I have been a fan of the Subaru WRX STI for more than 15 years. The biggest question I always get is, "why not save the $10,000 and get a WRX?" I am going to show you all of the differences between a Subaru WRX compared to a Subaru STi. So you can make the proper decision based off of your needs ands wants.

freEvo8 I love my WRX. got the limited trim for less than I could’ve gotten the base trim STI and honestly, it is a cornering monster. I got the car for fun weekended to the beach with my family or fun road trips. It’s not a ferrari, but I just couldn’t see paying more for a car that would never see the track.

It’s actually not pink, it’s cherry blossom. Which in itself a very traditional and Subaru STI purist color. That color was used on the original STI badges then it received an update getting a little darker around 04. Then in 2008 Subaru changed it to red because our market found their masculine color too feminine.

Front and rear LSD's, bulletproof transmission, amazing brakes, adjustable real center dif. Its much more of a sports car. And coming from 4 previous WRX's before my 19 STi, I can honestly say the STi is worth the extra money. And in my case the difference between my STi base and a WRX limited was only about 4k. Get whatever you can afford, but I've never heard an STi owner say they wish they had bought a WRX, where plenty of Rex owners wish they had the STi! And as far as the "Big Wang" goes, I hated it at first, but its what makes this car unique and has grown on me. As always great video man!

Big wang” please elaborate, I have a once in a life time to get the car of my dreams- why did the sti not have a clutch in this video or did I miss that part- I live in San Francisco and people tell me that manuals will forfeit after a long term use- I honestly don’t care but automatic will save you a headache, like I said I’m willing to go manual and learn how to go up those steep hills then to have a WRX that the turbo takes a few more sec’s to kick in and I’d have to mod in order to get that STI feel. Hey, I'm kinda old but a newbie to the Subaru WRX family. Please don't hate on me because I've read enough that I know there will be some. I recently purchased at 2016 WRX Limited CVT. I then promptly took it to a great shop here in KC called Modified by KC and had it modded to Stage 2. What a fun freaking car. I've never had a fast, sporty, performance car, ever. A car has always been a tool to get me to point A to B. Now, I get in "Tokyo" and it's fun every time!

Both cars are for two different people. You can't generalize one car over the other as the best choice for the masses. However...what I see out there is WRX owners dumping the extra money on just the motor and leaving the brakes and suspension stock, while STI owners are dropping them on bags and playing with launch control without launching. But...to each his own. That's the beauty of it.

I'd like to address this really quick because I see this comment on a lot of videos. Most of the time, when someone goes to buy a car they don't have AN EXTRA 10k AFTER they purchase a new car. They finance the extra 10k, it's not like they have it in the bank. So if they do get the WRX, it's most likely going to stay a WRX for a few months lol. On top of that each 1k in financing is around $15 dollars a month. So I'm guessing unless you're going through a car broker when you go to a stealersip an extra $150 a month for the STI isn't a bad decision. IMHO, I see a lot of over extending from owners when it comes to STI. The insurance is more. Maintenance is more (unless you maintenance it yourself). Tires are more. If you aren't going to track the car or hit the canyons... Why even get this car? 50k is a huge chunk of change. Yes you get tons of value for your buck, but do you need any of this? Buy a year old STI, save yourself 12-16k and hope for the best. It was a decent video to watch. But I only saw two things I cared about in a car like this. 1: LSD. 2: Brake package Anyone notice for another 50k car, we're still using Toyota Camry door handles? Lol

Another great Vid! Love the Subie enthusiasm, camera work and the way you approach the cars specifics like a Weatherman tracking a storm!:) I traded in a loved 14 WRX for my 19 STi. A big part of the attraction for me was not only the obvious (warrantied) performance advantages. Being a Japanese car enthusiast for many years, the STi heritage played a tremendous part in my 'upgrade'. Higher payment, more $$ for insurance, zero regrets! Keep up the good work!

I had a 2016 WRX Premium, and now a WRX STI Type RA. Bottom line: both cars are huge fun and will leave a BIG smile on your face. To me, the difference between WRX and WRX STI is very clear and has nothing (directly) to do with money. If you're going to do anything on track, then the logical choice is the WRX STI. Although, it has to be said, the regular WRX would still be fun on track (particularly if you consider yourself a track-day novice). Where the WRX equals (and according to some reviewers even beats) the WRX STI, is in everyday, regular roads, daily commute driving. If you have no intention of taking your car on track, you can save a ton of money by opting for the regular WRX and you will still have a VERY fast car where, driven properly (and safely, and within the posted speed limits) you will run out of courage before you run out of grip. One final thought about stock Vs mods. Personally, as I prefer corners to straights, I wouldn't do any serious under-the-skin mods on any car unless I was absolutely convinced that I could drive my stock car as fast on track as an instructor could ... and that's never happened! Now, cosmetic mods, that's something else - some amazing cosmetic treatments out there!

I think of it this way, if you want better acceleration, speed, handling, steering, brakes, AWD drive system, , DCCD, SI drive, interior, wing, exhaust sound (boxer rumble), transmission, gearbox, aftermarket support, lights, wheels, then get an STI. If you want better gas mileage then get a WRX.

That makes no sense. You can keep your pink STI badges, your cup holder cover, your big Wang, your fog light delete “option”, your power control switches, your slightly bigger wheels, your older than dirt 310hp engine with its.3 tenths of a second faster 0-60 time....and I’ll pocket my $10,000.00 dollars thank you very much. The price difference between these two cars is the total amount that I paid for my 2013 Focus ST3. YES, you heard me correctly. I purchased the car used in 2015 with 22,600 miles on her. Only two years old. Car was and is still mint condition. I am meticulous about my cars (all three of them) including my almost 33 year old Mustang GT which I purchased new in 1986! I did trade in a beautiful 2006 Acura TL 6 speed manual murdered out in all black with 158K on her. I purchased that brand new in 2006. I loved that car but it was time for a clutch, front struts, rear shocks.....blah, blah, blah...I didn’t want another project car so I traded her in on the ST3. FIRST used car I ever purchased! I got four new 18” Continental tires and a one year bump to bump warranty. Now my ST has 71K trouble free miles on her and my “gamble” looks like it’s paying off big time. For me this is a no brainer: WRX Hands Down winner. 10K more for an STI... Get the *** outta here with that noise. 🤑💰👀😳

Honestly, I guess on paper, the performance on both vehicles are very similar which causes some of these debates. All it took for me was a test drive and I was immediately in love with the STI. The WRX is a great car, there is no doubt about it. But when I test drove it, the steering feel is isolated and very loose, thank to its electronic steering. As for the STi, it uses hydraulic steering rack which allows the drivers to feel more connected. Bear in mind, i didn't know of the steering rack differences yet I was still able to tell the difference. This shows how different both cars handle. I was smiling when I test drove the WRX, however, I was giggling like a fat kid with candy when I test drove the STi. The handling is truly amazing. I love it. The pure happiness from driving the STi, was well worths that extra $10,000 dollars in my opinion.

People forget the brembos, recaro seats, steering rack, better drivetrain, suspension, and a entire list of parts that are just better. Both cars are good and have their merits. In the end I wouldn't get any of these new ones if your in the market, I'd wait till 2020. Rumor has it Subaru isn't giving the STI the new FA engine but rather improving on the old EJ 257 motor with stronger internals and bigger turbo. The new S209 is basically Subaru testing the new upgrades on the old EJ motor which I'm excited about.

Me too! Everybody complains about the EJ257, but ive had no problems... I keep it stock use 93 octane and keep my oil changed and topped up. I would love to buy a Subaru with an engine done up from the factory. Ive had issues with "performance shops" in the past on previous cars and now prefer to just buy a car done up already.

I deliberated this for a while, wrx vs STI and I am still glad I got the wrx. I do not like the EJ engine at all - horrible fuel economy, big turbo lag, unreliable due to thin cylinder walls and full floating cylinders and timing belt (vs chain). STI's make no sense to me because I can get a V-8 car with 100 more hp and torque and MUCH better fuel economy than the STI.

I bought my wrx in 2012. Back then it was actually slightly quicker to 60 and just as fast as the sti. Both even made very similar hp at the wheels. But the wrx has more compression and taller gearing for better fuel economy. Plus much more compliant suspension. I don’t race or drive at excessive speeds. I’ve also owned a 2006 sti before. The gas mileage, insurance, and less financing charges greatly favor the wrx. The sti is cool, but gets old after a while. I started to resent the high price for things I didn’t need. So, unless Subaru greatly differentiates the sti, like they use to (80+hp, better looks), I don’t see the value. Maybe a 400hp sti and 300hp wrx (many argue that the GR ej255 vf52 wrx has 300hp stock and is underrated at 265hp) would swing me toward the $10k option.

15 STI owner and Subaru enthusiast, Got her Used @2yrs old and began modding the next day. Currently Full bolts ons ,exhaust brakes/tires and some suspension. Ive played with some Wrx's and the STI is much more dialed in. Stock from a dig the WRX is a split second quicker because of FA direct port, and twin scroll. The tiny turbo tends to run out of puff. And I don't think the 2L does very well with the weight of the VA platform. That said the community needs people to buy the boring ones :P. There's no secrets to the STI everything's tried-and-true simply Follow the yellow brick road to power and performance. Without a doubt the Subarus have the most aftermarket support of any 4-cylinder platform currently in production. An STI with a quick tune , a downpipe and mybe a swaybar will hold it's own . As far the WRX ,Clearly there are those who rather be Scene then live on The Cutting Edge of performance. And it's fine by me and of Subaru of America.

Someone needs to test the 2019 sti piston materials and it's impact value and do the same with a 2018 or 2017 sti pistons and compare the two values and material to see if the 2019 sti pistons really are "stronger" as Subaru claims... which baffles me because the main issue with the sti internals are the rings, not the pistons, the pistons fail as a result of the rings failing, they should have addressed the rings too not just the pistons lol. Good job Subaru 👍 way to address only half the problem lol.

Because of watching these reviews I made decision to wait for refresh update. Subaru WRX’s are cars about the drive experience and I just decided I wanted all the experience lol I left the dealership and they called me willing to go to numbers I wanted still turned it down to wait but lesson is don’t be afraid to say what you want no matter how they act. The reason it's no longer an available option is that it is the standard exhaust on the 2019 STi, the '18 and '19 look the same, but the '19 now gets the RA drivetrain, which is 5 extra hp to 310, higher flowing intake, performance exhaust, stronger pistons and a more aggressive 3rd gear ratio (which lets you utilize more low end torque) ...... unfortunately it doesn't get the suspension upgrades the RA has though.

I had two 2005 STIs. The main reason for an STI over a WRX for me was the larger, heavier torque rated 6 speed manual, DCCD, larger LSDs front and rear, better axles, better hub bearings, better suspension, bigger brakes, stiffer body, and the slightly better engine/turbo/intercooler at the time. In an STI, you can side step the clutch at a drag strip or on the road to launch the car without much worry. The split case transmission in the WRX generally doesn't last very long with launching. At the end of the day, the WRX is a better daily driver for the money, even more so with the new 2.0L DI motor. I'm considering buying a 2019 STI all the same. :D

You buy the wrx because it's cheaper or because you can't afford the sti, same reason people buy smaller engine camaros, mustangs, challengers. They know not everyone can afford the "ideal" drivetrain so they make a cheaper option. people buy what they can afford (hopefully)

"....are they rowing a boat?...." regarding the shifter.....had me literally laugh out loud. You know, watching this doesn't help me with deciding on if I want a 2019 STI or keep my 2013 WRX :(

Hey Jimmy! I am glad that you picked up on my jokes! I can totally understand where you are coming from. Don't ever drive an STI or it's over for your WRX! Thanks for watching!

I had a 2015 WRX and in OCT 17 I upgraded it to a 2018 STI. My only regrets are not having tested the STI in 2015. The great experience does not necessarily imply a great difference in numbers. I thought that I was extremely smart when I traded my GTI in for the WRX. I thought: "it has way better gas mileage, a more modern engine, it's more affordable, etc." Plus, compared to the GTI when you start it, it sounds like a true machine. Then... you go to a Boxerfest and you feel that your car sounds like a Camry. I thought of buying and another WRX, an old one just for the rumble, but then I thought well... It looks like Subaru is abandoning the competitive advantage they have with the rumbling sound and the linearity of the EJ engine and before it's too late, I wanted my rumbling engine instead of waiting for another twin scroll one. In the 2019 STI you get several of the important mods that the Type RA introduced, the interior looks way better, the six-piston Brembos are a delight and how can you be sure that the next gen is not going to have issues, that is going to be as fun as the current STI is, plus all that for less than $ 35,000 or so? Currently, the STI is a great deal if you enjoy driving your car and not just being silently transported or so to say when passion speaks louder than the numbers / invasive electronic & plastic feeling. In several years it might be the norm that the cars are going to be more and more electric. More torque, more fuel efficient, but you are going to miss these STIs like hell. It happened to the 911s where the new ones might have great numbers, but if you could buy any, maybe you'll stick to a one from the '90s. Imagine that you could still buy an air-cooled new 911. Even Subaru is discarding the rumble as a minor thing. My wife asked me the other days: which would be an upgrade to my STI and I said a manual Porsche 911. To me, not the numb Type-R, not the RS which nor even Ford thought it was worth keeping and probably not even the next-gen STI if it sounds like the Japanese current version.

WRX>STI...why?? 1) 0-100 km/hr almost same time. 2) CVT option available 3) Full fuel tank WRX range- 550-600 kms, STI Range-450-500 kms, 4) Newer engine very efficient Turbo kicks in at lower RPS than STI 5) Cheaper on insurance 6) Exterior/interior is same except for STI badge lol 7) Fastest speed limit is 100 km/hr so WRX is more than enough for Canadian roads 8) We all know 10k Price difference....there are many more reasons.

Id take it you've never felt the shitty top end of a wrx compared to an sti or the triple lsd setup paired with si drive The hydrologic steering as opposed to electrical which in the case of the wrx is nothing compared to the sti. Bmw claims they can make electronic steering as good, not subaru. The direct shifter link to the transmission, no flimsy cable. Plenty of other reason including the all glorious ej rumble which the wrx sadly will never have again. I think you don't get the sti in that regard. If youre looking for fuel range, low end power, and a cvt gearbox, the stis not that car for you. The sti is a better drivers car in every regard. Youre looking for a highway beater.

I absolutely love it. It's actually my first stick shift but i'm getting the hang of it for the most part . I drove it home 200 miles from the dealership so that was an experience haha. But It's definitely a step up from my 94 accord :P

Mowhawk32 : Nice choice! You will l never go back to an automatic again or at least I hope you won’t. Who cares that the 10 speed automatic Mustang GT is faster than the 6 speed manual? Give me the manual 10/10 times. I like to DRIVE my cars not just sit there as a bystander. Save The Manuals!!!
