The bacteria digest the proto-swiss and is excreted as CO2, humans digest food and excrete it as methane and junk(and poo). Sounds like a similar enough process for it to be bacteria fart.

that's what i tought too. the other question is, if americans and the english, produce their own Emmentaler, which they call "swiss cheese" due to copyright reasons..... also it's funny, how english spoken people always refer to "swiss cheese" altho Switzerland has x-amount kinds of cheese, which don't really taste the same. in my english learning process earlier, i was confused, when for example the british talked about making a sandwich with swiss cheese. when i asked what kind of swiss cheese, they told me to stop snob about cheese. :'D

I don't understand why if you let milk sour you cannot drink it, it makes you sick, but if you wait long enough it turns into cheese. And why does most "swiss cheese" that you buy in a supermarket not have holes? It looks like (and tastes like) white "pasteurised process american cheese food"
@itisdevonly
@itisdevonly 10 жыл бұрын
It has entirely to do with which strains of bacteria are growing in the food. Fermentation is a process by which bacteria partially digest the food, but when fermenting, you don't just let stuff sit and rot, you first have to put in a specific bacterial culture, so that a type of bacteria that is healthy (rather than harmful) colonizes in the food (and out-competes the bad bacteria that would otherwise take hold on that food), and then you can eat that.
@Steamrick
@Steamrick 10 жыл бұрын
The bacteria that make you sick are the wrong bacteria for cheese making. The traditional method of introducing the right bacteria is using Rennet, which is taken from the stomach of a young calf. If you want to know more -> google

My first step to becoming a cheese purist was to start eating cheeses where they "came from". No more "swiss cheese" from Wisconsin factories, but rather, Emmentaler from Switzerland. No more "gouda" from Wisconsin factories, but rather, Gouda from the Netherlands. Having made the switch, all I can say is that most factory cheese is a pale imitation at best. I grew up thinking I didn't like"swiss cheese", but when I first had Emmentaler, I found it quite good. Turns out I like Swiss cheese just fine, it's bland, flavourless factory cheese I have a problem with.

dumpsky I like stonger and weirder cheeses. About the only cheese I've had that I'm willing to write off forever was gjetost, a whey cheese that I just found thoroughly off-putting. Generally, if I want to clear a room, I don't have to pull out anything super exotic, a good Stilton will do the trick. Casuals!

"I push my fingers into my eyes, it's the only thing that slowly stops the ache!" - Slipknot- Duality This is kind of a two parter. If you use this means of relieving pain behind your eyes, make sure your lids are closed and be /very/ gentle. It only takes a little pressure to do the trick.

Wait, the description says that SciShow is supposed to explain what cheese is called in Switzerland. Unless I keep unconsciously blacking out at the same point of the video, I think they might have forgotten to mention that part. In case you're also curious (but perhaps too lazy to look it up), here is what I found: It seems the Swiss refer to what Americans call "Swiss Cheese" by more specific names based on various varieties. Gruyere, Emmentaler, Appenzeller, Vacherin Fribourgois, Tilsiter, are some that I found (with the first two being the most popular).

You only answered question a. Question b is pretty funny, 'cause here in Switzerland they have a lot of different names, as there is actually a lot of different kinds of holed cheese, often with names pertaining to which valley they come from: Gruyère, Emmental, Etivaz, ... As for question c, I don't have the slightest idea. Aliens? Might as well be aliens.

this may sounds a bit crazy. but "why cheese has holes in it" - that's like basic elementary school stuff over here in switzerland :D oh yes, they grow and teach us to be proud and that no other country is better than switzerland.

Is there an absolute orthonormal reference in space? Relativity seems to indicate there isn't. However, when we say the earth and moon rotate when perceived from the sun, we could easily choose another reference point in which they don't seem to rotate yet are still not falling onto each other. So can you explain the paradox with or without an absolute reference?

b) what Swiss cheese is called in Switzerland. What you guys call Swiss cheese is called Emmental if it actually come from Switzerland, if it's made anywhere else, it's called Swiss Cheese. So basically, Swiss cheese isn't from Switzerland (well the recipe is :D )

Other strange fact : We, French, call Swiss cheese "Gruyère" , but it's not, Gruyère don't have holes. That's because French are stupid.

Guss De Blöd J'ai toujours pensé que le Gruyère avait des trous, mais je n'étais pas sûr que ce soit l'emmental qui en avait aussi :P Donc je me suis résigné a appeler le fromage à trous "fromage suisse" :)

ZombieYellow11 well they don't just look and taste different, they also come from totally different places. so take it easy if a swiss critizises you on naming theyr cheese. they are proud as hell on them. :D

ZombieYellow11 Le gruyère n'a pas de trous justement ^^ Facile à différencier! Big MD I'm French and I live in Switzerland, first time I talked about cheese with my GF (she's from switzerland) she yelled at me because I said Gruyère and Emmental are the same :D

Hank is probably on vacation because he is stressed from this work. I am sure you will make him more stressed if you talk about how you dont like this guy and will take more frequent, longer vacations. Just enjoy this guy for now. He reminds me much of hank and although might not be quite as energetic, he is still just about as good.

I just thought I'd mention that that which is usually called 'Swiss cheese' isn't actually Swiss, it's American. Emmentaler, however, is somewhat similar, with the distinctive eyes, and is actually legitimately Swiss.

On my first trip to Switzerland I went to buy cheese in a little shop. When the sales lady asked what kind of cheese I wanted, I said "Swiss." She looked perplexed and replied, "they're all Swiss!?" It's really Emmentaler and not "Swiss" cheese ;-)

Huh, I thought it was because Swiss cheese is aged, and in the aging, mold is formed. Then a chemical is added to get rid of this, leaving holes. I guess that doesn't make sense since mold needs oxygen, which you wouldn't find smack dab in the muddle of a chunk of cheese. Glad I watched this vid!
