Many Big Tractor Power viewers over the years have asked about the new CLAAS AXION tractor on tracks and its abilities in the field. Big Tractor Power visited with CLAAS at the 2023 National Farm Machinery show to review this 440 hp tractor.

It’s the old Renault come back to life! If you don’t know in the 70’s, 80’s and even a little 90’s Renault was leading the pack in Europe. Crazy reliable tractors carrying the legendary MWM engine! Cheap, powerful, sturdy, lightweight and sharp turning. Claas bought Renault in 2008, the Axion tractor was the last Renault ‘flagship’ tractor.

Love it!!! One of my favourites tractors at the moment (the kiwi colour not really) but the black or grey versions are a dream. Thanks to bring it to the channel

Definitely a nice tractor. I am amazed at the level of design and integration of the track system. Very impressive. Claas has raised the bar for everyone else manufacturing a track driven tractor for sure. Thank you for sharing Jason!

Soooooo. As someone who has farmed and been around farmers my entire life. I also am a heavy duty diesel mechanic who works on brand new equipment every night. That tractor is so full of sensors and electronics your going to need a full time mechanic with a laptop to keep that going. All that fancy stuff is nice when it works. Things tend to brake down when your in a rush right before that storm or on a Sunday when everything is closed 😹.

Truth! Gone are the days of simplicity. When you could fix everything with a crescent wrench, wd40, and duct tape. Now you have to have an electrical engineering degree to understand the bussed communication to eveb get the damn thing to move.

Yes, I have concerns with the turning system. First, there is the standard steering of front axel which pretty much is a straight forward concept using steering valve and steering cylinders. The track system for turning requires a track clutch and brake system per each side. The issue I question would be combining these two concepts together for long term reliability. I am a retired field engineer of 28 years with a major farm equiptment mfg.

@@arzamumma1202 an Engineer? You sound like you have to much sense for that job. Some of the stuff that should be simple is designed NOT to be. Just regular maintenance things could be easier with just a bit of thought, or engineers should have to work on what they design 🤔

Thus, the tractor has a low ground pressure but remains within the European maximum width for driving on public roads in Europe without accompanying vehicles.

I'm sorry, but IMO that is a hideous tractor to look at with that track system. It is cool how the tracks raise up to prevent creating a berm on a turn though.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder 😁. I think it’s a cool tractor. I have a 1/32 model on display in my office. I got to drive the one in this video and it was flat out awesome. It is a monster in the field.

Different markets. This can fit nicely on standard roads in say, Germany. A twinwheel tractor can't. Fields can often be on the smaller side, so you need to travel between them by road.

Thanks for bringing us another great video…Very informative. I’m too much of an American traditionalist to like any of these European tractors or concepts, whether it be claas or fendt. Their colors are heinous too.

This is an impressive tractor, I am very curious of the reliability with all this new age technology. I work for an auto company and all this tech has made them extremely unreliable.

In new tractors they work well. I think the biggest concern is how long the tech will last on them. Many farms are still using tractors they bought 50 to 60 years ago along with the new ones. Will the high tech last that long probably not. Yet these machines can cover in a mater if hours the ground older tractors took a week to do.

Aesthetically, it's good, but I think the back sprockets should be a little bigger to be more balanced between back and front. Kind of looks like it's going up hill all the time. 🤠 But that's just me.

When he said the track lifts, what actually happens?

The front "wheel" lifts a couple inches up and allows better turning.

In fact, that's not entirely true. The middle support rollers are pushed down a bit to reduce the contact area when cornering tightly.

I'd imagine the reason why Claas tractors have tracks is no different than the reason why all the other manufacturers make half-track tractors. But maybe I'll be proven wrong in it's something else entirely.

They have a unique set up that prevents berming on the turns. The outside track lifts on the turn.
