It's true - This mic has to be one of the most hated microphones among studio geeks.
But why is that?
Are they all just elitist snobs that don't want you to enjoy anything good?
We take a look at how the Blue Yeti fares in today's standards, to figure out why everyone hates this microphone.

it's because you need to put on your studio earphones, make sure it's really quiet around you, pump up the volume a whole bunch, then slow your breathing slightly and then listen really intently... and you can maybe sordove kind of hear it.

I have a Yeti and a G-Track Pro, paid $100 for both. I'd say the G-Track Pro has slight-more treble emphasis but after I high-pass the Yeti, it sounds better post-processing. I'd say it suffers from a lot of low-end noise (such as you touching it, desk noises, typing, etc.) I have mine on an arm (no isolation) and I don't get any keyboards or clicks but I have the gain as low as it can go, Windows gain at 33/100 and I'm usually making out with it. Give it those ideal conditions and it's hard to beat, especially when most voice chat codecs typically aren't very good anyways (or are trying to save on bandwidth.)

Got a Yeti for around $100, which I think is a great price for what it is. It's well-built and easy to use, and having the choice of 4 different patterns for different use cases is a big plus for those who can't or don't want to spend the extra money for multiple mic setups. I'm getting a SM58 for vocal applications, but I think I will still be keeping the Yeti for the flexibility and ease of use.
@verlan3293
@verlan3293 2 жыл бұрын
The Yeti's pricing is absolutely awful and its audio quality is comparable to $30 microphones. Blue can only get away with that pricing due to how popular the microphone is, but popularity and pricing does not mean you're paying for quality. It's very similar to Noctua fans and coolers; they are ok/good, but tend to be extremely overpriced and at least matched in performance by alternatives and in multiple instances are outperformed by lesser-popular competitors with cheaper price tags.

@shybzrk 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bleats_Sinodai The Yeti having 4 pickup patterns isn't a selling point unless you specifically want that. 99.9% of everyone needs 1 pick up pattern and that is cardioid. The Blue Yeti has been irrelevant for a few years now with how many great USB mics are out there for around the same price if not cheaper. Take a look at the Fifine mics. Maybe Brazilian markets are different but that's how it is in the US, Canada, etc. Blue Yeti is $100 USD here

@@shybzrk I got the Blue Yeti because I'll actually be using the different patterns, and I couldn't really find anything similar over here. I use it for teams calls and pesentations with the other participants on speaker, it works very well for that purpose. Teams could probably handle the echo and noise suppression on its own now without a condensor microphone, through it won't hurt. A boom arm helps position it correctly and reduces desk noises.

I've used Neumann U87's and AKG 414's in the past and have found for live choral recordings it has incredible sound pickup characteristics when mounted on a Manfrotto and an isolation mount. At at it's cost it can't be beat for live stereo recordings. I've recently picked up a second one for other usage on stage and in my studio.

This thing is top tier for ASMR. That doesn't make it great for anything else. It definitely makes the tingles happens. I watch a lot of channels that use multiple mics with similar techniques.
@JerKKeR
@JerKKeR Жыл бұрын
I disagree, it's the worst microphone for ASMR. If the SNR mentioned in the video is correct, then it's way too quiet to to do proper ASMR with. Since you're whispering and talking quietly yet you want your viewers to still hear you, you gotta turn up your gain. However with such a Low SNR you are much more prone to clipping. Hence most ASMR KZfaqrs I see using this microphone have such conservative settings on it that I don't get tingles anyways. I don't think that most ASMRtists know their mic stuff well enough to be in a Position to say what would be great and what not. Just because everyone uses it doesn't mean it's great. Especially for the MSRP I could go and make myself a proper Dual Mic setup with a Behringer UMC202HD and give people an actual stereo ear to ear experience. If you take that into consideration, you will realize what a waste the Yeti is, especially at this community. And as was said in the video, the mic's target audience is Kids who stream and there advertising platform is KZfaqrs. ASMRtists are KZfaqrs.
@ofadetergentsud
@ofadetergentsud Жыл бұрын
@@JerKKeR The results are all that matter. The technical details don't matter at all. There is a reason it's the most popular mic in ASMR, and even rich people with plenty of mics still use it for that reason. Get embarrassed. XD

Dude I have no clue what’s wrong with your mic, but it’s most certainly not suppose to sound like that. I’ve been using a blue yeti mic for 3 years. For both videos, and for making music, it’s an ok mic. But with your mic, it sounds VERY tinny and I can hear this static noise in the background. That’s not even close to what I’ve been hearing the last 3 years I’ve had one. Are you sure that you have it on cardioid mode and not stereo or omni directional?

I may be a little late to the party when it comes to commenting on this video but I figured I'd give my take on it. I recently bought a Blue Yeti X (not the regular Yeti) brand new at $129. For that, it has 4 condensor capsules and a really sturdy, heavy build quality. Despite the mountain of complaints of Yeti owners that there's a lot of handling sound when typing, hitting the desk or picking up the microphone, I have actually noticed none of that on my Yeti X with Blue Voice enabled which includes a noise gate and noise suppression. For close to a 130 bucks this mic has an outstanding build quality, a really tall stand that is great for a taller person such as myself and quite amazing sound quality compared to a Corsair headset microphone. 10/10.

I used a Yeti for streaming on a mic arm, and in the context of gaming noise / keyboard noise (which when not having the mic on the desk could be gated/expanded out pretty effectively) it worked quite well. I never loved it, but I knew I could safely drop it on concrete, and within that context it worked out decently. I probably would have gone with a different mic, now knowing much more about what it competes with at the price, but, meh, water under bridges n such. I think as you point out - when trying to use it in other contexts that didn't have music/game noise going.... the yeti itself doesn't have a great noise floor, at least in my experience, and I quickly moved to an NT1 so that I could graduate into the xlr seats with something I knew would perform comfortably for years as a professional mic while uping my own skills on technique, room treatment, and postprocessing until hitting that magical place of having earned enough to make it to a different quality/price point if needed.

I've had one for a few years. I bought mine for quite specific reasons, but the dominant one is quality of manufacture. I work and make recordings in very out of the way places in South East Asia, and in the past in South America. Even here in Phnom Penh, which has been my base before the pandemic, it's hard to get decent audio gear. I had to have USB to interface with computer-based stuff. And when I got the Blue, it wa the one that blended the absolute assurance that two days in a jeep, and hot humid weather over 40 degrees, along with the accidents that happen in the field, were still going to leave me with working equipment. So far, it has, and while I use a Zoom M5 more often, this thing gets lot of use, and hasn't let me down. The cheap plastic that is used in many now-available USB mikes would probably be fine for most people, but not something I'm ready to risk.

I have no issues with it - but then I do use it on a boom arm. Gain is not that high and never had any noise issues. What I have seen often, however, is people setting it up wrong and talking into the end rather than the front as you are. I think I paid around $200 USD for the entire kit - so not too bad. It got me started easily and that was the main thing - XLR is another game which I am just about to jump into - but that is far beyond just a mic! (cable, input device, SD card and more depending upon your kit - making the USB mic look a bargain)

I am a HUGE fan of Blue Audio. I have the Bluebird, the Baby Bottle, two of their Ember SDC's, two of their Snowball (and yes, one of them has that RIDICULOUS, useless but freaking cool "ringer" shockmount), an enCore 100 and even a pair of Lola headphones. BUT... The Yeti is not one of them. And that is by choice. They are overpriced, and for me, I do not have a need for them. The Snowball mics are used for two purposes. One, when my office co-workers need a mic better than the device for Zoom calls at the production office and they aren't technically savvy. And, two, I have one for my Google Pixelbook Go. A chromebook that I use as a personal/non-work PC when I need to do anything on that. Otherwise, I am surrounded by studios full of gear. I simply don't have a need for it. That, and the Snowballs are almost an impulse buy at $40, and they do GREAT for the price. The Yeti? Doesn't do much better, but yet is over 3x the price. In my case, it's just basic math.

Also, I had this mic for 8 YEARS before it seemingly broke. Not sure if it was the mic or just the wire, but it started to be not recognised by the computer so I will be finally buying a new microphone (and probably not a yeti). But considering i bought it for only £90 back in the day, I'd definitely say over 8 years it was worth the value. It just isn't the best money can buy at an affordable price. its a mid level mic all in all.

So, which brands would you recommend for broadcast serious voice over works and ADR? I wish I could have the budget for a Naumann U87...! but... Røde NT2 is ok? For now I have the Blue Yeti PRO and yes, is good but there is something that is not convincing me at all. And going back to the BLUE... you don‘t believe in the 3 Blue-proprietary 14mm condenser capsules?

Had mine since 2015 when I started caring about my YT sound quality, and now that I'm a vTuber I still use it, although now I'm at a point to where I have to ask how do I increase the quality do I upgrade, or is there more options I have yet to try in OBS that increase sound clarity. I just bought a Razer Blackshark v2, and it sounds much more clear with its Auto Noice Canceling mode, meanwhile OBS tries and fails to cancel noice without clipping my audio not to mention I think finally with this Blackshark v2 a mic has finally bested in sound quality over-all with the BSv2 EQs

Room treatment matters. Even if you have the best microphone if your room is poorly treated then it won't sound good. Room acoustics really affects the frequencies of the recordings. So search up for how to make better room acoustics and you'll get best results out of it

Well I use a Blue Yeti X and at the risk of being rude I do training videos and I have had no problems and use it with Camtasia however use a boom and proper set up.... I love it in that it works for me.... however, I don't use it for gaming but only business streaming for meeting and videos. So if you want to use it as intended it works fine, in fact I had an Agency we use ask about my set up, so maybe my microphone works.....

I don’t hate the Yeti. I don’t recommend it, but I don’t HATE it either. While I currently own 3 XLR microphones, I keep it around, because it - in my books - beats many usb microphones, sound wise, ~IF~ you use it correctly. There is but one complaint I got myself have to uphold: It is overpriced, for being so overhyped back then and thus bought a lot to this day. I say, Sell this for like 80-90 dollars, without the useless desk stand, because you need a proper microphone arm or a stand for the floor anyways, thenlower the price for the (actually decent) shock mount to like 35 dollars and off you go. And sorry, a 16 bits signal is perfectly fine for a noise floor of -90dBFS. And 48kHz is a higher sampling rate than needed for most use cases. Nobody who this is aimed for, needs 24 bits 192 kHz, especially since 192kHz signals are hard to create.

Not one I'd go with. The Rode USB version of Procaster might be interesting to try (there's a few Rodes I'd like to try!) though with reasonably cheap and functional sound cards available I can't see the use for a USB mic even in my away from studio set up. The Blue Yeti is and remains a classic. It has served me well for many, many years, and still use it. Regarding USB microphones, there is no major difference in sound quality, and Yeti's many sound patterns make it a perfect microphone in many contexts. The problem is that people need to learn and use it properly to get optimal sound quality. I have XLR microphones that sound worse, and note that these require a good audio interface as well. Still in 2024, you can only imagine how many youtube videos have been recorded with the Blue Yeti, and I know several musicians who use it both for vocals and acoustic guitar without anyone having a clue that it is the "dreaded Blue Yeti". It is a misunderstood microphone, mostly because those who use it do not understand sound and not least acoustics.
@Dremist

It was a great and popular microphone many years ago with many users. But with technologies becoming better, newly released microphones will sound better as it uses old microphone flaws as benchmark to make a newer products better. In 2023/2024, people will look for alternative with the similar price point and better performance. However, sound is subjective.. if you like how the blue yeti sounds then this microphone is for you.

Nice video my friend! I can't decide between this one and the Yeti X. I've read a lot of issues about the USB port on the regular yeti, and since in my country those mics are pretty expensive, I'm a bit concern about it. The Yeti X World of Warcraft Special Edition ... Big difference from a standard old model Yeti as the Yeti X is way better. The World Of Warcraft Yeti X is so friggen Awesome it will totally blow your mind and if you can not afford to get the WOW Version get the Regular Yeti X as it is still Awesome but the WOW Version will come with way more than the regular Yeti X that will make it a day and night difference, especially for endless fun and I do not play WOW and find this Special Edition a riot. I was out to buy it as just from a collectors view but had to try it and well I will get one more and leave it unopened for a collector's piece to resell someday or if something ever goes wrong with mine use it as a backup and yes its that much fun to mess around with. Whether it is the Standard Yeti X or the Special Edition WOW Yeti X, The Yeti X is a total step up bigger and better version above the Basic Older Model Yeti ;)

I picked mine up for 100 dollars and I don’t think I have too many complains for that price range considering it’s plug and play capabilities. I probably wouldn’t have paid more then that but you definitely hit the nail on the head with the need to move it off to the side. I was able to set it up decently for me rigging up a microphone stand attached to the corner of my desk coming from a decent height down. The angle allowed me to have the mic decently close to me above me where it still picked up my voice well and didn’t block my view of the monitors. I have since picked up an audio interface and started messing around with higher quality mics but yeah I can’t really be angry at it for 100 dollars. I was able to pick it up the day I decided I wanted it at Best Buy no problem and I was ready to go.

I got mine about ten years ago for $80. I don’t use it a lot anymore, but it’s a decent third mic for when I’m engineering podcasts. The talent get the “good” mics and I keep the Yeti next to the mixer for when I need to pipe in. Not everything I say in those situations goes into the podcast, but I like to record it in case what I’ve said helps continuity. And it’s fine for that. I will say I tossed the custom stand in favor of the overpriced, far too heavy, and unwieldy custom shock mount, but I’ve retired that in favor of just connecting it to a $10 table stand with a heavy base. Yes, I get a rare thump when I forget and drop my hand to the desk, but hey, that’s why we edit.

The Yeti was the first MIC I had that was not some cheep $30ish desktop MIC. I have upgraded to the Spark a couple years ago and gave my Yeti to a friend so they would not have to pay anything for a new MIC when theirs died. I very much agree with the issue of it getting in the way of your keyboard when gaming and so it would sit off to the side and I would have to up the gain, but as just a bit of an audio nerd I changed settings more then just the gain. Still at levels it could pick up my voice and be out of my way it sounded awful. So I did get a shock mount and an arm for it at one point which helped a bunch with that issue. That said I have been enjoying my spark for a few years now and it sounds so much better. I likely wont need to get a new MIC unless this one dies on me or I actually start doing something that I would need a better MIC for.

I have a very noisy house - the windows whistle in the wind etc. At first, I used this wrong - way too loud. I've had complaints about the sound quality. Now I'm trying at a really low level and it's still bad. I give up lol! It's also too heavy for me and too big. I'd just like a simple small microphone that produces reasonable sound quality and is good value. What do you recommend for this? Thanks!
