My name is Jay Swanson - I'm an American writer living in Paris on an artist visa. Paris (yes the one in France) has been my home for years now and I have every intention of staying here for as long as they'll have me. I write science-fiction and fantasy, vlogged daily for 3+ years, and love pizza a little too much. Now I make videos about visiting Paris, traveling in Europe, and try to share what I've learned along the way. I hope you enjoyed what you found.

@@tomlengyelgb as you said, if you plan ahead is affordable. Not to mention there are other ways of traveling with planes and buses, I've lived in Europe as a student and I managed to travel a lot and got some pretty good deals by planning my trips or just checking out the companies' websites for some good promos.

When I lived in Paris I went to London for a mental health break because I was swimming in the deep end of the French language pool (I arrived not speaking a word, and was there for long-term work) and I needed an occasional respite to allow my brain to settle.

I’m an American living in London with an American friend who has lived in France (not Paris) for 30 years. Since I moved to London a few years ago she went from zero trips to London to averaging twice a year lately. She loves it. We go to art exhibits together when she visits and she takes in west end shows and eats a variety of food that is harder to come by back home. Her most recent visit she said that she used to not understand people choosing city life but after spending time with us she gets it now.

Hi Jay! If you like wandering around London, I would suggest you check out a fellow youtuber of yours - Joolz Guides. He does little tours around very many neighbourhoods of the city and shares interesting bits about the buildings, the history of the neighbourhood etc. It would certainly be cool if somebody in Paris did something similar. As for seeing a city through the eyes of somebody who actually lives there - I prefer that much more than hopping from one tourist attraction to another. It gives you the actual sense of the city itself. And you must be doing a great job at that with recommending people the places that you actually visit at a daily basis👍

London is one of the best cities in the world to just wander around - pick your neighbourhood, learn a little of the history, watch a few 'London walks' KZfaq videos and that's your day right there - stop off in a pub, café, restaurant when you feel like it. You don't have to spend a fortune. Many of the big attractions are too crowded and can be very expensive - but the back streets are often charming with fascinating surprises; many museums and churches are free to enter and the pubs along the riverside are a joy in summer - just watch the world sail by.

That's one thing I love when I've been in Europe is it's pretty easy to hop on a train and in a couple hours be in a totally different city or country from where you started. I like Paris. It's SOOO interesting and it's what made me want to take French to begin with - so I could visit Paris and not worry about language. HOWEVER! Unless your French is at a level where it's second nature, you still have a level of stress that can become exhausting. I was always translating. My brain was so tired and yeah - the lack of customer service and all the picky bits that start to grate on you about a big city are magnified when you're exhausted, mentally. London. I LOVE London. I feel at home, there. I'm from a larger city and so cities don't bother me too much, but feeling "adventurous" in another country, but speaking my own language, is relaxing. I don't feel as mentally spent when I visit London. Physically, walking 30k steps a day can kick my butt, but I love it, so I push through. I know I have so much more to see in this world, but I'll keep going back to London, and probably Paris, too. 😉 No worries!

8:16 good to see you going into a Fuller's pub. They're primarily a brewery in west London, so if you're buying their own brand beers in their locations, it's so much cheaper than buying a pint of the known-world-wide brand names. They have a nice bitter that isn't super strong so you can continue to sup as you eat some good food and get merry but not blind drunk. One other pub chain like that is Nicholson's. Whenever my wife and I get back to London, we go to the White Lion between Covent Garden markets and the tube station. Their pies with mash and carrots are incredible.

I would pay for a never ending Eurostar ticket and a couple of Ferry tickets and trying not to thing about the channel tunnel so that I could routinely travel from one to the other as I pleased. Here’s hoping I never lose my sense of adventure and decide to stay in one place. The food ALONE is worth a quick jog to London! Sure Paris has fantastic food. And a better variety than many places. Once you earn enough points and have a frequent pass, any premium ticket (Paris/London and back is €33, suggesting frequent pass is a basic ticket. Not sure but I would dig a little deeper. I lived in Paris for nearly 4 years, left in 2013 and moved to London. I was back in Paris last summer for 3-4 weeks and I must say I wouldn’t move back. It’s still a nice city but the heat was unbearable outside, mixed with the smell of cigarette smoke on every corner from terraces just not my vibe. Also Paris did well in pedestrianising streets or restricting traffic (Rivoli eg) but that lead to lot of gridlocks all over the city so I think air quality is much worse in Paris. London air is so much cleaner, its also breezy and the buildings are much lower in general with tons of large open spaces - feels less claustrophobic than Paris (especially the inner arrondissements with the narrow streets). The disadvantage of that is London is so spread out it takes ages to get from point A to B.

I think that for some people, an itinerary works. But if you are someone who purely likes to explore, then I think something like Paris in my pocket is perfect. When I first visited Paris in 1992, it was part of a European trip and Paris was just a "stop on the way". However, I broke away from my group and just walked around Paris for 10 hours. That was one of the best decisions of my life. Had I stayed with my tour group, I probably would have looked at Paris as another "tourist place". Your itineraries seem to be taking that "boring tourism" stuff out of it, which I like! It's a mixture of both. Good luck!

Jay, if you want Indian food then please drop by India sometime. September-December is ideal unless you’re ok with hot summers.

In London, I like to have a roast beef and Yorkshire Pud at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese which is in the Fleet Street area, about a block away from my father's old office from the 1940s through the 1960s which is gone now, of course. Sure it's touristy, but you're a writer so how can you pass up a chance to sit where Charles Dickens sat? Inspiration, good sir, plus a beer and the aforementioned meal couldn't be bad. The first restaurant in which I had my first dinner in London in 1959 is long gone from Jermyn Street -- Dover sole meunière, veg and ginger beer which at that time was unavailable in the US. Soho used to be loaded with both Italian and Chinese places. Haven't a clue about today. Last time I went to London from France, it was by ferry -- no chunnel. I think they hadn't even started building it yet. I can recommend some things for you in Amsterdam should you ever brave the journey.

It makes me laugh when people love London & hate the idea of living in Paris. London is sooo big it's exhausting, after a day I can't wait to leave. I was there in November & I genuinely don't find people any less pushy on public transport or less miserable than in Paris. In fact it never ceases to surprise me how polite Parisians can be & after 31/2 years here the novelty has definitely worn off. London is as great and storied a city as Paris but even the best pubs can't replace the café terrasse experience and capital for capital, London is as dirty, polluted and crowded as Paris. Maybe more so.

I think British pubs are a pretty unique thing. They're there for everyone - young, old, local or tourist and can offer a warm welcome on a cold night! There are plenty of 'pubs' in Europe of course but it's not the same thing.

Jay, it’s obvious you take great pleasure in eating and drinking wherever you travel and that seems to be your M.O. Have you tried sitting still at an outdoor cafe to people watch or chat with others sitting next to you? I believe you’re missing out on life’s other simple pleasures. Take time to really get to know someone. (Read book by David Brooks) You will spend a lifetime getting to know yourself and miss out on meeting the love of your life! IMHO

Ironically, I met a woman from Hong Kong at Monmouth coffee when I asked to share her table, since there weren't any free - she's sitting just off camera as I'm not one to film strangers if I can help it - and we had a lovely chat. What you see in these videos is very much me, but remember it's also only 8min of me out of 1,440 😉
