you mention she's gorgeous, then say "and it's Dr Lipscomb". It's not like being knighted. It probably took 6-8 years of university to get that doctorate. She has a Doctorate of Philosophy from Oxford. Though I did think it was for Tudor History originally, since she has such a heavy fascination for it. But yes, she is drop dead gorgeous with the figure to match. Yes, she does catch the eye. Guilty.

There was a hot day where I was helping set up our camping site. I was struggling from the heat. Once camp was set up we went down to the lake, I only went in ankle deep and felt all the heat in my body get sucked out. Could totally see myself finding a way to drown ten feet off shore lol.

Love this series! Had seen one done about the US furniture in 50s n 60s. It was a wealth of knowledge that, I often recall. So, I am thrilled to see it's an actual series with the same narrator. Shes edgy, but still classy, young but mature; a perfect casting for this docuseries! Well directed, researched and written. Thank you to the entire team whom, worked so hard to help us attain more knowledge. I am in your debt.🤗😊

Having dealt with extremely significant teeth issues after 40 years of never having had a cavity, having braces for 3 years, etc...I can say from experience that tooth pain due to infection is horrendously awful, and it can come on quickly. The pain I remember experiencing was terrible, it hurt so much, that I couldn't sit still until the pain was resolved with an injection that numbed that part of my mouth, and me starting to take antibiotics right away. I had to go in for multiple injections the day that I'm thinking about, and the next day, if I'm remembering correctly, to get me through the days without pain so that I could function, and I had to take pain medication at night, until the intense pain ceased. Antibiotics can/do work pretty quickly, thankfully. I will never forget the pain that I dealt with over at least a year of having to have major work done in my mouth. The thinking was that I'd picked up a bacteria in my mouth that I couldn't get rid of, and it destroyed the enamel of my teeth, and did it pretty quickly. This is something I never talk about with most people, because it was a traumatic, humiliating, painful experience that I wouldn't wish on anyone. Supposedly, once teeth rot, there can be a loss of any feeling, but getting to that point, if someone does ever get to that point, does take some period of time during which someone with tooth damage like that skull with the decayed teeth91aq would suffer

dear goodness. I hope since then you recovered somewaht. I had a dear friend, handsome fellow, but watching his teeth grow browner with the month. After politely asking about his teeth, actually suggesting he d see a dentist, he d say he knew, but didnt have the money for decent dental care, since appearently regardless of his health and basic dental insurence, this sort of care wasnt insured. Which I found appalling in a rich country as the Netherlands, where you pay quite a lot for health insurance if you are of limited means. I discussed with my partner and said `this will not do`. After insisting on my friend to see a dentist urgently, he finally took the courage to ask us to lend some money for the dentist. We didnt have a lot to spend either but we sure did. Being 35 or so and losing a great part of your teeth seemed so outerworldly to me in a rich, civilised society...

The illustration at 20:30. Can't be too sure, but the onlookers at the right seem to include a priest; the man praying. People in some rural areas not that long ago still believed in getting the clergy, not firefighters using up-to-date equipment when there was a fire. The clergy got the credit for putting out fires even when the fire department came.

@@veronicastevens1614 People nowadays know the connection between sugar and increase in weight. They also know about the health problems caused by obesity. In general when people talk about sticking to a diet plan, they sometimes jokingly say, 'I've been good; I stuck to my diet', as if they are like a child being good and following orders from their medical doctor. Conversely, when they do something like eating sugar or any other food which causes weight gain, they sometimes say, 'I was naughty; I had a bar of chocolate. So a lump of sugar with many calories can jokingly lead to people saying 'This feels naughty'. Moreover, I don't know why but for some reason I feel that Dr Lipscomb is a lady who watches her weight and tries not to eat too much sugar ...
@AlpenTree
@AlpenTree 2 жыл бұрын
@@veronicastevens1614 maybe because the way they are describing these candies is that they are made out of 100% sugar or perhaps 90% sugar with some food coloring or cinnamon added. How often do we eat pure sugar today? Even sugar based candies like gumdrops or Welch fruit candies are made in a base of gelatin (haha which is protein, funny I never thought of it that way before!), With some kind of juice or other flavoring. Maybe her saying it was naughty was because of this almost pure sugar aspect?
