Teflon was in the spacesuits the Apollo crew wore for the moon landing, in pipes and valves used in the Manhattan project, and it may be in your kitchen, as the nonstick coating on frying pans and cookie sheets. So what is this slippery solid - and why doesn’t anything stick to it? Ashwini Bharathula describes the science behind Teflon.
Lesson by Ashwini Bharathula, animation by Andrew Foerster.

Tyler McDaniel imagine watching a ted talk and thinking you’re an expert. Teflon has no adverse long term affects and this video was very misleading with how hot you need to get the Teflon pan before it begins breaking down. A few people have managed to heat their pans hot enough that the Teflon pans release fumes, this condition is called polymer fume fever and there’s been maybe 3 cases in recorded history of people getting it from Teflon pans and even then it has identical symptoms to a common cold. Teflon can only cause adverse reactions when inhaled so even if you get some on your food it is completely non toxic. I am a chemical engineer who has done countless hours of research on Teflon and if you think Teflon is bad I hope you don’t eat anything wrapped in plastic because that is way worse for you

To be accurate, it only provide one evidence in favor of your theory. To truly get a generalized result. you have to sample fairly from all the "great things" (sliced bread, teflon, velcro, ...); then classify them into 2 classes of whether they were born by accident; then see the proportion of the classes.

*The issue is that Teflon might start emitting poisons much earlier than you think,* especially due to local overheating like in case of frying eggs you see in the video. The eggs are not really going around the pan all the time, they occupy certain area. Thus other areas of the pan get overheated.

The "proprietary" primer layer is just unsaturated hydrocarbons which they get by stripping Teflon using ions under high vacuum or a reducing agent. They will also bake it at high temperatures, to give an extra mechanical bind. There are two coats of this and some DuPont marketers will refer to it as the mid-coat but it's just another spray of the same stuff. The top layer is Teflon stripped in a more controlled manner on one side so that they stick to the primer.

I worked in the factory that made PTFE as solid white plastic, they used it to make pumps and medical devices they own the patent for that particular type of PTFE and have been manufacturing things out of it since the 1930s in England. You had to wash your hands before you went out for a cigarette otherwise it would release fumes in your lungs and you would be ill for days.

I'm sure they're quite safe when the pan is brand new. My big worry is the millions of super old pans that people don't bother to replace when they wear out. You get huge flakes of chemical-infused heat-resistant plastic flaking into tiny bits and ending up in your food... I don't know for a fact it's dangerous, but man does it ever freak me out when I see someone cooking in one of those.

if oyu read 10 words in 0.5 sec you understood nothing of what you just read. average reading speed is about 3 - 10 words per -minute- second (I should really wake up for commenting). higher than that and your brain is too slow to work with the input.

My wife left a Teflon pan on a burner once. It started spontaneously producing a white cloud that not only set off my apartment complex's fire alarm, it damn near put me to the ground before i got the spewing skillet out the balcony door. I have never in my life inhaled something so clearly hazardous. It took two months before i didn't taste it in my mouth when i coughed.
