This weird keyboard looking controller is made specifically for rhythm games? For Nintendo Switch?? This is the Gamo2 K28. It looks a lot more confusing than it is, but I still don't know who it's for...???

Pretty much because he had to really TRY to go around the game and console BOTH that this thing was made for and then go "why is this made?" like, you just looked at the two things, and dismissed them for lulz and go around asking for answers you dismissed. Bob has made me slightly irritated in past but this video is just 100% irritating. The product page you can find for this thing does not exactly explain it but the game this thing is for is said BEFORE you get to the Muse Dash portion of the manual. Just two google searches from text "djmax" or "respect" after seeing the manual should have started opening up the answers this content creator is more than happy replacing with nice looking production value than actual cursory research for questions he imposes himself. And to think I have a friend who doesn't have one of these for his PC/PS4 because of restock issues for the thing so people like last person who should ever get this can own one and make most unneeded youtube video out of.

However physical materials have a cost. If you or me try to buy a full 104 (American) keyboard worth of Cherry MX switches, that will cost us $104. And if we want to buy 28? $28. They're $1 each. Do you see how the number of switches makes an _obscene_ difference in cost?

This is actually a pretty good beginner's controller for rhythm gamers! You noted that on the Gamo2 website that there are lots of game specific controllers, however I don't think you really noticed the prices. The K-28 is by far one of the cheaper rhythm game controllers on the market, and it allows for use between multiple games. Yeah, rhythm gamers usually have that one game we absolutely love, but who doesn't want to take a break from Bemani style games every now and then to play Groove Coaster or something else for a week? More than likely, the game specific controller wouldn't work well with another game. A Sound Voltex controller works well with 4b and 6b games, but if you wanted to play 8b, Pop'n Music, Beatmania, Groove Coaster, Project Diva, etc. you're out of luck. I think that if you are interested in rhythm gaming, but don't feel comfortable in dropping your money into an expensive game specific controller, or an expensive multi-game controller, like the EZMAX controller I personally use, then this is a nice middle ground.

Having a keyboard is super useful for Muse Dash because higher difficulties require you to really drum the buttons a lot. Sure, there's only two inputs required but you'll want multiple buttons for each when they start throwing absurd lines of notes at you.

You are entirely correct. I'm one of those Fighting Game people and this controller was perfect for me. Having grown up playing emulator games on computer, I got so used to using directional buttons using my right hand (i.e. arrow keys) instead of my left which is the norm. Most Hitbox and Mixbox configurations have it set so the direction keys are done by the left hand and in order for me to compete in locals, I have to use a keyboard + converter + my own configuration so that I can use the arrow keys. This controller bypasses all that since I can just use its custom layout then it's plug and play for any ps4/switch and it's perfect.

you're right to say that rhythm gamers do want very specific controllers for the games they play but most of us play a whole bunch of games me personally I play 8 different games consistently, with the prices of arcade style controllers for rhythm games being around $300-$800 usually depending on the game buying 8 controllers is a hard sell and they take up a lot of room so having one controller that is super versatile even though it isn't perfect is a much better option for a lot of people.

You finally sold me on a Keyboard controller, Bob. Had never considered the application for rhythm games but now I want this: Basically the appeal here, especially with games like Taiko & Muse Dash that utilize only a couple buttons, is that having multiple keys for the input is HUGE for faster sections & higher difficulties, allowing multiple presses much faster than mashing a single button. I want it, but wonder if I could rig a cheaper solution to do the same thing.

The reds and browns will sound similar just so people know. Blue is the ones with click. Red and brown make noise from the key bottoming out and the up stroke. Blue makes noise at bottom out and upstroke as well with the addition of a click bar/jacket that makes a high pitched click. Browns just have a tactile bump that you can feel in the keystroke to avoid accidental keypress and no click bar to be more silent than blues. Reds are just up and down with no tactile bump or click bar ( easy to press by mistake).

Ground loop noise isolators fix the static that comes through the switch headphone jack when docked. Maybe worth a video? It saved me from buying yet another external dac, which is really hard for the switch since very few are compatible.

there is a good reason why people would prefer this on PC rhythm game over standard keyboard: the layout for example, if you play DJMAX Respect where you need 8 buttons laid out in a fashion you won't mispress, standard keyboard isn't really a good option (worse if you have TKL or compact one like 75% or 60%), Gamo2 mitigates the issue by having only the necessary buttons on the keyboard, reducing the issue in pressing the wrong buttons but that will mostly depends from person to person as I know some can do just fine with standard full-layout keyboard, I personally prefer Gamo2 to prevent me from pressing wrong buttons and the reason why it's also advertised for Osu is the Osu!Mania mode where it plays pretty much like O2jam / DJMAX, it makes no sense to use the board in standard EBA / Ouendan as it doesn't need anything more than two keys.

I gotta say I have this keyboard (and coincidentally reviewed this a while ago) and I love this thing. It's so cute and stylish. Yeah this keyboard doesn't have hot-swappable switches because switches are soldered onto the PCB. If you wanted to swap switches you could disassemble it and desolder the switches. Not recommended and would probably void your warranty. And yeah you can use a keyboard instead of a K28 on PC but I feel the ortholinear layout is better suited to rhythm games than... well your standard layout keyboards. And yeah, you could get a keyboard but most keyboards don't emulate Nintendo Switch or PS3/PS4 controls. It sounds like I'm just an apologist for this thing but I really do enjoy using it. And this is someone who's used a variety of keyboards, controllers, and alternative control methods as well.

I have a Gamo 2 with Reds and have been using it for a few years it's hands down the best keyboard controller for switch imho because the large spaced icons it helps with Rhythm games Taiko, Voez, Deemo and Project Diva the best for it Muse Dash has some rhythm syncing issue with it's controls the inputs in some of the songs don't really follow the rhythm of the song on switch. It played better on steam. You can use it with many other games other than what is supported and it's amazing for Tetris 99. You have such a huge advantage using it to play Tetris. I use it a lot with Megaman Anniversary and Street Fighter 30th as well. You can move the smaller space bars to other locations too which makes it SO much better to have the larger buttons for things like combos etc.

It's a bit of work to set up for sure but does work really well once it's set up. I prefer mostly Project Diva and Tetris with this and I love playing with it. I'm a fighting game player mostly though and whilst it does work and is ok to play on a fightstick or hitbox style is so much better for fighting games. I think its not marketed towards fighting games cause sticks are the superior product for the same price or less. Quarter, half, and full circle inputs may end up getting dropped due to how close all of the keys are. Might accidentally graze unintentional inputs on the way. As always, great video!

Two agreed-upon features that a fighting game controller MUST have is that the "up" input takes priority over the "down" one, instead the "left" and "right" cancel against each other. This is to prevent left+right blocking and down-charging while walking, among other things. If this is not possible on this device, then a fighting game enthusiast could use it at home, but he or she would have an unfair advantage and wouldn't be able to bring it to a tournament.

For me, this controller is a great compact Hitbox style controller that I can also use for PC shortcuts. While there are other Hitboxes on the market (I even made my own out of solid walnut), and other compact solutions like the Snackbox Micro, this offers a degree of customization, portability, and sturdiness that can't be found in other Hitboxes. I wanted something small that I could bring to tournaments while also having SOCD cleaning and native support to be tournament legal, but I can also customize the keys and dampen the sound. I live in a loft with 30ft ceilings and even silent Sanaa buttons are LOUD and echo. These plus dampeners let me play quietly while still meeting my other requirements. It also just looks dope and I'll probably snag an artisan cap or two for fun. For me it's like if you're a keeb weeb AND a fighting game player who doesn't always play on stick, this is a meat product. Would I recommend it? Hell no lol but it's cool none the less

I wonder if this would be good for Amplitude since you mention it's intended for rhythm games. I've been considering controllers a lot since your custom keyboard controller video

Gotta agree that the lack of proper visuals for keys is highly confusing. I wish they gave you stickers with it. Thanks for reviewing this :)

I have this controller and use it for pretty much everything, I play fighting games and it plays fighting games fine as a hitbox or mixbox although I have a full sized hitbox if I am playing serious. I mainly use it for music games obviously, DJMax especially and I have every single music game on the switch and ps4 so gets a lot of use on taiko, miku, groovecoaster. I got my moneys worth for it, I even rebinded it for jRPG on the switch

This controller was mainly made for DJMAX games and as a fan I'm tempted to buy it. I don't really play on my ps4 anymore and moved to my gaming laptop. I don't type and mainly play games using a dualshock4 so I never needed an external keyboard. A small portable mini-keyboard with mirrored sides like this just to play rhythm games seems like a perfect fit for me. I do have the drum controller for Taiko but on Hard and Oni difficulty songs I'm kinda annoyed that you barely have any time to lift the sticks to hit again, while on a keyboard like this your fingers are already on the 4 buttons you need to press, so it feels more comfortable and I score much better. Of course i could just buy an external gaming keyboard but even the smallest one is still too big for my table. Having an option is always good.

Map both the "space bars" as "Up" and it'll be kinda like a hitbox!

Rhythm games like djmax, Acraea, and other 4k-7k style games take lots of buttons. if you're playing stuff like musedash those are what the bigger buttons are intended for. (Also linears are very good for gaming cause they actuate better but clicky make my brain happy)

This controller is best used for games like DJMax Respect and Musynx. Try those with this controller and then you'll understand why this exists.

Didn't expect Wulff Den to review this keyboard in particular. I've seen some other K28 reviews before and apparently there's some high inconsistency with the polling rates in certain builds, some being 125hz and some being 66hz (my model in particular comes at a 100hz), I'm not knowledged in keyboard stuff like this so apologies if I'm wrong

I am more than happy with the regular Switch joycons, have zero need or interest in something like this, but this was still a very interesting video! Nice job, Bob! :D

Didn't think i'd see you review ANYTHING from gamo2. This is a surprise. They are doing the rhythm game world a huge favor with their controllers.

Key Mander? Never heard of that, but will need to check it out. As for this keyboard, I like the sound of the flexibility. Does it have macro support?
You'll never wanna use a regular controller button again.
