Make no mistake, as cool as the solo is, its the rhythm section underneath that makes it epic. The rhythm section is so dynamic and tight and progressive (even with three chords), it does a lot of the work itself, letting the solo get away with playing a few blues licks.

Free Bird is how I built my stamina back when I was in my 3rd year of playing. I learned it (for the most part) by ear, lick by lick, learning to play them slowly and building my speed up day by day. It's a perfect solo for building up finger strength and of course I used those licks a lot in my own improvised solos for years. When I played the song live, I always used the same general structure but I never played it the same way twice.

When a guy says he knows Free bird, you automatically assume he has advanced guitar skills. In my 20's I worked with a guy who said he was in a band and they did Free bird note for note. I figured he must be really good, because I wasn't able play that solo all the way through without falling apart. After about 6 months working with him he brought in a tape of his band. His slide work was okay, and then when it came to the solo - it ended! His band only did the "pretty part".

I will happily play Free Bird for anyone who yells "FREE BIRD!!!!!". But don't expect me to skip the actual song. I'm not just going to play the solo. It's like a PB&J without the PB&J. Don't get me wrong, I like the solo and I can't imagine the impact it's had. But everything before it is what makes this such a great song. It's a road song, and I definitely have a soft spot for road songs. But it's about love, and letting go of love. Leaving home, and yet never being able to leave home behind you. Setting yourself free of what the weight this world has on us. Packing your bags, and going where the road takes you. It's a beautiful song, and the solo just makes that much better.

Just as the iconic 5min solo took time to come to fruition, so have my neighbor's additional lyrics during said solo. He literally screams at the top of his lungs "Flyyy FLY... SO FARRR AWAYYYYY!" Entire solo, over and over. Best neighbor I've ever had 🤣

It wasn’t an improvisation. Look up Skynyrd in the Hell House. They would spend hours practicing and perfecting their songs and even composing their solos. They would play them the same way every time. That’s how Ronnie Van Zant wanted it. They composed solos. Compare the live album to the studio versions and they are almost perfect in most ways.

I think it was producer Al Kooper who said that the band never improvised during their performances. They gave every ounce of blood and sweat during their rehearsals and had every note and lick down to a tee. I’ve only ever seen one improvisational moment or “guitar battle” between all 3 guitarists and that was in the mid 90’s in Germany (you can look up the performance). And even then, Collins had been dead for a few years. It was between Gary Rossington and newcomers Rickey Medlocke and Hughie Thommasson.

The best FREE BIRD ever was a John Paul Jones concert around 1999. Someone yelled it out and it was so absurd that it was the best! JPJ even answered the guy something funny like "that's too old even for me". I wish I remembered exactly what he said but the whole thing was a great moment for everyone.
