I like metal music for the passion and the expression. The pain, the pleasure, the expressions of the evil in life, I'm here for it all. You don't get true emotions in more popular music genres. When you listen to bands like NIN or Metallica or Death you feel the pain and the anger and misery of these people who have important things to say, and emotions to express, that otherwise wouldn't be heard. The dealing with the feelings and the ideas that are more than real and horrible. You don't have pop songs singing about the darkest things in the world. One of my favorite examples is KoЯn's debut album (One of my favorite bands by the way). At first, many see it as the often perceived "trashy nu metal" There is so much pain within those tracks and emotions of one who has truly suffered. You don't get songs like "Daddy" in popular music. It is a tough listen about a tough topic that no one wants to talk about, but it needs to be talked about. KoЯn, and many other bands such as Slipknot, NIN, Metallica, Death, Candlemass, Slayer etc. express that pain that the world wants to ignore. And then other bands, such as the aforementioned and others such as Gojira, Meshuggah, The Berzerker etc. et.c (The list goes on) sing about things that most people wouldn't even know are happening. Even bands like Infant Annihilator, even though they are meant for shock, i feel are important, bringing people the true extent of how horrible these things really are. THIS is why I love metal music, also it sounds cool....

I 100% agree with ur thoughts and analysis here, however I think the energy of it is just as important as the aggression. It gives people a break from having to keep up appearances and be normal and just let loose. That's why people love moshpits so much, when they hear a fast powerful riff it gives them an outlet for their energy, and their negative emotions

My interest in metal was part of a turning point in my life where I became more aware of and disconnected from the world after having wasted most of my pre-adult years being too careful, undecided, and a vacuum of personality. It wasn't really out of a need of rebellion but a realization that the ordinary no longer interested me. There is a profound sense of freedom being harsh, loud, and yelling things that would be ethically horrific in reality, and hearing it loosens up the dials of my brain that get turned down by mundane every day life in a system that seeks to domesticate people for compliance and profitability. Obviously metal has never been immune to this, but a large part of it refuses and resists being tamed, especially the underground.

I don't think I've ever gone this deep into why I like what I like. The thing I've thought about most recently is that I'm an active listener. Some people like "background music" like lo-fi, I find it boring because when I listen to music, I listen to the music. I want to hear all of the little details and the harmonies created by the instruments and voices. I want music to make me feel something. I guess that's the appeal of rock, punk, metal, and even Japanese idol music. When you get down into the weeds of J-Pop, there is so much influence from rock and metal, and the arrangements are so dense with layers and it's right in your face, it's a sensory overload. It takes the opposite approach to metal by being overly happy and cute, but I believe they're more similar than one may think. Plus sometimes they hit you with sick riffs and breakdowns out of nowhere too. I'm pretty picky with metal, I dislike way more than I like, but the stuff I do like I reeeeeaaaally like. It just feels good, I don't know. I think some music just takes time to understand. Some songs or styles take multiple listens before you can enjoy them.

I've always found pop boring until I discovered J-pop. I don't know why but J-pop is more stimulating for some reason than normal pop.

@@nagyerik845 I was into popular music when I was a kid, but lost interest as I grew up. I was listening to the Spice Girls, N*Sync, S Club 7, etc. It wasn't until Lorde's debut album that I heard something I really liked again. I prefer the goofy idol groups over the more popular stuff, but it's still J-Pop. I don't exactly know what it is either, but the composers and musicians are all incredible so that might help. 😅

There was a turning after the old school death and black metal bands era in the 90’s. Go more extreme or go back towards traditional heavy metal. Old school bands had light and shade. Plenty of variety but the new school is just 300 bpm blast beats and Cookie Monster vocals. Diminishing returns set in long ago

Something I saw in the Metal Evolution documentary is that metal brings the feeling of POWER. That makes a lot of sense to me. Music is one of the few things that I voluntarily search for to have the feelings of intensity and agressiveness.

I think the main reason for the disdain of metal is cuz we started shifting towards pop and rap and all those genres beginning in the 2000s. By the turn of the century the Nu-Metal wave sorta came to an end and it was no longer deemed cool, and many of the classic bands were either far past their peak or were beginning to slowly fall into irrelevancy. I think Korn getting into dubstep and collabing with a bunch of other groups to change their sound is a good example of this. That said though i think lately metal has seen a small resurgence thanks to game collabs and tiktok, and I do agree with your thoughts on the genre, and me personally I enjoy metal because it speaks truth to me. Edit: Also part of the disdain is critics being dumbasses and most recent metal either falls into the bro-metal or wannabe tough guy metal or it’s just kinda meh imo.

I definitely agree with your points. That was a great take my metalbro, peace. However, I wanna add onto that. It ia indeed true that metal is more complex and technical than other music genres. Not everything is Death, Dream Theater, Tool etc but even the most basic and simple forms of metal like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden or let’s say, 80s NWOBHM is still way more complex and technical than your average pop, rap or edm song. I think the people that listen to metal like lots of things happening in the music simultaneously, hence the interest metalheads usually have towards classical music. On the contrary, normies hate that. They like their songs to be very basic and digestible, it literally hurts their brains when the song is “loaded” with music. Even the less talented metal musicians have high levels of musical prowess. And you mentioned different extremes but forgot one: Extreme virtuosity. I once heard somewhere the quote that “Metal is the music for musicians”. This might be a very bold claim. But I actually agree with it. Metal doesn’t necessarily have to be the only music genre of musicians, but it definitely is a music genre designed for people with well refined musical tastes.

@@VARVIS_ my answer is: When you want to feel different and aggressive vibe of music, metal will embrace you. But I want to say something else also. Music don’t has to be just pleasure. I think when you listen to any genre or artist, you must be loyal and disciplined. Maybe a song from an artist is not catchy for you, but when you remember that he is your lovely artist, you must think differently. I mean I would never want to be “poser”😅

i think this is part of the answer but i dont think that explains everything. i mean not all metal is "dark and evil". lots of more uplifting sounding metal in major keys and yadda yadda, as well as more neutral vibes. with the metal i make, im not trying to sound evil, im trying to sound trippy, ethereal, and psychedelic, like alien music. those things dont have to be dark or evil inherently.

Yeah, I also sometimes zone out while listening to metal and think to myself, wow, this objectively sounds like garbage. On the emotion thing: you have a point there but then why do I feel so fucking happy while litening to infant annihilator? Do we become happy by expressing negative emotion? That would be pretty cool Ps: Man I wish this tour wasn't north America exclusive, I'm over here in Europe crying

Yes that more or less was the point, expressing negative emotion can be joyous if celebrated. It sounds weird to celebrate these emotions, but to me it is better than simply pretending they dont exists!

I am a huge pessimist, maybe my music shows the optimism i crave idk and i dont want to listen to negative and intense music

I made a genuine attempt to get into newer bands like Blood Incantation, Vektor, Obscura, Beyond Creation, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Gojira, Revocation, Rivers of Nihil, Spawn of Possession, The Zenith Passage ect ect but I just wasn't getting enough varitey like I did with Pantera, Megadeth, Mastodon, Death. Those old guys came up on hard rock so it was built into their DNA. The new guys don't represent enough influences or at least enough that diverge from extreme metal. Still crank the old stuff constantly
