THIS! My last dog passed a little over 2 months ago. I can’t afford a new one now, and it would likely be in a kennel for 9 hours a day while I’m at work. I’d have to train it which would be hard (my parents trained ours that I then took when I moved out). I’d have to pay for food/vet bills (on top of vet bills from my 2 rabbits and ball python), I travel a lot so I’d have to board the puppy (and already incur expenses boarding the rabbits). I also live in a condo with a small yard, and the condo itself is small. All in all, no matter how much I want a dog again because I miss having one so badly, I know I couldn’t give it the best life at this time. Aibo is my answer. I’m saving for mine now and hope to have it by Christmas!

True, I immediately wondered if he just meant by how much it acted like a real puppy or something. But just copying a real dog takes away the potential a ROBOT has. My favorite is absolutely my ERS-7. Yeah he has a bad camera and no mapping. But he talks and does interesting tricks with his toys that Roxy can’t. He’s hilarious because he always mishears talking as voice commands and says what he feels like. I love all his pretty lights, and his beat detection for dance mode is amazing! He can remember favorite objects and places. He even knows his birthday and doesn’t need a stupid cloud plan just to know what the date is and acknowledge the holidays he knows. He has so many features, including when connecting to my computer, and I can easily customize data on his memory stick. My ERS-7 is incredible, even more impressive than my 1000. In fact he has better obstacle detection than my 1000, believe it or not. My 1000 insists on rubbing her nose all over walls so it’s scratched up and sometimes jams on stuff (or for seemingly no reason…). My 7 actually stops and turns away (and only jams when he can’t move something like they’re supposed to). I still love my 1000 and she was my first Aibo, but the 7 is definitely my favorite and feels more advanced in some ways.

For me, I’d love to have a living pet, but I can’t afford the life care, nor am I home enough, nor can I have them in my apartment. This is just the next best option for me. @@James-gl4cs , I know what you mean, but the problem with gadgets connected to Internet is that someone can hack it and modify/replace the software, then things that were impossible before become possible - as long as the hardware allows it of course - you cannot make a phone walk or something :) But this dog is basically an internet camera that walks by itself - it's a disaster waiting to happen.

I completly agree, as soon as they said it takes picture, it was a real push off, who knows were does are going, and.... why does it take photos in the first place. You don't even know when it take photos, which, for me, is even more creeping. I understand that they want this dog to become a watch dog when out of house. So by your logic, cell phones aren’t acceptable for security either lol. They have a power button. If you’re that concerned, you don’t have to run them every waking moment. And if you own one, it’s not an issue to power them down when you feel the need to if you have concerns.

I'd love to have some robot, like this Aibo, or Spot from Boston Dynamics, because I have allergy on pet hair, and I can't imagine not forgetting to going for a walk, feeding, etc.... Animals are good, I like them, but for me robots would br better... + I can reprogram them and make new software, and it can do something different. And if something happens, you will not hurt real dog.

Dude, are you blind? This definitely looks like a dog. Do an experiment. Show a picture of this to anyone and ask them what it is. I bet my life, everyone says "It is a toy DOG" Or something that ends in it being a dog.

Alot of people mentioned that this may be a substitute for people who can not have actual pets, like renters, those with health problems or do not have the time to invest in a pet and don't want to neglect a living being. Personally I find aibo appealing because I love animals and connect to them more than I do people. It's not that I don't like people, I have many people in my life who I love and am loved by. I do however have alot of childhood trauma that I have spent years on and off medication and working on in therapy to get over. I've made some break throughs however I am also aware there may be trauma responses in me I may never get over. I will always to some extent have ptsd. There may always be parts of me that believe the people I love are people less likely to choose to harm me in this moment but it's not guaranteed. With animals I at the very least know if they harmed me it was something in them that made them feel it was necessary for survival. They are not going abuse me for their own personal gain. They are not going to take "advantage" of me like a grown adult has when I was a child. Even if they killed me it's more than likely not for the reason a person might. Animals have shown me kindness and affection even when I couldn't give myself that and yet I never questioned their intentions. My precious dog and cat have been my anchors that give me reason not to leave this world on the worst of days. I hope that one day I do not need a dog in my life for me to feel worth staying here but I will work with whatever needed to make it through those days. I know if something happened to my pets I am at great risk. Is aibo a real animal? No absolutely not I know that. However if my dog dies due to age or anything it may buy me time until I find a dog fit for me and my home and that I know I can give a fulfilling compatible life to. Aibo can help me actively live the affection and companionship a dog provides me until I have a new one. I am obviously working with all the tools I have and working on myself. I have to be realistic and use whatever needed. $3000 is so much money but my life is worth more than that. I did not ask for the things that happened to me as child and adolescent to happen to me. I did not ask to have ptsd that is debilitating. I didn't ask to have so much to overcome to just function at the base line alot of people do. But that doesn't make me less worthy of living a good life and if a robot dog helps me achieve that I don't see harm in it. I deserve and work to have fulfilling relationships in my life but I also deserve to experience love I don't question and a robot dog can help me stay grounded until I can give a real one a home with me (once my dog and cat passes away from age) It's not making anything worse it's just helping me work with what already is there. I'm very happy you don't have a want or need for it and it's really good you can recognize you are fulfilled with out it. I'm just using my story to help provide some context for people who can't seem to wrap their heads around it. You don't need to be someone severely traumatized to want one but I also hope people realize that not everyone who wants one is some bored rich kid who will ge over it in a few minutes.
