Supposedly, the people who get it...get it. Today I'm talking about the appeal of The 1975 as they're currently on tour and frontman Matty Healy is making waves with his ambiguous charismatic charm and ability to make people simultaneously love him and hate him. The more the I listen to The 1975 the more I like them. However, please tell me what you think of them in the comments. If you like them, tell me why and if you don't like them please also tell me why. I'm intrigued.

Rather than a wedding reception vibe, I think it's more of a funeral- the flowers on the ground, black suits, the dancers carrying matty off at the end. This also makes more sense when you know that the song is bout school shootings. You can also notice the dancers holding their hands in the air and running through the background which is obviously symbolic when you know the lyrics!! there are guilty pleasures though The concept is fairly easy to grasp: "Something you consider to be shit, but you enjoy it anyway" As in, I normally listen to the Grateful Dead, Breakout, Beatles, Stones, Kinks, stuff like this. But then again I did enjoy for some time Sunrise Avenue's two hits or "I'm not rich, but i live like a millionaire" song. All three of these songs are. absolute garbage, but there are times when I find them quite appealing. It's a guilty pleasure.

@@guciowitomski3825 and exactly why I said for ME and not for YOU/ everyone. I am quite aware of the definition of the term "guilty pleasure" . I PERSONALLY have zero guilt when it comes to the music I enjoy, but perhaps I am at an age where I realize that opinions of others have no bearing on my enjoyment and vice versa. It's so freeing. I don't judge other people's musical tastes as opinions in the arts are so subjective. What is shit for us could bring someone else intense pleasure. I don't think it's guilt so much as embarrassment to admit what others deem shit. I am not embarressed by much anymiore.

@@ElectricCavegurl but, it's not about guilt or embarrassment towards others. It's about what you believe is bad or good. That was the entirety of my point. What is funny about guilty pleasure is exactly that even though you dislike something, you still like it. It's that paradox that makes it a guilty pleasure. The songs I mentioned are generally well liked and most people would never think of calling them a guilty pleasure.
@ElectricCavegurl

I think the 1975 gets a lot of criticism from critics because their music is unashamedly poppy and in other places all over the place in terms of genres. I think critics feel like they're a pop band masquerading as a rock band and doing well, and there's more than an element of snobbery in it. Their albums are often more like mix tapes than albums. Matty himself is controversial in part because he's incredibly dry with his sense of humour and his lyrics often tow the line between beautifully self-aware and poetic, and houlier than thou political statements. I'm someone that has always gravitated to sad music as a way of wallowing in my feelings, sort of basking in my own pity. I realised over time how much music can impact your outlook for good or bad. The first time I listened to Love it if We Made it I went in a whole other direction purely because of the 1975 and started gravitating much more to uppity music. The song is the embodiment of trying to get through some very heavy times (the themes are dreadfully depressing) but the tone of the song itself is so unbelievably catchy and positive you can't help but bop along. I now love bands like the 1975 who wear shimmering happiness as a badge of honour to bring positivity to the masses, even though they might not be feeling that way internally.

@@TheEndless560 pretentious micro-essay incoming... each of those bands I mentioned were pop-distillations of the experimental music of their zeitgeist. Bowie and U2 incorporated Eno & Lanois' connection to the burdgeoning ambient music & early sampling community into stadium pop-rock format, Radiohead distilled the up-and-coming experimental electronic (aphex, etc), 2-step, and underground dnb/triphop into a pop rock format. Arcade Fire took the neo-classical and experimental baroque elements (seen blatantly in both Colin Stetson and Sarah Neufeld being in the actual band) and formatted it into a stadium pop-rock package ppl could get behind. The 1975 are doing the exact same thing with the fringe music of today- the resurgence of Burial/garage music, the neo-classicalism of the Erased Tapes label sounds, the direct incorporation of BI's sampling, obvious Reich influences, etc. And formatting it into a simpler form for the People-of-Today. Musicheads of the day for each of those bands mentioned lamented int he press at the time that they were all lame copies of 'real experimental music'. So again- similarities shown in your very comment. But we know that's not a pop bands job. A truly good (art-focused) pop band distills those generally inaccessible source materials into more digestible forms for the general public to get a taste of- and then- hopefully: seek out the deeper source material. That's why so many experimental artists fuck with them. They fuck with good art so they're trusted. Idk man- in the sea of over-saturated, boring, reductive, type-beat-style artists: I'd rather an artist thats extremely well-versed in good shit and TRYING be as big as they are. over + out.

That’s the thing about the band, their music is supposed to be a commentary on modern pop music by using out dated music genres and twisting them with Mattys lyrics. They were originally writing emo music but everyone was doing that so to stand out they created this bright vibrant sound to contrast their serious look. They basically satirize pop music by making the best pop music 😆

I've been a die-hard fan since their first album, but THIS song is now my favourite of theirs. Beyond the super bop-able synth-rock groove, I find the lyrics to be quite powerful. Matty has drawn attention to American gun culture in the past in She's American ("And I think she's got a gun, divinely decreed and custom made"). But this song comes right out with it and doesn't shy away. From start to finish, it paints a vivid picture of gun violence motivated by "incel" dogma. And I think the juxtaposition of dark lyrics and upbeat hooks makes it all the more jarring and powerful.

More The 1975 content!!! 🥰 Thank you, Justin. They're my favorite band & I love hearing your educated thoughts-I could talk about this band all day long. 💗

Justin is absolutely right about that clapping pattern. It's got me all revved up just sitting here at my computer. Gonna have to try that next time my baby is fussing and see if it plucks him out of it. Also, by the end I was as excited about this band as I had been dismissive at the start. Justin's enthusiasm is so contagious.

i've only recently become a fan but I first heard about the 1975 during my senior year of college, when their song "Chocolate" was getting really popular. I liked some of their stuff but I didn't really give their music a proper shot until this month. their albums are really good musically and very fascinating, but I also respect their courage to question everything through their music, to talk about the things that don't get brought up much (and maybe need to be). I appreciate the depth and earnestness of their songs, and how they hide deeper, darker thoughts in upbeat guitar riffs and dance rhythms. But even as musicians alone, they are insanely and undeniable talented.

Have loved them since I saw you do Part of the Band, I think they are a really important band, especially lyrically. they speak to modern issues / situations in a really beautiful way, in that it doesn't seem out of place...they are singing about the internet cultural divide etc but doesn't sound preachy or non-lyrical

Just saw them for the 2nd time in years. Such a good show!!! They are the only band/artist that Id pay to see several times (without having new music) currently. I'm hoping to catch them at 1 or 2 festivals/shows next year! I didn't realize people disliked them so much (?)

I’m a new listener of theirs but I honestly haven’t heard a bad song yet. Being funny in a foreign language literally has no bad songs whatsoever and might be one of my favorite albums of all time.

“I heard chocolate once and it was shit” was my honest opinion of the band, but I went with my best friend to see them out of sympathy.. when it got to the end of the show and they played ‘the sound’ and in the video they showed the negative comments they received.. one of which; “I heard chocolate once and it was shit”. Never did I ever think a band could be so meta. Matty always talks about the importance of feeling “personally addressed” by art, and how video game Easter eggs deliver the same effect. For me personally, I feel the lyrics were written for me: all their best songs include lines which I can relate to more than anything else, ever.

So my normal genre interests are in midwest emo, alternative emo, hardcore etc. I've loved the 1975 since the Sex EP. I always thought they amalgamated so much influence quite clearly, including quite evidently indie and emo. One of my favourite song is a two-step garage remix of Head.Cars.Bending on Sex, how many bands can account for such variety in their discography that actually works? They're complex and simple at the same time. Healy is an odd character, definitely an enigma and it's hard to discern what is the "bit" or "act" and what is genuinely him, but that is of course the point. He's a true frontman.
