00:00 Wearing Sneakers: Introduction
Regardless of where you are in your journey of clothing, sneakers are unanimously recognized all over the world with the style being evermore prevalent as today’s “go-to” footwear choice.
We’ve been able to determine eight reasons why sneakers are worn more now than they ever have been:
01:08 Reasons: 1. Utility
02:51 2. Comfort
04:09 3. Fashion
05:06 4. Increased Formality
06:34 5. Peer Pressure
07:22 6. Status
08:27 7. Cost
10:00 8. Less Leather
One thing is quite obvious; at least for now, sneakers are here to stay. They offer a wide range of benefits for many people and create a unique contrast to the realm of the dress shoe.
Ultimately, sneakers aren’t actually bad shoes. They were created to serve a purpose, and they do that very well. The fact that they’ve become acceptable to wear outside of the gym simply means there are more sartorial choices to enjoy, which should be a good thing.

Small town in Croatia here. Sometimes when I go for a walk I notice that 2/3 of people wear white sneakers. Like they're on sale somewhere. Or maybe there was a giveaway I didn't hear about. Or a truck full of white sneakers had an accident somewhere nearby and everyone grabbed a pair. I don't think all those people are sportsmen either, not counting watching sports on TV.

Maybe im crazy but wearing a shoe made of plastic and foam and synthetic and then having to replace it every year is a strange approach to sustainability. Leather goods are certainly more sustainable as, ya know, they can be farmed from animals infinitely (although yes theyre non-vegan)

odd statement, if your exercised you would know most last less than a year, if you don't exercise and wear trainers, probs 3 - 4 years depending on quality etc. My running trainers, last 4-7 months, cycling shoes longer 14 months max without needing something done to them. Yes leather is more sustainable, but no one with common sense or a desire to improve themselves physically would wear them for training.

I don't mean this as a criticism of the video, but we should remember that gentlemen of yore clearly distinguished between sports and athletics. Sports includes shooting, fishing, and golf. Athletes had specialized footwear, for which the modern improvements are very good. Sneakers were really best for the gymnasium, and as as such were athletic shoes, rather than sporting wear.

Sneakerhead approval is rather simple: thrift 4 pairs of Converse in various bold colours (not black and white), and match them to a same colour floral shirt. Guaranteed succes. O wait, it gets much wider approval and the sneakerheads just think you are a snob with your floral shirt.

Sneakers are a modern staple that every man needs a few pairs of in his wardrobe. Sneakers are needed for anytime you are going to active like the gym, yard work, exercising or even for days where you are doing really high step counts. Have 1 pair for general exercise, another pair yard work or any dirty work and another clean pair of minimal leather sneakers (that pair with any outfit) for days you do heaps of steps around the city, you are sightseeing or just want to be more casual etc.

I bought a pair of Chuck Taylors as my first-ever (since childhood) pair of sneakers. Dress shoes just weren't made-to-do for swordfencing and pickleball. I don't mind the look. My only complaint is that the tongue gets stuck in the sides of the shoes while I'm trying to win a duel; I have to fish the thing out. The looks are pretty unparalleled for a retro-style pair of sneakers, so call me a patron. They look really nice with my white trousers and red and white fencing jacket, along with my white tennis sweater and shorts while doing pickleball. They scratch that 1930s itch even for those occasions where I can't wear tailoring and ties.

For everyone in this section: I've found that what's comfortable depends on what you're used to. For those rare occasions I go jacketless, even in summer, it feels somewhat odd to have wind on my arms. I also dislike shoes without heels. I had to get a pair of sneakers for fencing and am still not used to the lack of heel. It throws me off balance! The only real complaint I have about suiting comfort is the tie around the neck. It's not the worst feeling (especially since I wear shirt collars a couple sizes too big), but an open collar is definitely more comfortable. As for shoes, though, I'm a dress shoe devotee. Sneakers just feel weird. I can see, however, how suits would be uncomfortable if you're not used to them. The reverse definitely applies.

I never considered sneakers to be comfortable. To be able to run with them, they have to be quite tight on your feet. That's fine for the gym,, even necessary for running, but isn't comfortable for walking or in the office. Informal shoes like the kind you get from Hush Puppies or Clark's or a dozen other brands are much more comfortable in those scenarios, as I'm sure are the more formal oxfords. And actual hiking shoes are far better for hiking if you don't want to hurt your ankle. So I only wear sneakers to the gym or the occasional jog.

Yeah, I think it's really unmentioned just how timeless some of the more classic sneaker designs are. Patterns like the Converse All-Star have remained virtually unchanged for decades. IMO a pair of black Converse is just as essential to one's footwear collection as any set of Oxfords: they're the casual footwear equivalent of the little black dress.

The unfortunate thing is the designs are generally the same, but the quality in the sneakers has gone way down in big brands.

Simple, first you can get a comfortable shoe for less than 100$, which would not be the case with "most" dress shoes (you can at an higher price point obviously). They're not necessary short-lived if you wear them in rotation. Also, it's more versatile if you take a neutral color, like you can't wear an oxford with bermudas, and most jeans. Also, less maintenance is needed also for those shoes. Finally, it's not compatible with active parents lifestyle,. For my part, I have small kids and usually dress smart casual with higher-end polos, chinos and/or jeans, I won't bring some dress shoes to the park to run/play my kids, it just doesn't make sense, especially since now there's other options available. At the end, it is just more simple to wear sneakers/sports/walking shoes. Stylish? Probably not, but there's other factors to take in.

Interesting points - it's always good to think about other factors. Regarding dress shoes under $100, what are your views on buying vintage/pre-owned dress shoes that come under that price point, but still have a high quality?

@@gentlemansgazette Many thanks for your response. Regarding your question, I have discovered, at least in part because of this channel, the wonderful world that is used quality clothing and I have several pieces that I've found in the last couple of years. However, and I am not a foot doctor, I am a bit more hesitant regarding used shoes as quality shoes takes the shape of an individual feet when worn and would probably be ill-fitted to me if I've purchased them as I've probably have slightly different feet/features than their previous owner. Therefore, I tempt to stay away from those. Also, and I didn't made a lot of research to be honest, and the prices/discount weren't that great unless the shoes were in terrible shape, which would probably mean extra costs to bring them to a cobbler. There are lots of better deals in other categories of clothing in my mind (sports jackets, knitwear, trousers, ect.) Best regards!

Thanks for the video! But why should men stop wearing sneakers? - Is is way harder to keep them clean - it is harder to repair them - their style changes a lot - you need to buy more of them - it is easy to look like you try really hard to get rid 20+ years of your age. Long story short: Sneakers are the pastel-colored wide suits of the 80s - today...

sneakers are the natural evolution of human footwear. In human history, shoes were worn to protect foot from injury. With limited resources and technology, shoes were optimized for protection and longevity, rather than comfort. Later, the nobility and upper class of society use shoes as signifying marker of status, giving birth to dressier shoes. With the discovery of rubber and polymer technologies, shoes can be made more comfortable than before, leaving traditional dress shoes confined to situation where conservativeness and formality are needed.
