Why do we love people we're related to? Compared to strangers, why do we feel such a deep sense of connection with our family members? Sure, they're nice to us, we take care of each other, and we often live with them, but there has to be a deeper biological reason. That reason, unsurprisingly is evolution. In this video, I explain why taking care of our family, or even dying for them, makes sense in the eyes of evolution.
SOURCES:
This video covers more than a half century of evolutionary biology theory and observation, but here's some reading if you'd like to learn more:

I've actually told my kids this. It doesn't make it any less real or any less strong. Evolution is the reason other emotions like fear exist. Doesn't make being afraid of the massive fire burning your village to the ground any less real or strong. Just because it is from nature and a response to evolution doesn't make emotions any less valuable. If anything it is the reason why you value them. They're traits that survived billions, more like trillions,, of yrs of evolution because they work. They're important for survival. Especially for socail dynamics of nearly all types.

I "grew up" in an abusive "family". It has always fascinated me how there seems to be a subset of humans that forego all that is outlined above and actively work to decrease their offsprings fitness in favour of their own. I haven't found a good source that looms at this from an evolutionary perspective yet.

@kepspark3362

It's a theory. It's made by humans who seem to share that common trait of loving their children & calling those who don't as just anomalies. Those who wouldn't sacrifice their lives won't say it out loud to them to avoid criticism. So it's biased. That's why it won't make it into the theory of everything. I don't think it is correct. I personally don't have that kind of bias/love towards kids. To me, they are a wild card depending on how they are raised. Every killer was once a "cute" baby & just because a baby is deformed & ugly doesn't mean it'll grow up to be a bad human. Like I said, it's just self-justification for some humans.
@hyacinna
@hyacinna Жыл бұрын
@@kepspark3362 not even towards your OWN offspring? in a psychologically stable situation (conscious or not) you should feel endless love through the need and impulse to nurture them. Youre sounding like a misanthropist rather than a curious person. People who dont have the vital biological need to protect and care for the vulnerable to continue and create better generations especially one that is within their ingroup (family, village, tribe, ethnosetc) are no more than anomalies, its incredibly anti-social and dangerous for the human species, if this was to become the norm, we would die out lmao. "Those who wouldn't sacrifice their lives won't say it out loud to them to avoid criticism" A dead mother will leave a dead child, so this makes sense too, to just (swiftly) do away with a child that might die of starvation and such, but most would undeniably especially if it was their own, this argument doesnt make it a hoax that most people care more for (their own or not) offspring than they do other societal members. You calling it a bias to put the human need for ultimate care for the vulnerable and future generations is truly unbecoming and quite anti-social. "just because a baby is deformed & ugly doesn't mean it'll grow up to be a bad human" surely not in terms of morality but in terms of survival in a world without modernity, pretty much, thats why disabilities have not been considered the pinnacles of beauty in most cultures (atleast) pre-modernity and have actually not been treated very well, undesirable biological defects and traits that make the survival of the group quite harder. "Every killer was once a "cute" baby" Most babies dont grow up to be anti-social, some do and in cases of it being genetic/neurological, thats not detectable in infancy especially by common folk, what even is the point of this argument? that you shouldn't exert the best heights of human compassion you dont use among common men towards kids because they might just end up as monsters? I mean that tends to be the cause but idk, have a good day spark.

Penny Lane Sorry for being a bit off topic, but listen to me a bit. What is your job , after you job ,love etc. to have free time: -Super artificial intelligence . -Super 3d printer. Then ..... -I study how to make superhuman and super-powers. -Children think simply become superman is to fly, is to become super hero. -My superhuman means reading and learning the world's thoughts, knowledge, and technology the fastest way to be super smart, and to make the arms super-smart. -Hey, paraphernalia. -You paranoid me, at least you do not drown 4.0 technology, I need the resources and time to fulfill my dream. Hey, those technologies can completely eradicate human. -Who is really the waste? -Criminals, murderers, psychiatrists, etc. -The lack of maturity of men, or weakness, effeminacy, uselessness of women. -Broken men have to surrender to themselves, with their own instincts, with their inner self, and incompetent women to surrender to the outside forces, to others, with weak character. exhausted. -Because male instincts, too much character, too strong men are not only aggressive with men but also violence against women. Because of the physicality, the personality of women can not withstand men. If I can not find a way to completely remove the instincts, habits, characteristics (especially aggressive men, like unhealthy contention), then it is humanity, new waste. Because the discriminating person as a man does not win himself, it instincts his habitual personality and emotions. Because people who are discriminated against like women (whether or not pregnant), people with disabilities, other religions, races, and other disadvantaged groups do not have enough intelligence, physical strength, meeting, etc., can not win the power outside. If we do not do anything to change the male virtues and incompetence of women, it is the whole of humanity that deserves to become dispossessed (I say essentially superpower ,NOTE: only reprogramming the brain rather than mind controlling). Mind control means you are controlled by others. Reprogramming the brain means having a tool to change personality, habits, will, etc., without too much difficulty, and cause too many unpleasant feelings. The proof is, answer me two questions. Why do men sin more than women? If men and women are completely equal in all aspects of physical, intellectual, etc., then the crime rate is 50/50 or best is 00/00 or will men remain dominant? For most people, gender equality means that men and women are equal in education, in family, in economics, in politics,etc. and eliminating violence against women. For me, gender equality means almost completely eliminating gender, to the extent that there are no heroic or princess-free heroes, no virginity, no physical distance between the sexes, etc. .. or any gender difference, gender is the only effect is married, sex and child birth, there are two sex only to display, only to let us not lose face with other species (that is, we lose a lot of other species, if we completely eliminate sexual reproduction in human). It's a little bit odd, but do not ask why the universe is so vast, lonely, why there are no monsters, why are there no intelligent creatures, why not dinosaurs, without Ask why we have discriminated. Why do women lose a lot of blood and still live, why men have nipples, BUT you do not ask why women have to go to hospital to give birth, why there is labor (even death), why There are only minor differences in sex and gender that cause conflict, men and women can not even talk to each other, even when men and women talk in body language, feel. Do you know that the problem of men and women alone has caused so many problems, not to mention that things are much more serious than the earth, and the more serious the consequences should be. about monsters, about aliens. We would love to have machines like super 3D printer and super artificial intelligence to free up labor and set up your own agriculture, industry and service, then the kind Super power, super smart and super smart, etc., and the most important thing is that there is a technology that allows it to be very easy to change completely instinct. , habits, personalities, etc., which is more important than fire, wheel and internet etc ... I do not want anything now. The conflict is extremely serious even when it comes to men and women, not to mention black and white, nationality, religion, political opinion, etc. , even humanity will still be in serious conflict, even if 7 billion people are completely same identical (no monsters or aliens, etc) ,will still conflicts for greed and selfishness. The only way is to have the technology to become superhuman and super-power, then the technology to reprogram the brain to change personality, habits, will, etc., is very easy, if they I have the technology to change the criminal nature easily, I will also have a way to change that makes us no longer feel lonely even if an individual for a universe (including micro) and They EVEN will not need biological food. I issued an ultimatum I ISSUED AN ULTIMATUM: IF WE CAN NOT FULLY RESOLVE THE PROBLEM JUST MENTIONED RIGHT NOW , PRELIMINARY ISSUE THE NEW LAW IS ONE INDIVIDUAL FOR FER ANY 1 POSITION IN UNIVERSES ,1 INDIVIDUAL CREATURES PER UNIVERSES (EVEN INCLUDING MICROBIOLOGY), WHICH ALSO HAVE BEEN INFINITELY DISCONTINUED. WITH A COMPLETELY INSENSITIVE PERSONALITY, COMPLETELY INSENSITIVE COMPLETELY WITHSTAND THE FOREVER LONELINESS OF BRAIN REPROGRAMMING TECHNOLOGY. PROMOTE, DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE ANYTHING, DO NOT HAVE ANY QUESTIONS WITHOUT ANY ANIMALS,ANY ALIENS ,ANY DRAGONS ,ANY MONSTER etc.,THERE IS COMPLETELY NO CRIME, NO THINGS, WHETHER IN THE HEADLINES, etc. I HAVE LIVING HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY AND HEAVENS ,STOP, NEVER ,I HAVE WORN OUT MY EARS, BRIAN AND ITCHY EARS .

May be because all human share 99.7% of DNA similarities. So by saving a complete stranger you still manage to save a part of your DNA similarities.
@tanmoysd2721
@tanmoysd2721 6 жыл бұрын
And not only that, Suppose in an incident you get a chance to save the life of either a total stranger old man or a total stranger baby. Whom will you save ?? Let me guess, most people will save the baby rather than the old man. Now, WHY ? Because the baby has the chance to produce more human like you who carries 99.7% DNA similarities with you on the other hand the old man probably has lost the power of reproduction . This is the same reason why in an event of accident children are rescued first. Remember when Titanic drowned the children was saved first. Well, during saving people no one thinks of DNA and Gene obviously but in subconscious mind that's what they do and this instincts of thinking that way is also buried down in our DNA .

@@joshuabenedictj Yeah I was curious, we do most things based of what gives us the best chance at survival but I've never understood why we are capable of loving pets so much it's not like they can spread my genes, I think family is who you chose to be with. I don't love most of my family (not being edgy just the way it is) but I love the people I live with and my pets. Anyways guess loving things reduces stress which can increase lifespan.

Just a few days ago I was contemplating why many animals care a lot for their offspring without putting emotions in the equation. Of course that's because they want to pass on their genes. Then this video came out with clearer and more detailed explanation. Thanks IOTBS team.

animals have emotions too
@kindlin
@kindlin 6 жыл бұрын
In what sense? I would argue that no animals feel emotions in the way we think of them. Animals may feel some emotions, like elephants and loss, or your when your pets are happy and excited, but no animal has much more than a subset of the emotional spectrum we are a part of. Also, it is unknown if any other animal has a theory of mind, which is something not even human children acquire until about 4 years old. Additionally, the ability to plan out a chain of cause and effect is shown in only limited capacity in the most intelligent of animals (crows come to mind). With all of these inherent deficiencies obvious throughout the animal kingdom, and the other numerous deficiencies not brought up here, I believe it's clear that emotions, in the way we think of them, are foreign to all other animals on this earth. Again, some animals do have some semblance of emotions in some contexts, but this is limited.
@Angelwitch99

kindlin I have had several pets over the years, about six cats, four dogs, countless fish, two guinea pigs, a snake, a horse and two frogs to be more precise and with the exception of the fish I can tell you without a doubt that all of them experience fear, sadness, annoyance, excitement, joy, and yes love among many other emotions which I saw them express, very clearly, first hand. It is my opinion that anyone who spends more than two seconds with an animal regardless of species would never suggest that they do not experience just as many emotions as humans or that they do not feel as deeply as we do.

That makes sense, but what about adult humans saving the lives of random children that are unrelated to them? What comes to mind is teachers giving their lives in the event of an active shooter, or putting themselves at much greater risk for their students sake. I am willing to bet an average adult human would definitely value children's lives as more worthy than an average adult.

The group of writers behind the scenes are the smart ones, although it really doesn't take much to Google a bunch of sources on a single subject and make an essay out of it. This video was made to make them money first and foremost, hence the ads at the start of the video and the company plug-ins i.e. 23 & Me. Judith Huling-Cadieux There’s more to it because humans are extremely social animals. If you take an animal like a hamster or something they wouldn’t really care and wouldn’t accept children that’s not biologically theirs (most of the time) because they’re solitary animals. Compare that to humans we are extremely social and form bonds to non-related individuals so add that to environmental factors and you could love biological and adopted kids equally. I mean you can see this in other social animals like cats and dogs and wolves and lions. Sometimes if you see like a mother of a cub die you’ll see the pack (in terms of lions and wolves) essentially adopt the baby. Or in cats and dogs they’re much more accepting of babies that aren’t theirs. I used to foster cats and once I had a momma cat with 4 babies but 2 of them weren’t even her babies yet she still lest them nurse on her and she raised them exactly the same as her own. So really, it’s still evolution lmfaoooo because evolution is what made us social

You love your family because all mammals share similar emotional hardware in their brains. You are being driven by those emotions. You don't magically figure out true biological kinship and start making sacrifices based on it. You will sacrifice for completely unrelated organisms like adopted kids, random kids, people, animals, etc. If you look at mammalian behavior in general, they are all doing it too. As long as doing so doesn't cause even bigger problems like starving, or being eaten, etc. ;)

You say that your infant son has a higher reproductive potential than your brother, but I disagree. If your brother is already sexually mature, then there are far fewer barriers standing between him and reproduction than there are for your son. Your son could fall ill and die before he reaches sexual maturity, and there's a high chance that he would in the world we evolved in. It's apparent to me that relationships in terms of shared genes is only part of the picture. We evolved in a world where infant mortality rates were very high; far to high for a single infant to have a higher reproductive potential than a sexually mature adult. There must be some other variable that increases the value we give to our own offspring, because reproductive potential doesn't really make sense.
@Ostensibly_Mellow
@Ostensibly_Mellow 5 жыл бұрын
The baby might not have a higher likelyhood of reproducing, but he does have more _potential_ . Here, 'potential' refers to the maximum *possible* amount of reproduction, which is higher in someone younger, because they have the highest amount of possible time.

Evolution only cares about offspring and the next generation to come. Offspring is what keeps a population alive, not the individuals already living. Infant mortality rates don’t matter as much as you’d think because stabilizing evolution would try and take care of that problem. An individual doesn’t matter in a species, what the population favors and passes on to survive, does.

So true. I always carry a rocket launcher around with me. The next time somebody calls me senile I will say "I carry this around so that when a bus full of velociraptors is going to kill my son, I can blow up the bus and save both of us."

Sorry, not implying it is creepy. It just sounds creepy. It's just been my experience on KZfaq when someone wants to see someone's wife or girlfriend it's so they can judge them and say what they would do with them if they think they are good looking or how mean they can be if they don't find them attractive. I mean I see you are a girl by your name, but these days that doesn't seem to matter.

1108chuck Erm. Okay, I see. But you should know I had none of those intentions; I never even realized that someone could draw to those conclusions. I just wanted to see the women who birthed the child, nothing else.

Why do your siblings only have 50% of your genes? Their genepool is made of exactly the same genepool as yours. Twins even have the same mixture of genes. Can someone enlighten me (an only child) about this? And how does this explain half sibling / step sibling relationships? Is a real sibling always more worth to save? I doubt that evolution makes a difference there.

This is a good question. For siblings (and really for all relatives) the fractions are averages. So you might have more or less than 50% of your sibling’s genes bc of meiosis, if you average a ton of sibling ratios you get ~50%

Also, evolution is messy, not entirely efficent, it cant really know the DNA of the target, so it might get confused by step siblings and the like.

My mom always said, "it's amazing how the same two people, can do the same thing, in the same place four times, and get dramatically different results Everytime" I have 3 siblings and none of of look or act alike, because none of us got the same combination of genes
