00:00 Men Stop Wearing Ties Introduction
Neckties have gone from being a nearly mandatory accessory to an often-overlooked article. This change is all the more dramatic because of the position once held by the tie.
01:00 Ties in (Recent) History
It was originally associated primarily with Croatian mercenaries in the 17th century and evolved from a “Croat” into a “cravat” and by the 20th century into the tie as we know it today.
02:45 Contributing Factors: 1. Restrictive Dress Codes
04:08 2. The Cultural Revolution of the 1960s
06:01 3. The Rise of Business Casual
07:20 4. An Increasingly Casual World
09:10 5. Tie Fashion Trends
12:47 6. Popular And Media Perception of the Tie Today
Overall, it can be said that nowadays, men, in general, dress specifically for themselves and not for others with whom they are sharing the time or occasion.
15:44 Our Take on Ties
We’d like to conclude by saying that the purpose of this video is not to bemoan the decline of tie-wearing. We endorse that men should dress for themselves but, as with most things, there are limits.
If you love Classic Style, ties will undoubtedly spark excitement as one way to express yourself. Of course, there are circumstances when a tie should really be worn as a matter of respect for the occasion.
17:24 Conclusion
It should come as no surprise that we think ties are remarkably versatile and supremely creative ways to accent your outfits. Adding color and texture as a personal expression that will make you feel confident and creative, not confined and constricted.

Question: Ties are seen as a symbol of old, outdated conformity. But now, if everybody is expected to wear casual clothes at all times, everywhere they go, isn't that the new conformity?

You sir have an exellent point! Maybe it is us, the gentleman that are now the rebellion against the principles of the modern age. In an age of feminist men, temporary relationships, synthetic fabrics etc I think the suit stands up for more classical traditions. People who are choosing the suit as not just a statement of fashion but one of ethics in a world falling apart in many aspects. Some modern movements are a step forward but overall it seems things got carried away and sailed backwards.

As someone who's rocking 80-s metalhead style for about 20 years I confirm. I can put on leathr, spikes, chains, patched denim vest and no one cares. But when I put on my trenchcoat and fedora - I really stand out from the croud and notice people secretly staring at me. This wired era of post-modernism is putting everything upside down.

I have hundreds of ties. I feel more confident & special wearing a tie and love mixing shirts, jackets, colors and textures. I don't wear one to the office every day but I sporadically wear one a few days per week. People used to say, "wow are you going on an interview?" I grew up watching old 50’s & 60’s tv shows after school. Long before I mastered tying shoes, I could tie a necktie. I always assumed I would grow up and wear ties to my job. I tried at my first job but eventually stopped because I was the only one wearing a tie. I LOVE ties! I sometimes just practice different knots with all the ties I have but never wear. Then again, I also assumed I’d wear a fedora tie to work. ☹️

Enjoyable, educational video. Thank you. I remember in the 1950s my Jr. High’s Custodian said he wore a tie “because all work is honorable”. I wear a tie maybe once a week now. I use a short tie clip to hold its tail to my shirt, concealed behind the tie. With the tail through the keeper and then clipped, the tie is controlled and its fabric isn’t affected by a bar, tack, or chain. And I keep my beard short enough for the knot to show.

On the matter of comfort: it is not the tie itself that feel uncomfortable. It's the shirt collar! Most men wear RTW shirts and they rarely fit. All necks are unique! I used to wear a necktie at work every single day in the beginning of my career. I enjoyed buying ties but I hated to wear them because I felt strangled all the time. These days, I only wear bespoke or MTM shirts, wear the cutter/tailor has taken every detail into account. It's a different world! If the shirt fits - wearing a necktie is like wearing wax polish on the tip on your shoes!

I have over a hundred beautiful ties, many of them gifts from people I love, about whom I am reminded when I wear them every time I look down. For years I went without because I feared I was making other people uncomfortable by dressing more formally then they did. I recently decided that's their problem not mine. I love my ties and I love looking good. I've also discovered the ascot. I think they look elegant in a more casual way, allowing for an open-neck shirt.

Another fantastic video. Last year, I decided to look for a new job in my field (legal compliance). I wore a tie (including a jacket and a pocket square) in every interview over the course of several months during 2021. I found it difficult to get a job offer, so my friend told me to stop wearing a tie to my interviews. My second interview not wearing a tie, I received a job offer. It’s sad that the tie is viewed as stuffy and old-fashioned even though it shows a lot about your personality. That’s why I appreciate your work and these videos.

The dress code at my work is black or grey polo shirt and black pants (slacks or- more commonly worn- jeans). When off work, I'll dress up in a suit, tie and all! It feels good to wear something nice after a day of donning dark, stained clothes and to take the time to match and pair articles together, including the tie. I nearly always receive compliments on my outfit and have even been told by a few, "It's nice to see someone dress up." I have yet to meet anyone who seems to actually associate the tie and other more traditional menswear articles with stuffyness and the business world; the closest I've come to that is my tween cousin thinking such clothing as being "too old". Everyone else has shown appreciation.

Speaking from experience of being a shabbily dressed man that turned into a well dressed man. I used to do that because my shirts were too baggy and the waist of my pants was too low so when I would tuck my shirts they would keep getting untucked and would look unflattering (it's a negative feedback loop, companies make bad clothes because people buy bad clothes which makes companies make more bad clothes and so on). Once I got shirts that fit correctly and wore higher waisted pants (not to mention wearing shirt garters when I am not wearing a jacket) I actually love the way a tucked in shirt looks.

I used to do outdoor work with mentally disabled persons for almost a year. We picked up trash and did some gardening etc, so wearing a tie to work wouldn't have been practical. The most formal I could get was wearing an army surplus field shirt; thick cotton, so it was warm enough even when it rained and loose enough to allow movement and to fit a wool undershirt for colder months. I enjoyed doing outdoor work, but at the same time I was thinking that when I get a job where I can wear a formal shirt and a tie, I will. Sometimes people who don't know me ask me why I'm wearing a tie and if it's for a special occasion. For me it's also self-care; I'm worth it to wear a tie every day, if I want to. And I often do, but in the summertime it's often those Hawaii-shirts :D

On my opinion ties are an essential of a men‘s wardrobe. Whenever I wear a suit I wear a tie, because a without it, the suit wouldn’t be complete and the huge white spot that could be seen without a tie would look atrocious. When I wear combinations I usually wear ties, sometimes even the more flashy 1990s ties are working fine (these are perfect when you want to wear a tie, but it’s a very causal occasion, e.g going to play some bowling. Because they are somewhat casual). The only time I wear combinations without a tie is when it’s very hot (30 degrees and more) because then it’s too hot, but when I wear a suit, it could be 50+ degrees I would still wear a tie!

I have several ties in various colours and patterns that I will occasionally wear to work every so often basically just as an accessory to my outfit just to change things up. Always get compliments when I do as well. Ties may not be worn very often anymore but they are still viewed as stylish by most people.

I love wearing ties and even though I’ve been encouraged not to wear one, I do it anyway. Also, if you are looking for a good tie knot, I highly recommend the Pratt. It’s basically a simple knot that is versatile. Love the video and never be ashamed to dress up. My fashion role models are Steve Harvey, Barney Stinson and Randy Fenoli.

Very good insight and informative video. I am reminded of another trend in ties around the year 2000 - solid ties with a silky, nearly metallic look over a solid (often dark) shirt. Think the late great Regis from ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire?’.

I love Gentlemen's Gazette. I have taken a lot your points into my wardrobe and follow your advise as much as possible. Ties, however, are an exception. I have 30 ties and now being a 45 year old, I do not know if they are "worth it". They are an extremely uncomfortable accessories. One could argue that cufflinks or pocket squares are just decorations but unlike ties they do not stifle me.

@chrisblanc663

How do you mean uncomfortable? Like tight around your neck, or gets in the way when your moving? If it’s tight around your neck, the issue is with the collar, as you can loosen a tie. If the problem is that the tie gets in the way, swinging any such way you can get a tie bar, or my favorite, wear a vest that holds it back. (Maybe not the best idea if it’s really hot)

Audrey Hepburn had that lovely quote about dressing nicely for the person you are with. Whenever I go to see my diabetic consultant I always wear a tie as a mark of respect for his expertise. At school we used to have casual change on a Sunday afternoon, from 2-5 we would be required to remove our stiff detachable collars and change into an white shirt with an attached collar but still wearing our house ties, this was considered 'casual' - but still carried a mark of respect. Old habits die hard I guess.

I work in a convenience store, just a clerk, so people are shocked when they find out that im a suit and tie guy. Ties are some of my favorite things to shop for! I even worked at Jos A. Bank for a while and I've ended up with a collection of over 40 ties and bow ties, and I still buy more on occasion! Its a shame to me that some people view people who enjoy styles like this as being stuck up. You don't have to be stuck up to enjoy a style.

It has been my personal experience that when a man wears a proper tie, he is treated more properly, with professionalism and courtesy. I prefer more classic patterned or solid ties. The idea is that it will be fashionable today and 20 years from now. That being said, I have two JD Blades ties that I love and will always keep. Even though JD Blades could get out there on design, the two I have look good even today as they did 30 years ago.

@@captainash1297 Yes, I just can't do the formal dress up. Not my style at all. I love that sharp casual thing, and the people over here think that is formal. They tend to believe I'm off to the races, a wedding partly outdoors, or an event. That's what it's like nowadays, you dress differently and they think you're a theme park attendant whose uniform is intentionally a historical novelty - like a walking museum exhibit. It doesn't have to be like that.

Great video. My reason for tie wearing is that I can honestly give an explanation as long as this video about why I believe in them. I’ve learned many of those that are against, just jump over the question with either a laugh or embarrassment. I do understand it’s better for it to be a choice than force but I just never saw it as a trend, but more as a relief or excuse which, to me, is not suiting is designed for. Thanks for the video.

It doesn't quite bother men when men wear a collared shirt with one button undone, but when 2or3 are undone, it does look tacky, distasteful and unsightly. I like all kravats, and even don't mind the casual no-tie one button undone. Keep promoting all the best of classic menswear!

I do enjoy wearing a tie. But could never get into bow ties. Something about them just doesn’t sit well to me. Not sure if it just automatically feels like someone is trying too hard, the gap showing on the shirt that a normal tie usually keeps covered, or something else. It’s just not my cup of tea. I do want to own one, to learn how to tie them, so that I can teach my son some day how to tie his own bow tie, in case he ends up wanting to wear them.

There are a number of reasons why men, and society in general has stopped a lot of dress styles. Basically the worshiping and admiration of trash. Majority of average people prefer to look up to slobs. A large part of it is media influenced/driven. Its all about your surroundings, the type of influence you choose to follow. When I was growing up with much older siblings, I looked and admired the fashion and style of the early British bands. People of the media world that I admired growing up were men like Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Bruce Lee, and many more. Throughout High School, The Mod fashion of the 60's had a huge impact on me. I would dress tyme to tyme in traditional 60's Mod fashion. Nowadays, the average teenager and even adults look up to characters like Post Malone, Duck Dynasty, Pawn Star type people. The Walmart culture. T-Shirts with mystic wolves wearing over sized massive watches, lurking within a dream catcher, holding a axe while slaying a bottle of Jack Daniels that's driving a NASCAR adorn with over sized bling bling rims that blasting out of a Wrestling ring in a blaze of fire....
