I feel like it’s considered almost a “sin” in the modern world to assert that something is *actually* better and not just “personal preference”. So when people see me buying all these old books for my kids instead of the more modern cartoon style books - or even putting them in more classic clothing instead of sparkly hot pink character t-shirts - this is supposedly me unduly imposing my so-called preferences onto my children who really deserve to just be “normal” and do “normal kid things” like watching Frozen over and over. I always hold my ground though. It’s something deep in my bones that knows it’s right even if it can sometimes be difficult for me to fully explain it with words. “Love What Lasts” is a great motto though and I’m excited to read it. Any plans to have Gibbs as a guest on the podcast or channel?

I would *love* to have Gibbs on the podcast. I've learned so much from him and am a dedicated reader of all of his work. I'll see if I can make it happen. And yes; I agree! A hierarchy is the worst thing in the modern age!

Agreed! We live in a postmodern world where the culture has largely rejected God, the Creator, Intelligent Designer, and Judge of all things good, true, and beautiful. People (thanks to Humanism at the Fall in the Garden) have decided to make themselves like God in deciding for themselves what is good and evil (or "their truth"). Humanists will tolerate anything as long as it's not claiming to be objectively truthful.

I might be one of the few males coming back to your channel from time to time. Originally, I came across one of the phone videos. It was fortuitous when you mentioned something about classical education. My twin sons are 19 now, just graduating from high school. My wife and I were familiar with the classical education early on, thoguh our life journey didn't quite allow us to do full time homeschooling. We were able to take our family to my wife's home country Taiwan for 7 years. I have tried my best to expose the boys to good quality literature and regular meaningful discussions throughout the years. My wife assisted them with mathematics and sciences. It's been hard work while we both held down full-time jobs, but I think the results were worth it! And I agree with your way of evaluating what books are worth our time.

I'm glad you've been able to stick around for more ideas beyond the phone (although, the phones is very much tied to the same ideas)! It sounds like you gave them good story, a wide spread of study, and relational discussion-all vital for learning. Well done!

Probably one of the few “non-parents” watching this video. As a student about to go into a classical school unfamiliar with how it works, I’ve been wondering this for a while. I’ve always liked classic books, now I know why! Thank you.

I was listening to an old episode of The Literary Life podcast and it echoed this same sentiment regarding fairytales. Reading the tales over and over so they become ingrained in their mind. Then when your child is ready, the Holy Spirit will allow them to see the gospel woven into everything. This message was reiterated in your video today and it was one I deeply needed to hear. Thank you for the videos and podcasts, they are an inspiration and a well needed guide.

When I was first getting excited about classical education, one friend said to me, "If you're going to homeschool, seems like one of the major advantages is being able to be a little non-traditional, rather than ultra-traditional." I wish I had responded properly (ah, the belated eloquence of the inarticulate!) but I like your video here because I think you provide a good response to that perfectly legitimate argument. Thanks!

So happy to hear it! A good classicist likes to define their terms, right? So I always enjoy asking people to define "traditional" because I'm definitely not offering a "traditional" modern education experience. Ha!

We really loved our year with the CMEC, but after reading an article by Amber Johnston about the importance of Life-Giving books, I had to go on a journey to grow and learn on my own- and wow, have I! This seems to follow Miss Mason's own example, as she was constantly reading the thoughts of the day- and changing her programs to reflect that! I love how she had students read in their faith tradition, AND opposing thoughts! It's an amazing way of solidifying our own positions, while creating empathy with those who have different backgrounds and cultures and life experiences- which give us a more full picture of our amazing, multi-faceted and beautiful God. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Amber Johnston's blog post and stories about the WHY of her own experience giving her children a full, big, beautiful world, using Life-Giving books. Bless!

Do you have the link? This is where you'll learn I'm not a Mason fan girl, so I don't think of her as the queen. While she loved a new resource (for sure!), I'm more of the classical idea that for FORMAL lessons, I use the books that have stood the test of time and spoken to what is common in/for all of us. For ordinary, leisure reading, I love to find new living books!

I’ve so been enjoying your videos and am so drawn to classical education ideals. Sorry this is probably not pertinent to this video in particular. However, have you by chance done any discussion around other types of classical curriculum in comparison to CM? I guess I ask because I’ve been looking into curriculum like Memoria Press which I’m wondering if it could be integrated with CM or if that is completely different because of her pedagogie. Thank you!

Ooh, I haven't gotten into specific curriculum but I have compared classical (of which Mason is a member) and neo-classical (of which she is not). These episodes can help you figure out if the philosophies align (even if some of the practices are different): podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-11-getting-to-the-curriculum-principle-13/id1568956517?i=1000570685630 podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ep-02-long-live-the-queen-a-philosophical/id1568956517?i=1000615272090

Oy vey! One of your listeners/common moms here. :-) I quite happen to like the Communist Manifesto. Lol, so your intro felt like a personal jab. But really, I still think it should not be discounted as an important historical/political/economic read - full of important ideas which have impacted the world - waiting to be critically explored, contemplated on and kept or discarded altogether. I am sure it is not your case, as you are my role model as a bibliophile, but we all know that there are plenty of people critiquing the ideas of Karl Marx or Magic in Stories or {Insert any Idea/Ideology} and have never even read any books or reflected on the matters. I have been guilty of such silly parroting of critiques (on some other ideas) in my youthful days and appreciate Charlotte Mason because the very idea of a liberal education offers a the promise to engage with ideas even in the least expected places. Cuz, y'know, the transcendentals transcend. Anyway, love your channel and community, Autumn!
@thecommonplacehomeschool

I didn't discount! No, no! (I do think it falls in the "old but not necessarily good for the soul" category which was the intro idea.) I hope you made it to the end; I did say we must acknowledge that everything that lasts isn't necessarily good but something within the idea has impressed, shaped, moved people. I'd put the Communist Manifesto in that category. It should CERTAINLY be read, engaged with, discussed because it has mattered in human life and action! 100%. I buy books like this because I think my kids and I do need to read them to enter into the conversation about "the good life"!
