Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel and to a frequently asked question, why do pilots sometimes taxi with only one engine?
Very often you can see smaller turboprop driven planes or jet airliners taxi to or from the gate with only one engine running. Why is that so? Primarily to safe fuel and the reduce the risk of loose debris being sucked up into the the engine.
But there is more to it than just turning off the engine or starting it later. Hydraulic, electrical and air-conditioning systems have different layouts and duties, meaning some engines create the necessary hydraulic pressure for the braking system for example or the power the nosewheel steering. So some system knowledge is required before turning off an engine during taxi.
Also, thermal stress is an issue. Many aeroplane manufacturers recommend that the engine needs to be running at least three minutes prior to applying take-off power to reduce thermal stress on the engine. Similar scenario when taxiing inbound with one engine. After applying reverse thurst, you need to let the engines cool down for three minutes at idle power before shutting it down entirely.

That is not an "engine", it's just a fan to cool the pilot's face - just watch the pilot sweating if this fan ever stops in flight!

@@tdoheron, glider pilots are more cool than parasites, in my opinion. I like having more than one engine, especially over hostile terrain and extended bodies of water. I have experienced the known psychological phenomenon that whenever you are flying single engine in an area where you cannot glide to a survivable spot (say, 50NM out of Iceland, heading for Greenland) your one-and-only engine will invariably start sounding like it is chewing gravel, not oil! It takes a looong while to accept to the fact that the problem is in your head, not the engine.

This video couldn't have been more perfectly timed. I just got home from vacation, and I managed to get myself to fly on a MD-90, and I noticed while we were taxiing, engine no.2 wasnt in operation until we were just about to rocket out of there. For a few minutes I was curious until now. Thanks captain!

As a ground handler that operates with q300 and q400, it does really help to taxi to gate with engine 2 only running. That is because us ground handlers on the ground, have to connect the GPU on the left side. So it really helps and i think is a bit more secure for both parts! :) I know my english is terrible😝

I have daily turnarounds with Q300s and Q400s. They often taxi with engine 1 off, but occasionally with both engines on into the stand. Engine 2 powers the hydraulic system a captain told me. I don't think the shut down engine has a main purpose to provide safety for ground handlers. When EMB175/190, B737NG or A320s arrives, both engines are on even though the GPU connection is on the right/center/left side of the aircraft. Different procedures between airlines and ground handling companies. Some have to stay outside the red line until the aircraft comes to a complete stop, we put the chocks on the nose wheel and GPU and then wait for the engines and anti-collision to turn off. Then we approach the rest of the aircraft with cones and chocks.

Well that is an advantage on the Embraer 145 where they do the other engine for taxis on the opposite engine for taxis out for takeoff compared to taxis back on landing.

Actually, this helps safety, since you have a lower chance of a dual part failure if there's a difference in cycle time. The same principle applies to RAID Arrays in Computers: When a disk fails, and all of the disks in the array were bought in the same lot, there's a good chance that another one will fail shortly after, especially during the rebuild where the stress is higher. This is typically avoided by using same model disks that have different lot numbers and used time on them.

Not really, since the engine time and cycles are tracked individually. A cycle is counted as 1 flight, and ground operating time doesn't generally get counted... only flight operating time. Of course, there will be a difference in time/cycles if an engine has to be changed.

Even with brand new airplanes, you want to change out a new engine with older engine Every engine has its own pedigree. They move from airplane to airplane. Much better to have two from different lots and life cycles. Way less likely to a common failure mode.

Hi, Captain! First things first! I really love your YT-Channel! It's informative and really entertaining as a viewer! Thanks for your time spent and keep the the channel up! I work as a lighting-designer on touring productions. Thanks to all flight personal (ground an air) for doing such a incredible job every day! Because of my job I fly often and always enjoy it, since when I was a boy, I always dreamed to be a pilot! That love never dies! But here is my question! As I mentioned earlier, I work as a LD for shows. On open-air gigs I sometimes get requests from the next airport to switch off at least the fixtures that will fire to the sky. BTW, it was always professional and friendly, no bad experience here during communication! Nowadays, so called "moving lights" are state of the art on all events. So it depends on the show situation, witch of them will point towards the sky during show. And with the eyes of a lighting guy and for sure with the eyes of the audience pointing up with some devices simply looks good! What is the major problem with open-air situations and flight procedures? Are pilots really blinded from the lighting fixtures? You guys will always have precedence for me. So I will always switch off the "Sky-lights" if you ask me for. Even if it somehow doesn't make my life easier. Because I have to perform as well in front of 20000 pax. But I am just simply interested to hear the standpoint of a captain! So, thanks in advance for your answer! Can't wait for your next Video! I wish you good flights! Keep it up! :)

At one point Joe was a Captain for Air Berlin operating their 737s. While now he is a First Officer for Cargolux, and technically you could call him that, I’m sure that everyone would appreciate that you refer to him as his KZfaq name, or Joe. Right? It seems really shady to just put him down like that. Maybe it’s just me though. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Airbus A380 the last 2 characters is just the airline code. So the planes are the same, just someone else purchasing it.

lol I tried taxiing on one engine in a flight simulator and the plane turns to one side for example, if I turn off engine 1 the plane turns to the right due to power of engine 2

"In the far end of an MD-80" - oh, my poor ears can relate. Flew a fair bit on those in and out of Stockholm for my work back in the early 2000s. Somehow we always, ALWAYS, ended up sitting in the last couple of rows with a close-up view of the engine housing. MD also stands for "Made Deaf" :)
