Have you ever written something you think is pretty good, and then the next day you hate it? In this week's Ramblevlog I talk a little bit about that. I also talk about beginnings, middles and ends when writing fiction, and there's a Ben' Question of the Week. Enjoy!

I love the endings, I don’t know, it just gives the film closure and satisfying to know what happens to the characters. I would love to write a novel that is 90 % dialogue. Dialogue is my strong suit.

I love a good ending. Especially bittersweet ones, where some things are left to the imagination. I would definitely read a novel that was 90% dialogue!

I love writing the beginning and the end, struggle with the middle but sometimes it can be fun!

Middles can be a nightmare, can't they? Trying to keep everything interesting, trying to keep the conflict flowing from one scene to the next. At least beginnings and ends are landmarks. The middle can just be a big void if we're not careful!

Great video, Ben! I usually like writing the beginning of stories best: I get to set the scene and hook the reader with the world, concept or question. And I’m hooking and exciting myself, too!

Thanks Ephiny! I love to read beginnings but I think I'm bad at writing them. There's so much you need to achieve, establishing a time and place and character, etc. But I do also find them really fun to write.

Great video, Ben! I hope your little girl had a great birthday. Your theory about rereading your writing and not liking it makes a lot of sense. To answer the QotW, I am going with the middle. By middle I mean everything between the beginning and the end. There's a lot more leeway in the middle and I like to start there, too. Thanks for answering my question! Your description-writing is amazing and I would read that boring book if you ever wrote it. I hope you aren't getting discouraged about your channel. It's very hiqh-quality content and I look forward to lots more of it!!

Thanks Doreen! I love writing middles too. There's definitely a lot of room to go off-track, but I enjoy weaving the narrative from beginning to end. And thank you for being so kind about my writing and my channel. I'm all good. Just a little fatigued, but I can't complain. It's a great little community here in this comments section, and I'm enjoying the writing too.

This is an opening to one of my stories. As the light faded so did the high-pitched voice, all the kid could make out was the last word spoken to him, it was 'fly'. It was important, but he did not know why. Then nothing but darkness, as it pulled at him, he was falling slowly as if sinking. The silent void began to fill with what sounded like wooden chimes whistling. He no longer felt as if he was falling but a weird sensation came over him as if drops of water were hitting his head. Broken images filled his mind, bright colours, faces, wings, and a bright blue sky. Throughout what he saw, he could hear the faint sound of a ticking clock.

Yo I literally have this all the time! When I was writing 3 months ago I thought what I was writing was soo good. But looking back on it 3 months later I can see how terrible it was. Hope your daughter had a good birthday too! 😁 ps. Snape video is finally done!

Well, I'm glad you did end up uploading. Always love the ramblevlogs. Hopefully the channel picks up. Yeah, I think I get your theory. I definitely notice it too with my own writing. Especially after flipping through some published work, then contrasting it with my own. Which can be good or bad. As for your question, probably the beginning or middle. I really struggled with the climax of my first book, but perhaps that'll change the second time around.

Thanks Kyle, I love doing the Ramblevlogs too, so it didn't feel like a chore in the end. Climaxes can be so difficult to write! There's so much that needs to come together, and a lot of pressure to really "wow" the audience. It's something I need to work more on too.

Great video. It's funny you talked about pausing the videos. For some of my favorite TV shows, I used to literally get out a stop watch timer and I would time scenes to get a sense of how long the writers/directors were focusing on certain things and how they were putting the scenes together. I like to think it gave me a good sense of pacing. For the QotW: I love to write titles, especially when I can have some fun wordplay in there.

I think we might be story-nerds Jeremy! One day I'll come visit you in Texas and we can break down scenes of our favourite films and TV shows. Titles are really fun to create - I really think they help establish a tone straight away.

Probably the beginning as that is the part to draw the reader in.
