A few months ago, another KZfaqr posted on his Instagram story that he had quit drinking alcohol, and noticed that his resting heart rate decreased. Around the same time, he started exercising more consistently, which caused his heart rate to drop further. Both not-drinking and exercise can cause HR to drop, but through different mechanisms. Let's get into it!

I am 42 years old. The last few times I have drank (let's say 4 shots of whiskey) + 3 beers. I wake up in the middle of the night and my heart is pumping super hard. It takes a few hours for my heart rate to go back down. So, I have decided to stop drinking. I still have lots of things I want to accomplish in my life and I don't want Alcohol to get in the way of that.

Same. I had no idea. I am fitness-conscious. I have been training and wearing a fitbit. I just thought my RH was naturally higher. I dropped from 75 to 62 in 9 days not drinking daily 2 glasses of wine. Now sticking with the abstinence, and upping my cardio, see if I can get into the 50s. Am 43. Fit. Strong. A whole life to lead.

I definetely have an increased heart rate after drinking yes. Bad sleep quality, bad memory and fatige the next day. Sometimes my resting heart rate which is around 50 bpm, shoots up to 70 or more and the pulse volume increases too. I feel miserable, depressed, anxious and overall sh.t. I quit drinking altogether.

This is so important! I noticed the same thing stopping my alcohol consumption. I was sort of forced to quit drinking after realizing taking Kratom was really messing with me. Anyone that’s quit Kratom knows the anxiety that comes with quitting is unbearable and alcohol only makes it worse. I’m 29 and I watched my resting rate go from 85-90 to 56-69.

I definitely always noticed an increase in heart rate when drinking. I’m usually 70-80 normal and can get to 90-100 after several drinks. But I also have chronic anxiety so idk what my real level is sometimes 😅 I’m going to start heavy cardio soon to try and bring my normal down to the 50s-60s and see how I am.

I gave up drinking about 11 years ago and started running about 7 years ago. Just bought a smart watch this last Christmas and have been nerding out on the data. My resting BPM is around 53-56 average. Not bad for a 48 year old. I wish I slept better, since I only get about 5-6 hours per night. I blame that on video games. Perhaps they should do a study on the impact of gaming and sleep quality? Not that I would ever quit gaming for health reasons. Better to die with a controller in my hands! Thanks for the info and keep up the great work, Mr. Kelly!

Having all that data on hand is the best, even if it's not 100% accurate. As far as video games, it's like what they say, "find something you love and let it kill you". That's how I feel about ice cream. Tell your family I say hello!

check, how you feel after applying a blue light filter and reducing brightness on your monitor. The blue light emitted by the LED's is, what's closest to sunlight and that might screw your biorhythm in effect. Blue light filter and less brightness might make a screen look less exciting, but after all you want to get less excited in order to fall asleep after that :) (they claim that blue light is also responsible for zombie-scrolling ... mindlessly scrolling down i.e. facebook timeline in the unsubstantiated hope to find at one point something that's relevant) Modern monitors have by the way a built-in functionality to reduce brightness and blue light based on current time and/or daylight in the room. You might want to check that as well, if you don't want to constantly reduce brightness and amount of blue light. Don't get zombified by your screen ;) Have a good sleep! :)

I know better, but I just choose to "play another 10 minutes" X 10, because this character ain't gonna level up by himself! Also, this problem goes waaay back to PONG days, and we didn't have blue lights when games were black and white. It's just a problem with the gamer being old and stuck in his ways. :)

@jandl1jph766
@jandl1jph766 3 жыл бұрын
This essentially confirms something I'd already noticed but never really researched myself - if I'm very tired or stressed, even a small amount of alcohol can push my resting heart rate absolutely through the roof (in one particularly memorable case to over 110bpm!), while it normally is well below 40bpm (endurance athlete with a naturally low RHR). On the other hand, if I'm reasonably relaxed and not overly tired, a drink in the evening does almost nothing beyond somewhat decreasing heart rate variability and prolonging recovery by a bit. I guess I'm going to have to look into this a bit more, this is way too interesting to ignore...

Folks, I am a habitual drinker, red wine with dinner every day. I went on a health-kick cleanse... my RH went from 75, dropping by two each day for first week, one after that... today, 9 days in, RH is 62. Feel great. I had no idea that change would be so stark. Red wine thins the blood. Two glasses a day are supposed to be healthy. But the trade off for me appears very large.

My heart rate absolutely skyrockets when I drink. I am half-Vietnamese (half European) and I have Asian flush, which I think plays a role in why my heart reacts so much. The more alcohol I drink, the more elevated my heart rate becomes. Perhaps you could do a video on why some people have a high resting heart rate when consuming alcohol while others don't, and how Asian flush might explain why many people experience an elevated heart rate.

Alcohol thins the blood which lowers oxygen level. It's like diluting paint with water or thinner. If you ever saw an intoxicated person bleed you can physically see it. The heart speeds up to provide needed red blood cells for oxygen. That confirms what you are saying. You gave the technical explanation.

The reason I’m watching this vid is because in recent years I find that if I have 5+ drinks, I am awake every hour in the night with my heart racing so fast.. feels like 90bpm or more and the only thing that slows it back down is chugging water. So I end up having 1-2L of water throughout the night. Then in the morning it goes back to normal. I honestly feel like I’m gonna have a heart attack one of these days so I want to quit drinking. And my RHR is 64 today even though I'm chronically stressed, drank three servings of coffee today, don't sleep well, drink a glass of alcohol a few times a week, and haven't been exercising hardly at all so far this year. When I manage to consistently run a few times a week even at low volumes it'll drop into the 40s with a few days even getting as low as 34. When I go to bed a few hours after dinner, my resting heart rate is in the mid 60’s and I also feel like my heart is pounding harder. By morning everything returns to normal, but the pounding sometimes concerns me and makes it a little harder to fall asleep. I really enjoy my wine with dinner, but I wish there was something I could do to prevent the pounding heartbeat that keeps me awake?

I’m 41 now and for the last probably 1 year, after only 1 drink(it can be anything, beer, whiskey…) my blood pressure goes down and it’s like 100/45 I feel like my heart will jump out of my chest, I can take it better if I drink over the day, but If I drink at night, super fast heart rate would wake me up on the middle of the night and it takes 2-4 hours to get past. I am really concerned, I scheduled Cardiologist doctor visit.

Just seeing this video have a family member taking medication for fluid and heart failure and chest pain one for blood clots and a couple more medication was told they can drink in moderation so they drink like 3 times a week like 3to 4 cups of wine at one time or some times just 48 ounce of beer is that ok

If I drink only 1 large class of wine, I don't really feel the affects too much. 2 glasses a bit more yes. If I keep up wine drinking for several hours but limit to say 1 glass per 1-2 hrs, I feel hotter, unease in sleep, and I sometimes dizzy spells. I have normally ectopic beats. Docs can't tell me why. But I do have issues with random axiety, what people would probably call panic attacks, where my heart will start racing for no apparent reason. Sometimes I know why. But I also know when my heart races about 110 for a while, it drops suddenly to 10-20 for a few min, causing me to black out, and it feels I am literally dying. This happens most of the time when I have a panic attack, and when it is triggering a mental thing, not alcohol, like when I watch a grusome movie, or someone tells me about their medical procedure, seeing a lot of blood, or I am in a fair amount of pain. Other heart racings I can't explain, it just comes over me at random times.

Have pretty much quit drinking (i'll drink maybe once every couple months now) because in the past year and a half when I have more then maybe 3 drinks it'll cause me to awake in the middle of the night with a fast, heavy heart rate and palpitations. My anxiety will also be wayyy more intensified the next day and just doesn't feel worth it. My resting rate has gone down into the 60's which actually makes me nervous since I definitely have an anxiety issue but doctors have checked me multiple times and said my heart is fine and that's a normal, healthy rate.

I stopped drinking because after even a couple drinks after having not drank for even 6-8 weeks at a time, my resting heart rate is in the 120s. While without drinking it averages in the 50s. Also I have exclusively been doing resistance training now for about 2 1/2 years and over that time my resting heart rate has gone from the 80s down the to 50s. pretty much no aerobic exercise.
