Alright Whovians, if you haven’t watched Doctor Who in a few years it might just be time to hop back in the TARDIS (but also go back and watch the old seasons if you can....especially Peter Capaldi’s seasons, don’t sleep on 12!!) I was admittedly super nervous when I heard they were trying a soft reboot of the show, I didn’t want any big changes. But this reboot did everything right and more. So here’s a maybe too deep analysis of why the show works again (and why you should definitely watch!)
This video was made right after episode 7 so contains spoilers up until that point and does not contain any analysis or spoilers of the finale!

Can someone explain to me why Dan was even needed in the final season of Thirteen? It seemed like they were terrified of even the idea of leaving Yasmin alone with Thirteen. And to be honest, I personally think that Chibnall shouldn't have taken on the concept of multiple Doctor companions in the first place, because he obviously doesn't know how to work with it. Yasmin alone would be enough for me personally.

Jodi was done dirty by the last writer. In saying that - 14 finally getting to return to a "home" life like he hasn't had in the 60+ years of the show was so satisfying. As for these later episodes, seems like their still finding their feet. Loved the dot and rogue episodes, goblins were so-so in finding out they're expanding to supernatural now.

Longer episodes or more two parters would help deal with some pacing/plot hole issues that have been an issue since 2005. Stories used to take 3-4 hours split over multiple episodes and while I don't think that format would work with the current media paradigm, maybe have 8 -10 two hour long stories split over 16-20 hour long episodes would help rectify some narrative issues.

The thing is, I don't think they CAN make more. Took 8 months to film the 8 episodes of the first Disney+ season. And that's not counting the Christmas special. Leaving less than 4 months for the cast to take a break and/or work elsewhere. Considering they want to make one season every year, there isn't exactly room for more.

I think Chibnall thought of the three companion model from some of Classic Who like the Fifth Doctor‘s adventures. The problem is that those episodes back then were structured differently split into multiple short parts which allowed story telling with so many companions. Modern episodes length and episode numbering doesn’t allow for that. This is why two companions are the maximum in NewWho. And apparently we will see that dynamic again in season 2 (without a white male companion this time) so I’m excited for that!

We're actually talking about the episodes the same day they air, and then the next day, and then we theorize all week long... something we never, ever bothered doing during 13's run.

Oh my dear, it's Doctor Who. It's endured losing it's 1st actor (you know they pulled regeneration straight out of their butts back then, don't you?), it endured a doctor that lasted for 7 seasons, so far the longest and because of that he became the literal face of Doctor Who for a very long time. It endured being gone for big time periods. It endured two tries at "Americanizing" it. No matter what, Doctor Who endures. it's something more than just your average franchise. it's an icon and a legacy. And it's the first science fiction to get the whole problem with time travel right - well, in a science fiction sort of way. (Time and RELATIVE DIMENSION in Space is really important if you're going to travel through time.) I remember when everyone thought it was over when Christopher Eccleston left. The outcry broke the internet twice. Then David Tenant came on with that hair and the rest is history. My point it I am not concerned that Doctor Who will be going away any time soon. I've been at this geek stuff for a very long time and I've heard many people say things would go away. You should have seen how much science fiction was dismissed before Star Wars dropped. According to everyone back then, science fiction was a dying genre. And now, here we are. Isn't it glorious?

The post-Timewar Doctors were weighed down by trauma. Even in their happiest and saddest moments it was somehow subdued. The current Doctor is living in the moment and more emotional, when he's happy he's pure joy and when he's sad he's crying. That's my takeaway anyway.

I think I can sum up how I feel about this era with the 3 dimensions of character. (1. Personality, 2. Inner Drive, 3. Choice Under Pressure) Chibnalls era, all of the characters (apart from Whitaker and maybe Graham) have no personality. Even Whitaker and Graham have no drive. Graham has Cancer and is still like "oh it bothers me on occasion" and Whitaker freaking lost her home again and it tantamounts to "moody". So when it comes to Action Under Choice, theyre all nice people and the only interesting dynamic with Whitaker was when she blatantly disrepected Yaz and Yaz did butt all until she got upset and Whitaker apologised and suddenly theyre in love. Like none of them had clear major things to strive for that seperated them as individuals from the characters around them. Because of 3rd dimension, none of them were proactive or characterful, but because of 1st dimension, they were also boring. Here...in season 1... It's so buried in contrived plot stuff and anagrams that I feel the 3rd dimension is being restrained; the characters are being railroaded, they investigate Ruby's mum only when the script lets them. BUT almost everyone even the side characters have personality. Ruby and Gatwa may not actively ACT on their drive to find out where they come from (outside of ep 0 for Ruby) but its not not there. The 1st is greately improved, the 2nd dimension gives genuine potential and foundation, but the 3rd dimension isnt letting the characters be anything more than bestest friendest. It's partially episode count, we havent had time to see a variety of situations. It's partially gatwa being busy so 2 episodes COULDNT develop him. But he has more of a "I decide to save the racists even if they hate me" character-defining choice than full eps with him in it. We have a whole episode devoted to Ruby and all she really does is try one or two things that all fail in the same way then she gives up then she... takes down a politician and I dont know what this means for her because theres nothing to contrast it against; her and Gatwa have the same general excitement when experiencing things, and Ruby's external surface traits dont remotely contrast what she's willing to sacrifice for, and she's not really willing to go out of her way much. She's not very proactive and while thats not bad its not helping. She's just a generic nice person who maybe maybe wants to know who her birthmother is eventually and is otherwise happy-go-lucky and inconsequential. She has to shoot someone and almost dies and it hardly affects her or changes her. BUT she's already more ANIMATED than any Whitaker companion and for that alone feels like a more interesting character. This season to me is massively AVERAGE. But from where we came from, Averàge is Up.

Omg I didn’t know you were a Whovian!! This makes me so happy omg. Honestly this season is amazing and I’m enjoying it so much!! And honestly, all of my (very few) problems with it come from the short episode count. While almost every episode we have had was good, I feel like we needed more episodes just to let the series breathe and have some more low stakes adventures in the beginning. This would help new audiences get a sense of the tone and average day for these characters they’re following, while also allowing 15 and Ruby to connect a bit more and have some lower stakes conflict like you mentioned. That said this is still miles ahead of most everything in 13’s run and I can’t wait for next episode and the seasons in the future!!

I'll admit that I was not excited about the new season and there are some parts of it that I do not like, I personally think Ruby is a different version of Clara. I have my issues with the specials as do most shows it's not made for my specific taste, but overall loved them but I was worried that it was going to be like the last few seasons and I didn't want to watch it because while I could shut my brain off, which I do in fact need a good chunk of the time, but I decided on a whim after getting home from work to watch it. I am so glad I did, and I'm so sad that a good chunk of people are not watching it because the Doctor is now black. I think Ncuti Gatwa as such the right energy to be the Doctor and the fact that the first scene he filmed was the ending scene in the episode 'Dot and Bubble' just proves what a great actor he is and how he is the right choice to be the doctor. I cannot wait for this Friday/Saturday to see how this season ends and I will watch the other seasons he's in. I have in fact convinced my mother to give him a try, she is very vocal about her dislike of Capaldi and Jodi. She was the prime demographic when the original new series (2005 series) came out and she watched it. If y'all want to know if she likes the new series I will tell you, but she is going to watch it after all the episodes are out.

Thank you for this. A lot- and I mean A LOT- of the criticisms I see in comments online of the new season is that it's too woke. You were very kind in saying that it's an invitation to challenge the viewers' world view, instead of telling them to f off, which is what I would've done. Every episode, I feel seen and heard by the stories. And some of the stories challenge and surprise me. I love it so much and right now, with the final episode left, all I want is more. I honestly hadn't considered the music angle of why the previous seasons weren't connecting with me, but you made great points. I remember buying Rose's theme song years ago on iTunes. I'm so happy to be enjoying Doctor Who to this level again. And I'm so excited for this last episode and for my best friend to catch up as well! Although, I never watched classic who, so there's quite a bit of lore this season that goes over my head. I know of some of it, mainly because of a particular fanfiction writer whose stories I love reading. They used quite a bit of classic who's lore in their stories. Now I feel the need to go back and reread.

The “woke” criticisms of the show are not only overtly racist and homophobic but also just stale. The old guard of bitter, conservative Who fans have been making the same complaints since 2017, and frankly even since 2005, before the term “woke” was coined. They’re obsessed with ratings and a nostalgia for the Doctor Who they consumed when they were children-when they didn’t have to think about their own privilege or place in the world and when they were bullied for liking sci-fi. Now, they can’t stand the fact that others might have had it worse than them-systemically so-and feel that understanding others’ pain somehow invalidates their own personal pain. And that maybe being a miserable jerk all their lives wasn’t protecting them from more bullies but instead just making them miserable. And now a Black, queer Doctor is taking away their “safe space” by making them think about other people instead of coddling the original Doctor Who viewership that lived vicariously through a White, straight man saving the world through his cleverness. Or maybe they just hate fun and want everyone to be miserable.

14:00 this is why I think they introduced Rory as a side character in The Eleventh Hour and not a main companion. It gave Amy and the Doctor the time to legitimately bond before throwing Rory into the mix. Rory isn't a main companion until like 3/4 of the way through the season, and I don't think Arthur Darvill was in the opening credits until season 6. The Doctor needs time to bond with 1 companion and establish a dynamic before throwing more companions into the mix

When it comes to music I could t agree more. This might be long. Sorry. I don’t normally notice the music in movies unless it is off or something but when done well it seamlessly blends with the story in my mind. If I don’t notice the music it is a good thing. Now if you watch the scene with the master at the end of Jodi’s run when she got trapped in the box. (After Rasputin dance). At the climax of that scene it’s like the music never hit the emotion to tell u it was the climax and it felt so wrong. It was completely missing something. I also didn’t care for the Chibnall era in general. I felt he tried to cram too much into every episode which meant he couldn’t spend enough time on any of it to cover it successfully, that included the companions. He would have been so much better if he had introduced 1-2 of the companions and really got into their stories and then a few episodes or half season later added the third. Lastly while I think Capaldi did a great job with what he had to work with, his era wasn’t my favorite either, until Bill came along. I was not a fan of Clara. I felt that she talked down to him and he let her run the show too much which didn’t feel very doctor to me. Once she left Capaldi had room to really be the doctor. Tennet is my favorite. Ruby and the doctor show that they are great friends but since we had 2 doctor light episodes and times when they were apart, it doesn’t always feel like that closeness is justified. That is one place I hope they improve in season 2.

I loved Clara with Peter. If that's how you felt about her, you didn't really understand her that well. Of course they argue at times. That's because they have similar personalities. With Matt, she was this jewel eyed schoolgirl type because it was obvious the writers meant for her and Matt to have a crush on each other. With Peter, she became more mature and tolerable, also thanks to her being a teacher, she holds more authority. I never felt like she ran the show or talked down to the Doctor. She was just challenging his thoughts. The Doctor isn't always right, and that's okay. Peter and Clara were on the same level. Clara is the only companion who feels like a Doctor herself. There's no inferiority complex making the Doctor seem above all.. which sounds like that's what you want him to be. And that's fine because David is my third favorite. Matt will always be my Doctor though.

I became aware of Doctor Who shortly after Twelve had entered the stage when I saw clips of series 3 and series 7 and I loved the concept so much. So those were the first series I watched. Then I watched it rather achronologically (fitting for a time travel show ironically) as I bought whichever series DVD set I found at the store. Thirteen was the first Doctor I saw live and she is personally special to me because through her regeneration I found out that I’m trans! And when I started watching her episodes, it was just around the time that the far-right backlash into *every* franchise started to creep in with people complaining about female and black main characters in Star Wars or Star Trek Discovery and also Doctor Who. And I saw the flaws of the era immediately even though I loved it but one couldn’t dare to criticize it because things were so extreme black and white that criticism would mark you as a „hater“ even though you weren’t and the real haters would appropriate your comments as „proof“ that the show should be cancelled. 🙄 By now that seems to have died down a bit and you can criticize her era.

i've rewatched 12's seasons so much, especially Bill's, and somehow i've never noticed Clara's theme in the Pilot?! i'm glad i know now though, because it adds a whole emotional layer to the scene.
@ksmurthy1148
@ksmurthy1148 11 күн бұрын
honestly my main issue with the new season was how performative it felt - there were moments of genuine emotion, but even those sometimes felt more like the writer was trying to tell you HERE. HERE IS AN EMOTION. YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO FEEL SOMETHING HERE. rather than actually making you feel with the script or the acting. and i don't think any of the acting was truly bad, it just wasn't as warm and genuine as the golden years (eccleston - capaldi) were. and yes #justiceforjodi SHE DESERVED BETTER😭😭 but besides that i agree, the show has its emotional heart back at least!

One of the best takes on this season I’ve seen, making it very clear the difference between objective opinions and other opinions that are clearly affected by biases. I do think that the episode count should have increased by 2-3 episodes because Ncuti’s Doctor, though incredibly charismatic, had very weak characterization. Building up to the finale with more episodes would have made the season significantly better.

Great vid! Love the outfits(great references)! Agreed with everything you said. Chibnall really seemed to not understand basic storytelling. Which is what really hurt Jodie's run. I mean, RTD is literally using Chibnall's timeless child arc to give the Doctor a compelling want as you said.

Thank you! I'm so sick of people saying Doctor Who has gone woke. It has always been like that. If Captain Jack was introduced now, he wouldn't be half as popular because of right-wing people complaining of 'wokeness'. Doctor who has always used challenging storytelling, it has always used music, hell there have been 2 Doctor Who proms at the Royal Albert Hall! I'm actually really glad Doctor Who was helped by Disney, because it increased the shows budget MASSIVELY! Which the show desparetly needed. Studios are now putting millions more into TV productions because, in part due to Game of Thrones, studios are seeing how popular TV and streaming has become. Nearly all big studios now have a streaming service. Because of this, Doctor Who started to look really cheap, it's sad but true. You can really see the reboot has a much bigger budget. Better CGI, bigger sets, and I think the budget has allowed them to really delve into the music so much more. It all makes the quality much more impressive. For those who say it's goofy? It's always been goofy. I'm pretty sure even in the classic series there was a monster made out of sweets and one made out of socks! Doctor Who in itself is a goofy show, the brilliance of it is it can combine it with serious matters. Arguably this series has had more goofy episodes than serious ones. But that doesn't mean the show has lost all it's maturity at all. I really hope it continues and they don't cancel it, I've been loving it so much. Thank you for defending it!

The many companions thing I think was a throwback to Classic Who I believe. The problem was there was too much that changed. New writers, new Doctor, new companion, new Tardis, new theme song, new screwdriver??? Then the events that shall not be named happened irl. So there wasn't enough time to get everyone together. Like once a week, hey there's a new episode. That you can't watch with everyone else. Because reasons. Also, you have to pay for it. Then a year later oh here's a special. We hope you like it. Now wait for another year. Alright, here's a special. Man, I hope you remember what happened a year ago. Alright, well, none of that matters now. It was bad luck and timing. That being said, I love Jodie as the Doctor.

I'm waiting for the final season finale episode to drop then I'm considering to binge-watch the 4 specials along with entire season-1 reboot in one day. I stopped watching Doctor Who when it got pulled off of NETFLEX; thus, haven't seen much of Jody Whitaker as the Doctor yet... funny thing, Doctor Who never lined up with my values from the very beginning so this new season is no different for me than any other season. In a likewise manor I did NOT watch the 2005 reboot until the final season finale episode was available to watch in the USA. This time around I am concerned regarding how the show-runners have become aggressively in-your-face "agree with the message and support it or get lost" type of attitude; in turn, when the writers or cast get criticized (rather than praised) then the messaging seems to get USED as the defense to deflect the criticism. Makes me question why criticism was invited in 2005, (invited strongly due to ‘Captain Jack Harkness’ character being hyped), and now the SAME show-runners for 2024 have a blunt "simply agree with us or your a bigot" attitude. I appreciate reviews like yours as they make me more confident in the show being worthy to watch in full. I'm eager to see your option after the finale has dropped.

The time war was such a great like arc for the doctor and I think that giving the 14th doctor time to heal was a good way of finishing the 2005-2023 arc. But my god was flux and the timeless child and the destruction of galifrey so pointless and just a hindrance to the show as whole.

I tried to get into Dr. Who in my early 20's when Tennant's run was blowing up. I of course started with Eccleston's reboot, but I couldn't get through the first series though as it was just too campy for me (at the time I may have been too pretentious lol, I really disliked unserious scifi and it was giving me flashbacks to Farscape). I then tried again when Whittaker's series came out, and again didn't continue past the first season, but not because it was too campy but for some of the reasons you laid out in this video essay. However I think you may have convinced me to give Ncuti a try... I have loved him in other roles so that might help as well lol

Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's Doctors might be more to your liking. Steven Moffat generally has a much less campy attitude towards the show than RTD (though there is still plenty of comedy, he avoids things like farting aliens and Scooby Doo references that sometime make it a bit cringy)

This drama has lasted sooooo long, and many people have grown up with it. The people who "hate" the current series and the direction it is going in actually love the show and just want it to be back the way it used to be. You start watching it idenifying as the companion, then the Doctor and as you mature you become a showrunner with your own ideas of what makes it a success. At the end of the day it all revolves around our love of the show. Sometimes we like an era, sometimes we don't. A good showrunner should always reach out to the general audience, but keep in mind the fans.
