Looking into a vintage Sony AIBO robot first released in the year 2000. See and hear through AIBO's senses and experience some of the processing going on inside AIBO's mind. Decide for yourself if AIBO has a soul and see how AIBO perceives the world thanks to tools from the AIBOhack website. Christine Sunu has done some great work in the emotive robotics field, I dare you to go out and find and watch to video where Christine Sunu snaps a furry robot in half and not be affected.

The Aibo was absolutely beyond it's own time. Though it has aged well in some respects and poorly in others, it will always be remembered as an unusual, but impactful, footnote in consumer robotics technology. Now time to get my old ERS 210 working... Edit: My 210 is now functional as of June 21st!

I watched that 'Man's Best Friend' documentary showing AIBO funerals on NHK a few years ago. It was fascinating and quite profound actually. It's easy to dismiss this when viewing just the funeral segment out of context on KZfaq as simply another one of those "wacky Japanese" things, but in the actual documentary they interview the monk who conducts the ceremonies and his thoughts on the matter are very poignant and existential. Of course, much of this is down to the inherent animistic nature of Japanese culture and their Shinto beliefs (even though this was a Buddhist ceremony, Buddhism and Shinto coexist in Japan), but there is definitely something more universal going on, as I've seen plenty of Western AIBO owners express similar sentiments. It reminds me of the Star Trek TNG episode "The Measure of a Man" when Data has to prove he's more than simply a machine, after Starfleet orders his disassembly for research purposes. All of this goes to illustrate that Sony's original intent of developing human-robot interaction with the AIBO project has actually succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. I still have my original ERS-110 from 1999 and amazingly he's still working perfectly. As basic as the tech is by modem standards, it's still hugely impressive and stands as a testament to Sony's pioneering spirit. It's always been more than just another piece of consumer tech to me. It's also staggering to me that the original ERS-110 project was actually created at a financial loss to the company. This being a product that sold for $2,500 in 1999! Truly mind blowing. How many other companies would have even entertained such an insane project?! Sony are awesome.

Very well put! That NHK documentary you speak of sounds interesting, so I’ll be scouring the internet for that today 😄👍 As far as machines having a soul & giving them a proper send-away goes.. I don’t believe there’s anything wacky about it. Not sure if there’s a term that’d best fit it, but ever since a young age, I’ve believed that if something is held near & dear to you.. inanimate or not, that is an extension of your very being. So in a cosmic sort of way, our little devices & machinery could very well have a form of life force to them! Just a looney example of my own… I drive the family kept since ‘03 Toyota 4Runner that I’ve cared for from new to 300k miles currently. That truck has faithfully transported me when I was the most happiest in life and also provided a little cocoon of safe-space when my very existence seemed to be crashing down around me. Nowadays, that old truck is showing her age slightly, yet still runs flawlessly for me & literally me only, it seems like! Its amusing, but also kind of strange, when someone else needs to use it for a bit and things start crazy misbehaving in it (radio refusing to turn on, numerous warning lights starting to light up, etc..) but once returned & driven by myself, everything miraculously is working again 😂😂😂 You cannot tell me that cars are in some way/shape/form, atleast temperamental!

The thing that bugs me about the funerals is as important as these were to people they're getting to the age where they're getting more and more rare, and there must be easily enough parts between all those aibos to get at least a few of them back on their feet.

This video sent me down such a rabbit hole, jeez. KZfaq recommended me this randomly. I had forgotten about the robot pet craze of the eary 2000s, when I was a barely 10 y.o. kid. I saw one of these guys in a tech center for kids, and then dreamt of having one. And now you are telling me there is a modern remake? And it's adorable?! I have to really hold on to my wallet, because it's way too expensive in my situation. And yet... Reminiscing aside. This was a great video. Really brought me back, and great to hear this little robot got its own community with mods and alterations. It was an incredibly futuristic gadget back then, and I imagine it could make people dream of robotics even today.

One possible reason is there were so few vintage AIBOs sold compared to hundreds of millions of vintage game consoles. If you live outside of Japan or the U.S. like myself then you can't even pay for subscription because Sony only accepts credit cards from those countries. From what I have heard the new AIBO is 99% functional without the cloud service. You miss out on using the app, saving photos and firmware updates. Firmware updates is a problem because they have been releasing new functions and abilities. If I find a cheap second hand one I might consider it. Is it possible that this old model has a neural network as a thinking center - I find it hard to believe, considering that the processor inside is probably a relatively weak microcontroller. It is possible that it has some machine learning algorithm, but I doubt that it has some neural network model inside.
@JanusCycle
@JanusCycle Жыл бұрын
That's a good question, thank you for your comment. My understanding is that these AIBO models have simplified sensory inputs from sound, vision and touch. That is run through a learning system, that then 'decides' which pre-determined movements and behaviours to display as it grows and changes it's unique personality. I don't know if neural network is too strong a term for this simple learning system, so I'll quote this article, 'Researchers at Sony implemented AIBO’s behavior control architecture using probabilistic state machines whose probabilities are modified using reinforcement learning through interaction with the user' nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/services/Download/uon:7779/ATTACHMENT01

@@JanusCycle ok, state mashine with reinforcement learning is definitely possible! I know about implementations on microcontrollers, they require much less processing power, I've never tried it (in software), but I know it's possible. As I understand it, the last AIBO models run everything on servers, so it's easily possible for them to have much more complicated learning systems - but the moment the server shuts down, there is no chance to learn new tricks.
