Messiah de jude Brandon walked right passed the army of white walkers and they didn't even blink at him. It was the Night King that noticed him, and touched him in his vision. I believe the Night King has the ability to warg as well. Perhaps a stronger ability, since he was able to look and touch him in the vision.

Pure soul? Come on, the Walkers kill children. Why would they leave Sam, a Brother of the Night's Watch, the organization the Walkers have been opposed to for 8,000 years, alive? When they murder every wildling they come across, including the sickly, weak, elderly, and young, not killing a member of the enemy army (which can then be resurrected and added to the army of wights) doesn't make any sense. It's more likely that HBO thought the scene looked cool and builds tension.

Why would the Walkers care if any of this is written down? Ostensibly their goal is to kill every human and Child of the Forest. The Walkers have their own language, they could record their conquests themselves if they wanted to. I know this idea of "at the end of the series, it'll be revealed that it was SAMWELL NARRATING THE ENTIRE THING!" is appealing to fans who like the fairy tale endings, but if you think this is possible, "you haven't been paying attention".

Why? Since when? Seems to me anyone who escapes had to run like hell. Why let a Night Brother of all people escape? Their ancient enemy of 8,000 years, the only adversary that even believes the Walkers exist- of anyone to let go, a Brother would be the last. Why would it help the Walkers to make the humans more prepared? Wouldn't it be less costly to the Walkers if their attacks were swift and left no survivors, so no one could warn the next target?

Because the Walkers slept for 8,000 years; and after the first Long Night, they likely gained a great understanding of their enemy and the human mind. Being able to resurrect and control the dead humans also probably gives them access to some of the memories and experiences of that person. So when Weymar Royce got killed and turned into a Wight, the WWs likely gained all the knowledge Royce had, giving them a glimpse into the current state of human culture south of the Wall. GRRM loves his "hive mind/shared knowledge" trope, and it seems pretty clear that the WWs function with this on some level.

Are we talking about the show or the books? In the books, the Others aren't exactly practical. In the prologue, at least six of them surrounded Royce but only one fought him. The rest just stood to watch and interfered only when Royce fell. In the end, they hacked him to bits and let out a noise that resembled laughter. In a way, this shows the Walkers regard humans as inferior. They probably think men are no match against them, thus removing their perceived need of keeping their existence a secret. This same attitude was portrayed by the Dothraki. They regarded footmen as weak and good for nothing. Hence, when they faced the 3000 of Qohor, they decided to charge at the Unsullied's phalanx instead of flanking it. They were proud and overconfident, and so they lost. EDIT: While I don't recall an instant when they intentionally left survivors, it would kind of make sense if they did. The moment the Nights Watch receives reports about the Others, they'll send more men ranging north of the wall to investigate, and by doing so they're essentially supplementing the hordes of the undead with more wights and more information about what's up in the Seven Kingdoms.

That’s the only logical explanation. WW kill everyone they find to add them to the army of dead- women, children, sickly, kings, peasants: all of these can carry something sharp in their army. Perhaps it’s a method to spread rumors of the impending doom, which can cause tremendous strife among the kingdoms.

Michael Then... why let him go if it doesn't achieve any of their goals? It doesn't serve as a warning so the humans will prepare, and it doesn't help the army of dead grow. It's been a while since I read the prologue, but the Brother who escaped basically ran like hell. I think he hid in a tree for a while? Escaping them wasn't easy, they probably would've killed him if they could've.

Michael Oh yes, in the show and the books it appears that several WWs were in the area, watching all three Brothers. In show, Weymar is killed offscreen, the other two start running and one is beheaded. The WW throws the severed head at the man who goes on to escape. As he's fleeing, the Walkers could be heard "vocalizing" in their unique way, probably chasing Will. It should also be noted that in the book they seem somewhat more human, supposedly laughing and mocking humans in their "icicles grinding together" language. As for the symbols with the bodies, that's a show only concept. Based on what we've seen in the show, the WWs use symbols very similar to the symbols of the Children of the Forest; this makes sense, seeing as the Children are the creators of the WW in the HBO adaptation. For some reason, I doubt this will be the case in the future books- if we ever hear their true origins, it'll probably be far more complex and require a lot of puzzling out.

I think the real reason we had this scene on TV is because HBO thought it looked good and built tension. Based on everything we know about them (which isn't much), the Walkers kill EVERYONE, women, children, elderly- all to add bodies to the army of wights.

Dan B After Season 6 and 7, we kind of know what show White Walkers are- essentially they're an out of control super weapon created by the Children of the Forest to help them defeat the First Men. I don't have enough faith in the show writers to believe they'll come up with anything more interesting than that. They've been spoon-feeding us a lot of the most important info that answers many mysteries so I really don't think they'll execute a "what the Others really want" reveal with any skill.

have you been watching the show? till the recent episode 4 , Brann is being more distant in how hes treating and talking to his brothers (who he didnt saw since he was a little boy) yet he didnt acted super happy about it, having so much magic power that you CANNOT control entirely will eventually make him delusional and more distant, he still has a lot of traveling to do with his powers , and like 90% of it is Night King and Whites past , present and even future, were he sees himself as a upcoming danger because as stated, he was inside the First Men mind when he was turned into the NK to rule and "control" the white army (wich we all know failed). See the main point of the theory is that Children of The Forest created the Whites, but needed a mind that had some reasoning to control them, but well what do you know he turned onto them with the whole army and the winter came, from that day Bran's mind has been conected to that of the dude we see in the show as the NK
