And being shamed for being "fat" even when they're just at a healthy weight (or less, even) and told "the camera adds 10 pounds" and stuff. Sometimes when you see behind-the-scenes type stuff you can see how boney the girls are irl and even the boys are real slim. So, whatever they're paying for as "food" for the idols and trainees, idk, maybe that's an accounting secret code-word for "executive bonuses". : /
@GotInterest
@GotInterest 3 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing what’s budgeted as “food” may mean a few different things than just straight up food and may come with more costs. For example, I imagine that companies hire personal chefs or caterers to prepare meals because the individual members don’t have time to which would absolutely increase the cost. And if you are paying someone to prepare a meal 3x a day... that cost adds up. Also, while they may not be eating much, the actual food they are eating may be expensive. A lot of “healthy” dieting food is pretty expensive. While they are on tour, they probably eat out or get delivery which is expensive. Also you have to keep in mind that the idols are probably eating more than you think (while still not eating enough). All that singing and dancing and training consumes a lot of energy, so they would have to eat more calories than a regular person would. But if they were still served regular or smaller sized meals, it would certainly seem to the idols like they were barely eating, because they would still be hungry after their meals. And even if they are barely eating, they still probably eat at least 2 meals a day, with multiple members every single day... that does add up.

I wish you talked about the JYJ-TVXQ split. That was one of the most shocking and biggest slave contract trials in all of K-POP I think.
@Chishannicon
@Chishannicon 4 жыл бұрын
@Alicia Buhororonyandwi In 2009, three of TVXQ's five members filed an injunction against SM in order to terminate their contracts, saying that the contracts were excessively long and that their schedules were so packed that they were inhumane. At the time, TVXQ was the biggest name in K-pop, and this lawsuit revealed to the world the horrors of the K-pop industry. Not only were they not being paid enough for their work, but the contracts were signed for a period of 13 years, which would have meant that SM owned them from the time they were 17 to the time they were 30 (basically their entire prime of life). When this went to court, the courts decided that the contracts were indeed slave contracts, and ruled in favor of the three members (JYJ). Contracts for K-pop groups are now required to be much shorter in term length (no longer than seven years) and much more fair to the artists, all because those three said "enough is enough" and stood up for themselves. While people may still say that the contracts today are "slave contracts" they are still better than the average contract prior to 2009.

They find the artist, not the artists go to some camp to be pick as a doll. Producers and mangers are looking for artists who know and create music. There are tons of recording companies in America unlike korea. Mainstream or independent. What about American music that you think is all about depression? Music about self expression about the person's experiences and thought. American music has always variety of unique feelings and sounds since the creation of blues, traditional pop, and jazz. Things have improved a lot lately . When TVXQ members sued SM not only unfair pay was revealed but a lot of other abuse like contacts for such a long time that the idol was tied to the company basicly forever . Even if the company did not give them work they were not able to feed themselves by taking other jobs on their own like maybe a tv show. There is still abuse but idols also are less likely to just endure it like in the past. Now more and more artists fight against abuse in court

Koreans are really conservative. Besides explicitness, they don't like marijuana (which is legal in the US), they don't like LGBT community, they don't like other colors and culture as well. This does not respresent whole of Korea, but it has like this taboo or laws and sayings from the elderly. Also kpop idols are shaped that way to be "clean" and without 'scandals' to provide a figure for younger Koreans to follow. They don't want kpop idols to be explicit because it will also inspire younger generations to do the same, hence they want to remain the youth, cuteness, and innocence.

Thanks to this relation, when ATEEZ debut they can go international. Please take note when Block B active as a group they are very popular and have a solid fandom especially in Korea and Japan, imagine the money company got from them, even Zico can have money to create his own agency after he left KQ (he only left KQ but still in Block B just to clarify)

that's exactly like how record labels work, they find a band, sign them to x albums deal, pay for studio and all that jazz, release album and the band has to pay them back, lots of bands make no money except for the ones at the top.

My friend linked me this video and I must say: this was a dang good vid. Usually, when I see this type of title on my YT page, I get pretty sceptical, because most of these videos tend to be just fake woke kpop stans without proper research or knowledge, only dissing the current system of kpop without even properly understanding it or Korean culture. So this truly was a pleasant surprise. In fact, I think you could have gone even deeper to the subject, as in why does this current system work and so on. But I understand you wanted to keep the vid in pleasable length etc. And that could be a topic for another video too: how did the current production system of kpop come to be, why it still works and exists and so on. Personally, I have spent over 10 years of my life listening to kpop, seeing it evolve and doing a lot of research about the system, backgrounds and Korean culture itself. Therefore, I’m very pleased to meet a youtuber who clearly takes this stuff seriously and makes proper educational content about this stuff. I will surely check out more of yout content 💛

I'm late to the comment game here, but I would love to see this to be series. I've been following Kpop actively for 2-3 years now, but there are still things that I don't understand or even reference that escape me because I wasn't that active in the kpop space before 2018. Just popped in to say hi really to see new groups or check in on favs, haha. Anyway, I love your videos and I feel like you introduced me to so many groups I wouldn't have even looked at. Thanks!

YES to KPop Explained, please. If I could choose, I’d ask for a guide for kpop concepts (most common concepts, most unique, who did what concept first / which group made a particular concept popular- that kinda thing) :) Thank you for the informative and entertaining content! Keep up the good work, sir!

If you think of it it’s like buying something in the store you need to pay for what you just in this case your paying to get money it’s a little fair depending what you’re going to pay and what you’re going to get

Yeah trainee life is already hard enough knowing the fact you may never debut ever and even if you do you're not guaranteed success but more so failure unless you have some amazing luck but then again that's any entertainment industry career. It all comes down to your luck

The idea of the break even or reduced income make sense to me. It seems fair. It's stupid expensive to give tons of people housing, food, and training classes. Of course they aren't going to get that for free. As long as at the end of the day, once their debts are paid off they start to see the fruits of their labor I think it's fair. Everything that these idols do are at the companies expense. The idols deserve compensation for their talent and performances, but at the end of the day they are only able to do what they do because someone is behind the scenes funding it. I don't think it's unfair at all.
