Why do Italians FLOP in the Premier League?

Over the years, the Premier League’s meteoric rise as the biggest and best league in the world has directly coincided with its mass influx of foreign imports. From Frenchmen to Brazilians, to Spaniards and Belgians, the Premier League just isn’t what it is without the international talent that graces its grandest stage.
However, there’s always been one nation that has never fully found a home here. There are of course exceptions, but the rule stands firm: Italians just don’t do English football. But with Newcastle’s recent splurge on Milan’s Sandro Tonali, the question just has to be asked. Why do Italians flop in the Prem?

Because Serie A was much better during the mid to late 80's and 90's, Britain's best moved to Italy and flopped there too. Let's not forget Ian Rush and Gazza moving to Juventus and Lazio respectively. Also crazy money was being thrown around in Italy during the 90's and the early 2000's, Inter bought Vieri for €47m in 99, Nedved and Rui Costa set Juventus and Milan back €45m each in 2001, Mendieta cost Lazio €48m during that same season, Milan then proceeded to buy Inzaghi for €37m, Juventus picked up Thuram for €37m, Roma picked up Batistuta for €37m, Crespo went to Lazio for €57m, Buffon to Juventus for €52m. That's crazy money when considering these transfers took place between 99 and 2002. Italy was also really good during that period having won the World Cup in 82 and 2006, finishing runners up to Brazil on penalties in 94 and achieving a third place in 1990 and would've arguably gone all the way in 2002 if not for a corrupt ref. Also out of the 22 combined finals(Champions League/UEFA Cup/Europa League) finals that took place between 89-2001 Italian teams were represented 21 times, that's an insane stat.

Marcel Desailly said that he loved the freedom of life in London over Milan. He said he could walk around London and go for meals without hassle. But in Milan you would be hassled by either a supporter or abused by a inter fan. Chelsea has a young player who is looking like he can be another Italian legend in Cesare Casadei hopefully he will reach the levels of Zola Vialli and Bobby Dimateo for the club

As you said it wasn't a respectable move for Italians to leave for England in the beginning, but as time moved on, I think it stared to become more of a cultural thing. Italians are notorious for ripping on English culture, and I think due to those resentments, it kind of manifests in some Italian PL players as bad form. Cuz logically, why would a boy from Milan or Torino or Genoa want to live in Manchester or Liverpool or of all things, Birmingham. At the end of the day, I think it has less to do with quality and more to do with culture clashings

England has by far the strongest and most competitive league out of the big leagues in Europe. It's not even a debate, it's fact. That doesn't translate into necessarily having the best teams in Europe. Nobody is debating that Man City are bigger than Real Madrid. They're not, and likely never will be. Better in individual seasons, sure, but not a bigger club.
@stealthiscool

Your point could be made for Spaniards, French, Portuguese, Brazillians etc but they all have countless successes in the league. The issue with Italians in the PL not having consistent success is simply down to how they have traditionally approached the game of football and how it is almost the exact polar opposite of how the English approach the game although things have changed for both on that front over the past decade.

@@Rodney231 Never, but England had 3 CL semi-finalists in 2007, 2008 (Liverpool knocked out Arsenal in the QFs to get there), and 2009 (Chelsea knocked out Liverpool in the QFs to get there) and had finalists in 2005-2009 along with 2011 and 2012. La Liga's real dominance didn't come until the 2010s although they were still successful during this period

@@Rodney231la liga teams at that time solely could focus on European games and few league games unlike the premier league where the newly promoted side could break your title dream and comparing knockout European competition to the league is unfair. You could say la liga teams were dominating Europe but when it comes to the league the premier league is best but you could say in the early 2010s it was not at best for a few years but then again it became so good after that.

English clubs were banned from competing in the Champions league within the late 80's and Early 90's. Its around the same time that the Seria A rose to prominence. The absence of English teams from Europe's top competition truly affected english football, as the rest of Europe evolved in tactics. By the time the ban was lifted, English clubs came into a different terrian. Hence, they were playing catch up to the italian league.

Balotello did well at Man City but flopped at Liverpool. I will say Roberto Di Matteo, Gianfranco Zola, Paolo Di Canio, Carlos Cudicini and Gianluca Vialli succeeded in the Premier League and even Jorginho for Chelsea as well. A player called Benito Carbone who played for Sheffield Wednesday did pretty well. I think Sandro Tonali might do well but it will take time for him to adapt though

Yeah it’s shocking to think how few Italians are in the prem. On the bright side casadei looks really promising for Chelsea. Obviously too early to tell, but I think that if more prem clubs had more Italian youngsters come thru the academy, it could fix this
@micheleduritto
@micheleduritto 10 ай бұрын
See...that is exactly the problem....Casadei, like many other players he mentioned in the video, that flopped or that were "exposed" , are not really considered to be the best in Italy....not even close. Can Casadei succed? i hope so for him and for the italian national team, but once again, even to this day, the best italian players don't move outside of Italy...even tho, since Serie A is no longer the top league, i personally think they should...the problem is that Serie A fans, if the players from their favourite team move to the Prem, are going to say that they are sell-outs moving only for the money...and so, the only players that really move to the Prem are players that fans of those clubs they come from, don't really care about that much. Like....Milan fans are still insanely angry and resentful towards Gianluigi Donnarumma, and even after this much time since his move to PSG they still boo him during italian national team matches...even the important ones, and they still harrass him constantly on all social media that talks about him. (i think they are completely crazy for doing all of those things...but hey, sadly that is the reality). Tonali really is the only exception, and it was an exception made possbile only because of a specific set of circumstances that all lined up for the move, the new ownership of the club, Zlatan retiring (i know it sounds silly..but look at how Tonali cried during the retirement event), Maldini getting fired from the board, the club needing to sell players, but not willing to sell their star players, like Maignan,Theo Hernández and Leao, and many other reasons, and because of those reasons, Milan fans are actually not really mad at Tonali strangely enought.

The short answers, are: 1: The best Italian players have always played in Serie A (at least during their prime years) 2: The style of play in Serie A is very different from the PL (always has been). The PL is played at a much higher tempo and intensity, its more physical and more end to end. Whereas in Serie A, it's calmer, you get more time on the ball due to not being closed down so quickly, its more technical and tactical plus you don't need to be quick to perform well.

I'd argue against some of these. Giaccherrini played as expected, he was never a top player. Just a decent pro who played to his level at Sunderland. Same with Diamanti, his output at West Ham was fine. Remember that he had only played one season at the top level when he joined West Ham. They pretty much signed him off his showing in Serie B. He did well all things considered, but he has had a very nomadic career. Santon's injury killed him, he's retired at 32 now. He had struggled in his final season at Inter and was loaned out for half a season. Unfortunately he was one who showed early promise but did not bloom. And to be a bit obtuse, Osvaldo is actually Argentinean, he just took Italian citizenship. He didn't arrive in Italy until he was 20. But yeah he's a complete lunatic and had issues with his temper at multiple clubs lol.

But on the other hand I love Eddie Howe and the style of football he has implemented at Newcastle, I think Tonali could slot into that team very well. I just fear that the pressure of his price tag and also the pressure from english media and the fans too may weigh him down. I just hope that he plays well and most importantly enjoys his football.

to reduce controversy and debate with your opinion, you should change the title to "why MOST italian players flop in the premiere league" coz not all italian players flop in premiere league. maybe you forgot about Zola, Dicanio and others

Please do a video to Galatasaray in 2012/2013 2013/2014 they were so closed to reach the Champions League semi finals against Real Madrid, signed Sneijder und drogba who are today club legends, Burak Yilmaz who scored 8 goals in a single CL Season. such a wild time man

Good video. Well researched. Thank you. Great start for Tonali. He's very much up to speed, particularly with the one touch type of football, such as the build-up to Wilson's goal, as well as cross-filed passes. Also very high successful pass-rate. He's got a very complete game. As one of the commentators on the game said , Tonali looked as if he'd been playing for the team for a few years. And a goal after 6 minutes on his debut? He's going to do very well here.

The best genius’ of football can be found in Italian footballers, unfortunately their need for nationalism doesn’t allow them to appreciate other amazing players, where there is so much quality

Very good video but it’s quite interesting that Italian managers haven’t really struggled too much, Conte ancelotti sarri di matteo all achieving big success at Chelsea. Could it be that the Chelsea Italian ‘revolution’ in the late 90s made Chelsea appeal to Italians more and generally feel more at home if you like… then again Jorginho who was one of the few Italians not to flop isn’t even native to Italy…

Ancelotti, Mancini, Ranieri and Conte won the premier league, Sarri the europa league, this must means something. To me it's true that the physical intensity in Serie A is lower, but tactically it's the most difficult league to play in, so the players might suffer the league change, for the managers it's easier.

Yes, Chelsea in 96 with 3 Italians was the first team to majorly bring foreigners into the league and was the team the revolutionise the premiership with thier foreign flair. Definately not Arsenal with Bergkamp, Anelka, Viera in 96. Definately not Arsenal who added Grimandi, Overmars, Petit to those three to win the league the following season. Sorry, but claiming Chelsea's Italians changed the game for foreign players is a joke. I get they were important for Italians (and was important for Chelsea), but ultimately it was Arsenal that really blew the doors open on foreign talent. They were hated for YEARS because of it, regarded as ripping the heart out of english football with this team of foreign mercenaries.

Even Dennis bergkamp and Thierry Henry tried their luck in Serie A but they did not find that much success as expected if they would have been successful(or happy) there, they would haven't come to the premier league.I once watched a match when Thierry Henry used to play for Juve and the defence was so tight that he couldn't do what we have seen him doing in the premier league and he was so desperate all the time on the pitch.

I think you have to take a macro approach with this and look at the numerous talents of all national origins who have failed in the EPL. Teams are taking chances with a signing more often in hopes of hitting a homerun. This leads to some guya maybe not being a great fit or not a fit for the specific system or manager. Pogba comes to mind there where he is best in an advanced role free flowing up the pitch. United werent able to sufficiently surround him with guys who could play behind that and control the midfield in the same way a guy like Kante did for France. Now the manager has a big money guy but he is hesitant to play him because he needs to produce results to keep manging the side. Players get benched or played less often for a guy like Milner who you know will have less ebs and flows to hie game because of the style of player he is. Players do not have the luxury of adjusting to a new league or squad as they once did. There is enough parody that a manager will error with caution by playing a lesser player to avoid sacrificing wins for player development or time to adjust. If not the club will simply replace the manager and keep moving.
