Welcome back for another Game of Thrones Season 8 video. In this video, I will be talking about why the Night King was too afraid to fight Jon Snow during the Long Night battle at Winterfell. As you all know, Jon Snow seemed destined to fight the Night King before the Game of Thrones series ended. They had started setting this up at Hardhome, when Jon Snow defeated his first White Walker, and he saw the Night King for the first time. After this, Jon Snow and the Night King faced off again and again, however, they never ended up fighting during the final battle. Why is that? What stopped the Night King from taking down his biggest foe?

I don't think the Night King was afraid of Jon Snow or his sword. I do think he recognized Jon as a fierce opponent, but adding him to the ranks of the Night Walkers would have been in the Night King's favor, just as adding a dragon solved getting past the wall. Taking Bran was in his favor so he wouldn't be spied on and could have been on the Night King's side as well. I think the Night King showed restraint in killing Jon via the dragon, fire or anything that would have physically destroyed Jon's body as it wasn't in his own best interest in being able to use him in his ranks as one of his leaders, who were more intact than a lot of his foot soldiers. Some theorized that just as Bran was transformed to be the next in line as the 3 eyed raven, the Night King recognized Jon as being next in line to become the Night King's successor.

Hardhome was/is, easily, one of the greatest live-action zombie sequences of all time. The suspense and the pacing of this episode alone set the rest of the series up to knock it out of the park. I couldn't believe where the trajectory of the story ended up going compared to where this episode left off. I thought the battle at Winterfell was a swerve because there was no way that the battle with the Night King wasn't the logical conclusion of a horror-story-archetype that started with the Whites right? Riiiiiiight? smh

I think a fight between Jon and Ice boy would have been epic. I think it could be a protracted fight in which the white walkers gather around in a wide circle. Bran watches from the edge while an aggressive fight takes place. You sense one is winning, and the tables turn. Back and forth until Jon is on his back, his sword out of reach. The ice king approaches and prepares to finish him. He and Jon look over at Bran and Bran looks back at them, but them looks aside at something. Then Arya flies in and is caught by the Ice king. He has three Starks about to die, when she drops her knife, and kills him. To me the Icekings death should have been a longer fight, but it shouldn’t have done down to who could swing a sword best. It was for the greater warrior to win. The one with the warriors spirit, skills, and cunning. GoT had lots of great fighters, but Arya had the cunning and intelligence to get it done. My only disappointment with the ending was I wanted Cersei to be killed by Arya or Tyrion, the Hound to get his revenge, and I wanted Browne of Tarth to be pregnant when she stood up from writing in the book of Knights. Otherwise, I would rather it continue.

ummm... well Arya was the biggest badass in the show, IMO, and it wasn't just a stab, it was a sneak attack from an assassin with a dagger of dragonglass...who was saving her crippled brother from being killed... as soon as she started her 'dancing lessons' with Syrio Forel, I knew she was going to be a character to watch... this is the first time that I did NOT read the books beforehand, and didn't even have GOT on my radar until the near end of the 3rd season (in real time). I think I saw maybe 30 minutes of one of the episodes and was hooked. Binged all of them from the start the next day. It still gives me the same feeling when I rewatch it, although I only have until season 4 on bluray, which is when it started getting really good. I have always liked the time period, with the lords and ladies and such. *edit* just read the comments, and realised that Arya's dagger was Valerian steel, and not dragonglass. I haven't watched the latter seasons as much as I have watched the first 4, since I own them. I have craptastic interwebs, else I would try to watch on some other site. it is what it is, that is why I own copies. Never got around to buying the entire set, as it came out shortly after I got the ones I have..

The WW that Jon killed at Hardhome looked so surprised when Longclaw didn't break. That tells us that the NK & Co. didn't know how to recognize Valyrian steel, and perhaps feared that it might have other magical powers. Everyone else in the show immediately said, "That's Valyrian steel" the second they laid eyes on a sword or dagger made of it. (That might've just been for exposition in the show, but VS is also visually recognizable in the books.)

I think this sums it up. The Night King had direct control over his army and he sent the white walker in to fight Jon Snow at Hardhome to test him. Once he realized Jon possessed Valyrian steel he probably figured the risk was too great. And with his seemingly unbeatable army, he could ignore Jon and focus on killing Bran. But he didn’t anticipate being ambushed by another Stark. Wolves travel in packs!

I think the point of the last season was the prove that "during winter, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives". Each of the Starks had a role to play in the long night. Jon's part was to bring Danny's dragons north, Sansa was to help win back their attack base of Winterfell, Arya's part was to be the unseemly Knight who kills the night king, and Bran was the bait. Its all about the pack of wolves. Diversions here and there, blinding the Night King and distracting him. If you think about it, it's a beautiful and suspenseful game of chess between the Night King and the Lord of Light. I, for one, was thrilled to have Arya kill the Night King.

Part of me thinks that Bran is the lord of light, hear me out here: Bran is the Night King's target, light is the opposing force of darkness. The lord of light's messages (while mininterpreted) have been based around building a strong force against the night king (and the lannisters/boltons via Stannis), Bran is capable of manipulating the past to effect future outcomes. Jon is kinda Brans chosen Hero, Jon is also seen as Azor Ahai (champion of the lord of light). Blood Magic is a core component involved with both Bran/old gods and the lord of light. We know that Bran becomes king, we can also reasonably conclude that he has to some extent been playing the game of thrones to do so, the last target in his way was Dany, killed by Jon (Brans Chosen hero) which is ultimatly the action that leads him to become king. Cerci eats her own words "play the game of thrones, you win or you die" She (Lannisters) failed to kill Bran and ultimatly loses to Bran, the kid who played the game so well nobody even knew he was playing. IMO its a theory that matches the theme of ASOIAF, brings alot of threads together whilst tieing up loose ends and brings the story full circle.

@@The1Bendotcom The Night King didn't see Aria fight. Aria, representing the God of Death, as 'all things must die.' John may be Bran's chosen fighter to lead the armies well, but it was never hinted that Bran ever had his focus on what Aria was learning, and I found it interesting as Bran infers to Sansa that he knew what Sansa had endured, and this is where David and Dan rather pulled a fast one. If Bran was watching Past, Present and Future, playing the Game of Thrones, Bran would have been well aware of Aria's talents and her being groomed by Jaquin, Serio and the God of Death/Lord of Light. Bit of foreshadowing when you think back to watching Ned Stark's face when Aria first started sword training in Kings Landing... Ned had trained Jon, he never watched him train and displayed that 'Whoa!' Look on his face... if you think back, what was Jaquin Hagar doing in Kings Landing? He would have been aware of Ned making inquiries and easily could have placed the Bravosi Dancing Master into Ned's path for Aria. It would also tie in why Jaquin stayed close during Aria's trek from Kings Landing, teaching her to place her kills better while at Harrenhal, and even allowing her to leave the House of Black and White with that little smile he gave. If Jaquin had only wanted her for the House of Black and White, he would have deterred her earlier and known she was lying when she said she was truly No One! I think Jaquin may have also been a better student of the Lord of Light (Like Serio Florel) and been honing her for the true fight... her eventual ability to surprise and kill the Night King. The Stark blood ran as strongly in Aria as Jon, (Aria was likened to her aunt Lissana, also Jon's mother) and as the Night King was directly related to the Starks (both descended from the First Men), it is then less of a surprise when Aria kills the Night King. Jon was a better Strategist, Aria the Knife in the Night, taking out the primary target to end legions of future deaths by the Night King. Bran used both, and Melissandre did her part when she reminded Aria she was to close Blue eyes forever as well. I mean, didn't you ever wonder why Bran never alluded to checking on the sister he was closest in age, and as to why she was better at Bows and Arrows than he was at almost the same age even though she was never properly trained like Ned's own sons? Knight King, I mean, really, he was a Knight for Death, as proper title of KNIGHT could have been lost over eons to become 'NIGHT' King and who better to kill him than the girl trained to tell Death "Not Today!"

I would've taken it a couple of steps further: 1) Make The Long Night a two- or even three-parter (some fans have been advocating for TLN spanning an entire season, with retreats, tactical meetings etc.). 2) Early on, we get a 1v1 where NK is clearly toying with Jon; when he's about to slay him, Daenerys steps in. 3) Ultimately we're treated to a 3 or even 4v1 of Jon/Arya/Jamie/Theon vs. NK (they could potentially throw in Bran battling him on the astral plane for good measure) - Theon & Jamie perish, and Arya lands the killing blow. 4) That's just a personal preference of mine: have the "Kill one, kill all" rule only apply to the NK's lieutenants so he can rear his immortal head towards the very end of the show again, and possibly even triumph to truly "subvert those expectations".

I would’ve just ended the series five minutes before the end of that episode. Right at the time where Theon charges the Night King. Let everyone come up with there own theories about how it ends. Leave everyone waiting for Winds of Winter and a Dream of Spring or that (canceled) Long Night spin-off to get a better idea of what the actual deal was with the Night King. Instead we got Arya saves the world and the rest of season 8, no further explanation on the Night King and the WhiteWalkers and no word of any real progress on Winds in years and the fan community has all but fizzled out except for those waiting for a spin-off based on a known historical period that we already have two different accounts on.

They couldve even incorporated something like them having to discrat his warg animals so some of the other characters can fight him in combat that way it gives them a small chance as the more they distract the warged animal the less focus he'd have on the main characters but it would still be a fair fight as the night king is the night king and he gets to warg into 1 or more animals making it more even instead of a straight 5v1

Brilliant man! I would have ended the show similarly, but with betrayal after betrayal, and an end with the Game of Thrones ongoing, because the political battles never end, and revenge always produces an endless cycle of retribution. -Daenarys maimed by Arya/Sansa team up, with retreat to the North -Jon sits on the Throne, visually scarred, and somewhat jaded dispirited remaining loyal and noble… and war with the North is looking likely, with multiple players within the realm gunning for that spot as well -The Night King is beaten, and weakened, but not dead - Bran remains in the North, but omenously sees something that shows it’s only going to get worse from here Bran should be above seeking material gain/the throne I personally would have liked to see something like Powers shifting, complete character 180s, and some Darth Sansa/Darth Arya vs Dark Jon/Self Righteous Daeny vs 1-2 Well written groups and a Night King rising again… the cycle of hero, war, triumph, and betrayal never ending

The producer were so thoughtful of the show, if they had fought, there was no way Jon snow won't win and don't forget he owns a Valerian steel sword and that only mean one thing for the Night King, he can't stand Jon Snow sword, hence the reason why they avoided their fight. Believe me the producers were smart, and Arya being the unsung hero killing the the Night King brings in her value which she accumulated over her years of sojourn and training, so I wasn't pained cos Arya also deserve to be the killer. But nonetheless JON SNOW and NIGHT KING fight would have been epic regardless.

I think you are right about the epic fight scene that could have been, especially if we look back to the earlier seasons. And NK would have only fought Jon Snow if he was cornered and didn't have an out. Unfortunately, Dan & Dave were just in too much of a hurry to finish the series, and dropped all the arcs of the characters.

You perfectly explained how I felt about GOT's. Endless possibilities it seemed. I'd stay up scouring the Internet for theories, absees, and reading excerpts from the books. I remember thinking Dany's vision meant she'd never sit on the Iron Throne, and Jon Snow would somehow. I thought it was snow, my bf thought it was asges, and someone burned the city. But that was way too crazy for us to think, especially because I didn't read the books. I remember my bf and I talking all night after Jon was killed and that I thought the blood looked like dragon wings. We thought we were too obsessed and going crazy. Well, those things DID end up happening, and millions of other fans were right too. So, yes I think the Hardhome scene meant something much larger and deeper. I think it was set up for something else, and D&D became lackluster with it (or abandoned it, cut it, rushed or gave up). I really miss those days of thus show ❤️

The majority of the final season ruined my whole perception of the Series as a whole. I'm a GOT fanatic from the start of season 1, but how they ended the last season and the satisfaction they robbed us of made me drop GOT from my all time favorite series. It just sucks to this day that after damn near 9 years of waiting to see what happens in the end, they gave us what they did. It's still disappointing to this day.

What upset me the most in the long night battle is that no fighting with White Walkers actually took place. It were the Redeads that did all the fighting. What did they need all the dragonglass plotline, if all they needed for the final fight was the one dagger they had since the very first season? No White Walkers were harmed during the making of this season.

Ramsay foreshadowed it, when Jon challenged him to one on one combat in the battle of the bastards. He refused because he'd heard stories and it wasn't worth the risk. To me it was very reasonable for the Night King to avoid direct combat with Jon Snow since he recognized the fact that Snow could in fact kill him and thereby destroy all of his armies at once. We were witness to the fact that he was solely responsible and capable to raise them from the dead. As any thoughtful leader would do he used the armies at his disposal to do his bidding in lieu of personal combat. Why have a horde if you don't use it? Also, I am surprised that more people didn't recognize Bran The Three-Eyed Raven as being a top contender for the throne. I did, and it certainly seemed like the Night King did as well since he felt it necessary to deal with Bran personally. A very telling decision.

When Viserion had Jon pinned down during the Winterfell fight for a moment I though Jon’s Targaryen blood may allow him to “retake” Viserion. Something I think TNK would certainly have felt, and known Jon was then coming for him. Hardhome showed that WWs had both strength & speed and I have to assume TNK would be both stronger and faster then WWs. But I also think it’s viable that TNK had little skill (strength, speed, unstoppable weapon who needs skill? ). So I can believe he would avoid a battle with Jon. But his attempts to avoid don’t mean that battle shouldn’t have happened. Arya could have played a part assassinating the WW guards as Jon also fought through them to reach TNK.

First off, thank you for the video. What you have said, I have been saying it since season The Battle for Winterfell. One aspect, I've have been saying is that, in all episodes, in all flashbacks. On the show, no action indicated he was a fighter. All we saw him do was throw a lance of ice at a dragon, that might be the extend of his pyhsical ability. I only got to the third book, before stalling, so correct me if I'm wrong. In the book, the Night King is not made of ice, that was purely for the show. Knowing D&D self-admitted they used parts of books not in chronological order. The point you made that the Night king actually feared a fight with Jon, is why I had already drawn to conclusion, he favored his other abilities. That's why Bran was the target of the Night King and the only one trained in stealth, Arya, to be the one to kill the Night king made the most sense to me. Why didn't the lieutenant who felt a breeze, react? I know, just more questions with less reasonable answers, right? Like you I could go on and on for days about this show. The first two books I read, I've said to myself and to others, each book could easily be 3 seasons, 15 episodes each, hour to hour and half long, end each season with a 2 hr episode. I'll stop now. Anyone can ask me anything.

I think a simple change to The Night King’s story would be for them to give him a goal. I always thought if a little more attention was given to the original Three Eyed Raven and why The Night King killed him would have helped the narrative completely. They could’ve written it as he had transferred his powers completely to Bran at that point, so even if he died, the power the Night King sought was still alive. Also, the Weirwood Tree in Winterfell should’ve been where the Night King was created, and that all he needed to do to have some sort of unlimited power (an immunity to dragonglass: what turned him into what he was) was finally take out Bran and destroying the Weirwood Tree that he had been created upon. A simple explanation of that somewhere in between the introduction of Original Three Eyed Raven and the end of Season 7 (as Viserion would’ve been perfect as a mechanism to destroy the Weirwood Tree). With all of that in mind, I do believe Jon could’ve had a somewhat tough duel with the Night King since Viserion would also be there. Arya would still help in the end of it all by helping Jon finally destroy the Night King (preferably her throwing him the dagger in the last moment as White Walkers begin to overrun her and Bran since Viserion is still working on destroying the Tree).

I'm a writer and as such, I have put thought into what didn't work and what did work, particularly in the last season. The issue with it was that it was rushed. They should have spread it out to at least 9 seasons, or possibly just given more episodes in Season 8. I see how they could have done it so that fans wouldn't have been freaking out. I could even see how they could have gotten to Arya killing the night king without everyone groaning, and it is as you said. Jon and the Night King could have fought and the night king could have backed off at the end of it and ended up where Bran was, setting it up for Arya to kill him. That would have satisfied me... after all, it was Jon who gave Arya Needle and set her on her course to learn to fight with a sword, so in that way, it would have been actually good, but they rushed to get there. They got impatient. I don't have issue with how it ended, so much as the unsatisfying way it got there. I don't always expect to get what I want in a story, but I had better at least be satisfied that there is good reason it got there. Like... damn... I hate that Boromir gets killed in LOTR, but I can see the logical progression of his storyline and it makes sense. I just love that character and didn't want him to die. Same thing goes here. Get me where you want to take me in a way that, even if I wanted something else, I can at least go, oh yeah, I see why you did that and it makes sense. If you pay attention, it is not that surprising to me that Jon goes back to beyond the wall. He was happiest there. It would be cool to write a series about his adventures there and also Arya's adventures across the seas. Anyway... they just set up all kinds of interesting narratives and followed through on few of them, and that was the issue. If they had laid better groundwork and not rushed so stupidly toward the ending, it would have been fine.

I guess I'm fine with this explanation but I also felt it would've been even more epic and terrifying if the Night King actually did the opposite and not only fought, but almost easily defeated Jon Snow showing that he had no fear for him or his sword. The Night King's ancient history, fighting prowess, and power scaling would've truly showed in that fight and our built up hero Jon would've looked like a rag doll to him in the fight. This would've been the final ultimate "You're nothing to me even with your special sword" move THEN....THEN he raises the dead and sidelines him.

It is interesting point of view, but I honestly think that Night King was looking at Jon in Hardhome like he finally meet someone of whom heard a lot (or like some old poem foresighted this meeting). I felt like it was a scene in which NK could say: “only me and you matter, one of us will rule the world”. That’s why I believe NK was (let’s say) retreating from fight, because Jon was at his level. And right behind the corner was waiting for him Bran, the Three Eyed Raven. So at Winterfell NK looked at Jon like: “we will fight, in a minute when I consume power of your brother. In mean time play with those” and rises his hands.

There should have been a couple more seasons to fill in the ridiculous plot holes created by a slapdash final season, for example having time to expand on what you posit here. Your theory makes sense, although the one highlight for me was the surprise of Arya killing the Night King. I actually loved that twist.

I can def see your theory about this. I agree tho that Jon should of been the one to duel and defeat with the NK, regardless of Jon’s sword. I felt that there may of been some sort of bloodline connection between them being that the NK was originally one of the first men that had Stark blood(show theory of course) but for sure I thought the NK viewed Jon as something special or a clear threat to him…hence the way he “challenged” him by raising the dead at Hardhomme and Winterfell…like “yeah, bring it Jon Snow”…lol! So yeah, perhaps you’re splitting hairs some or just justifying why D&D mishandled that. But the WofW (whenever that comes out) should hopefully clear things up. Overall, great vids and content! Thanks for sharing and look forward to more! Cheers!🍻

In the books, the Night King was not only identified as being a Stark, he was also the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

I always thought that it was obvious why the night king didn’t want to fight jon snow. It was definitely when he saw jon kill a white walker elite with his sword.

yeah...im agree.. with you... previous scenes where John and Night King confronted... Night King must have known and felt something special about him..

I honestly believe that Night King can revive himself. That would explain why he was killed so easily and why he has survived so long.

I believe aria was the only person who could have killed him and the reason is simple...because of her training as as an assassin she was able to get close enough to him without him knowing until the last second. No one heard her comming.

My take: Night King was a complicated character. He wasn't actually evil (in the Cersei sense) but he fought the living for the evils they brought onto the world. Fighting against the first men and their encroachment was the reason behind his creation. Amongst all, John Snow was an exception for his righteousness and bravery. This might have made him avoid confronting John Snow directly.

I was SUPER disappointed to not see Jon fight the Night King!! Hardhome was such an ominous episode and I really felt like Jon deserved to fight the Night King after assembling Dany's forces to fight in the north and basically save all of Westeros from the Army of the Dead! I will forever feel cheated about that 😡😠🤬!!!

Good point. It makes sense that he wouldn't wanna fight him one on one, and why should he even allow it? He's not bound by a pharce of some cowboy behavior where he has to duel Jon. He has the literal dead fighting for him. From a writer perspective it's still mean-spirited towards Kit/Jon to not give him any meaningful thing to do during that battle, but that specific moment were NK doesn't fight Jon is not the problem here, and your explaination made that clear very well.

In my opinion I think the night king didn't view jon as this great swordsman.... but he saw him as a chess piece instead.... when Jon was on the boat and witnessed the night king bring back the dead by the 100s the night king seen the fear in his eye..... 2. The night king had jon and his group surrounded when they were looking for white walkers to bring back to show the ppl living what they're up against.... instead of killing jon and his group he waited for daenerys to bring her dragons..... so he could kill one and use it to break the wall down.... the night king and the 3 eyed raven have been playing this chess game for years.....jon was never seen in that capacity by the night king .... but he knew his value if he let him live he'd be able to get a dragon

I totally agree that we needed to see the fight between Jon Snow and the Night King. But wasn't Arya foreshadowed to be the one to kill him when she first met Melissandre and was told she'd "shut many eyes forever - brown eyes, green eyes, and blue eyes"? They actually weren't said in that order the first time Melissandre said it, but I thought D & D said in an interview that they knew Arya would be the one to kill the NK for quite some time. I was under the impression that the prophecy was thrown in for that reason. If I'm wrong though, please let me know.

I think they said they decided during season six or seven that it would be Arya, so they didn't include that scene for this reason. They just included the callback to this scene to make it look like it didn't come out of nowhere. That's also the reason the eyecolours were in the wrong order. The one argument I can find against a fight beetween Jon and the Night King is that the Night King is physically too strong. In season seven he threw a spear several miles itting a dragon hard enough to kill him. Valeryan steel or not, if Jon paried an attack of the Night King the blow should have broken his arm. From that perspective the Night King dying from a surprise attack without fight made sense. On the other hand there were so many inconsistencies that one more would not have mattered.

Merrin Trant, Walder Frey, Littlefinger? No one can kill the Night's King, because he is already dead But no one works for the only god there is: Death. And Death can't stand that what is dead may never die.

Perhaps it involved the fact Jon died and was brought back , much like how the ice king is ice ,Jon was returned by the lord of light who is represented by fire.

He knew as long as Bran was safe he had a place to warg. The touch that underscored the series. Many thought that by marking bran it would play out in a dramatic fashion and in a way it did. Bran became king, denarys did not share a scene with bran after the fall of kings landing and jon was exiled to the far north. The folly of sansa and Arya blindly trusting this emotionless she'll as blood was a plot hole because they knew him better than most and they should have questioned his motives instead of a post at old town. As a maester I would have placed bran as the hub of all knowledge of the realm. Cold and calculated.

I remember when a lot of us were speculating Hardhome so much...that right when they noticed the Ice Storm on the cliff....you can see a cloud in the shape of a Dragon, which made myself and many others think that they had a Ice Dragon. That would've been epic too, also the theory of a Dragon sleeping under Winterfell.

After seeing HOTD I started wondering if the reason that dagger worked so well had something to do with the prophecy and the magic that was put in it with the wording and the Valerian writing and enchantments that could’ve been put on it at Aegon’s request

Maybe, just maybe we will get a fight scene whenever the final books get written...🤞 But there still would not have been a better visual of it in the series, than to see it played out on the screen, like we hoped... Here is to the books...🤞🤞🤞
