Tottenham Hotspur are the ninth most valuable football team in the world and have the eighth highest revenue, above the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, and Juventus, yet they haven't won a league title in 63 years, a continental crown in 40 years, or any trophy whatsoever in over fifteen years.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at Tottenham's history of failure, why Spurs have gone so long without winning anything, and whether their fortunes when it comes to winning trophies is likely to change anytime soon.

The most baffling decision to this day was sacking Mourinho days before the League Cup final. They basically sacrificed an opportunity to end their trophy drought for stupid reasons. They should of waited until after the final to decide Mourinho fate, had they lost, then sack him, had they won, keep him around for a few more months at least to see if there is an improvement in League form off the back of the Trophy win. What they did was one of the worst choices they could of made.

I was talking to a Wigan fan the other day (myself a Pompey fan) and we both agreed that we wouldn't swap our respective FA Cup wins and subsequent relegations for remaining in the top flight. Pompey and Wigan both went into administration recently, I wonder if at that time you had asked the same question you would have got the same response. It was by no means certain that either club would exist, although being fairly well supported concerns, it was of course likely that someone would come in with a rescue bid after ditching the vast majority of the debt. I wonder if those creditors too would have swapped those FA cup successes for their money back? Very easy with the benefit of hindsight to hark back to better times, safe in the knowledge that administration would end up being a mere inconvenience.

I actually admire their ability to get to the stage where they are now very organically. Spurs - much like Liverpool in some respects, and Everton too - had the worst sense of timing when it came to the dawning of the Premier League era. If the Premier League had begun in the 1980s, the notion of 'The Big Five/Six' would be more recognised for the fluid idea that it always was. Instead of Man Utd and Chelsea, you'd have had Everton and Forest. Tottenham also had a poor sense of timing in regards to their renaissance in that it happened just as Man City were being super-charged financially. All clubs found it hard enough to compete during the 'Sky Four' era, Man City joining and quickly surpassing that group just made it all the more difficult. Under the 'bad luck' ledger, I think 2016-17 stands out. A points tally of 86 would have covered the vast majority of 1990s Premier League winning teams - for instance, Mad Utd won the title in 1997 with 75 points and a G/D of nearly half Spurs' effort in 2016/17. And they didn't just win the league that year, they won it by a clear seven points ahead of Newcastle. Arsenal won the league the following season with 78 points, Utd won it in their treble year with 79 points. Becoming English champions is more difficult now than it has ever been, Leicester City's miracle notwithstanding. Part of Spurs' fans gripes with ownership is that they didn't capitalise on momentum at the time and finance a couple of signings when Poch had the team purring. The stadium move, while ultimately beneficial, probably happened at the worst possible time too in a football sense - again, that poor sense of timing. The 2019 CL Final was also one of those days when you knew that it wasn't in the stars. Having a marginal penalty awarded against you in the opening minutes of the game really sucks the air out of the occasion.

It makes no sense to me that when Man City, 🎉the richest club in the world, put their tickets up 5% this week ,nobody even said a word about it. But Spurs put up their tickets for the first time in 5 years and everyone loses their shit. Not that agree with the horrific high ticket prices,I don't. As you said many clubs in the PL have long trophy droughts, but generally they deflect that fact by mocking Spurs. Not that we should be happy that we've lost so many finals and semi finals, but they were mostly lost to better teams with higher wage bills and more transfer spending. Now there is a chance to break that cycle with the young exciting players at the club, with top talents like Bergvall and Vulsovic to still arrive. Hopefully Levy and the board stick the landing by finishing the squad with some top class additions next summer.

It's also important to remember that Spurs fought near bankruptcy for most of the '90s, right after the Premier League was formed. This set the club back a great deal and it took up to the mid noughties to put the club back to a safe financial footing.

Kat Lucas, a Spurs journalist, made a good point on the podcast Football Travel by Outside Write in that you have to compare Spurs with teams like Aston Villa and Everton instead of Chelsea and Manchester City on terms of lesser revenue and historical significance. As an American Spurs fan, I think it's better to support a team that can match its football results with its financial revenue; you might win the league one season and get relegated the other (look at Leicester). Appreciate the insightful video Alfie. P.S. It'll certainly be nice to see Ange becoming the first Spurs manager to spend a full season in the Spurs dugout since Pochettino in 18/19.

In the modern era only Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United ever win trophies. There's been odd exceptions such as Leicester, Swansea and Wigan. But those teams dominate finals and trophies. Has to be down to mentality, they got rid of Mourinho just before the league cup final which says it all. I would also argue lots of mid table teams could really go for it in the cups but just field weaker teams. The executive decision has been made to preserve top flight status over a cup run which is sad. Would you remember that season when you finished 14th and won nothing or 18th, went down and won the FA Cup.

When Spurs last won the FA Cup in 1991, they arguably won it, in one of the last seasons, it was a big deal for all clubs, from top to bottom. Eight years later, Manchester United thought the FA Cup was that valuable, they withdrew from the competition to participate in a Club World Cup. And the FA Cup has been on the backfoot, ever since. When Spurs last won the UEFA Cup in 1984, the competition was almost on a par with the then European Cup - with more high calibre clubs in the competition. Spurs were never a ‘league winning club’, they were a cup winning club. A similar club to Chelsea in the years leading up to the Abramovich takeover. The FA Cup and UEFA Cup were the two competitions they looked to for silverware. Not even the League Cup was taken as seriously - a competition that didn’t increase on stature, until English clubs were banned from Europe in the late 80s, and top clubs needed to hype it up to recoup lost revenue. Both the FA Cup and UEFA Cup are highly devalued now. Especially as you get a CL spot for finishing 4th, now possibly 5th. Not for winning the FA Cup. Moreover the Europa League, is now a glorified qualification competition for the Champions League itself. It’s the European Super League Championship division,. Tottenham are now a club content qualifying for the UCL. That’s now their raison d’etre. Even if that means winning no silverware. There was always a risk that once the UCL was reformed to include four clubs in 1999, a club like Spurs would have happened. And if it wasn’t Spurs, it would be a similar sized club like Everton or Villa.

Man. United didn't withdraw, the FA took them out, because the FA has the arrogant stance that a club representing England and Europe in the Club World Cup isn't worth accommodating one or two matches from that club in the cups. Just ask Liverpool about it, as well.

This is probably more articulately put than I could try. I’m from the eighties so it was all about the FA Cup for me. We have never been marathon runners - more cup sprinters when it mattered. It no longer matters. We need to reinvent ourselves as marathon runners and that could happen based on financial foundations and a change in mentality
@InternetVegetable8541

@@_Ali. “devalued“ trophies are the only trophies Arsenal seems to win. - They won the Fairs Cup just before it got replaced by the UEFA Cup/Europa League. - They won the Cup Winners Cup at a time when the final was being played in half empty stadiums & only a few seasons before it was scrapped entirely. - Arsenal only started winning the FA cup more regularly when teams no longer cared about it. When clubs like Portsmouth, Wigan, Cardiff, Stoke & Hull City were getting to FA Cup finals - they last won the league when their closest rivals were starting players like Eric Djemba-Djemba & David Bellion, Liverpool were nowhere to be seen & Chelsea still had Ranieri as manager. Arsenal are like the grim reaper of trophies. Anytime they win something, that trophy is either about to die or the competition is laughably weak.

@@JoaoFerreira-pj1uc exactly. It was never going to be a popular decision but utd's hand's were kind of tied at the time. England were bidding for the 2006 World Cup at the time, and the Government and FA advised the club to go to the World Club Championship (or whatever it's called) as it may help their bid with FIFA, as skipping it or sending across a very weak squad filled with youth players and some backup squad players wouldn't please FIFA. So when the FA gave Utd the option of just skipping the FA cup that year, it made the most sense. As Ferguson was quoted as saying at the time (taken from an article on the Independant website : "We had to think of the situation regarding England hosting the World Cup," Ferguson said. "No one wants to see them not get it. I dare not think of the criticism we would have received if we had refused. That was unthinkable - and that's a Scotsman talking." What makes it worse though is that England didn't win the World Cup bid and it went to Germany so Utd playing in that tournament meant fuck all in the end lol

On the one hand you have to respect how organically those Spurs teams of the late 2010's were built. On the other, you have to agree that Tottenham are only considered a "Big Club" because they play in a super modern stadium in London and make a ton of money. Being a money-making football club in one of the (if not THE) financial centers of Europe and having a major rivalry with Arsenal that is now competitive in the wealthiest league in the world really can't be overstated from a revenue generating standpoint. But you don't get a trophy for finishing top 4 and that's certainly more of a priority for Levy and ENIC. Problem is that I think that type of mentality permeates through the club culture and by extension the playing squad. Look at Real Madrid; if they make it to the Champions League Final everyone (including them) knows they'll win because, well it's Real Madrid and it's the Champions League. I think that lack of winning mentality and a culture of profits over trophies is more to blame for Spurs not winning anything than bad luck or poor timing.

The primary reason Spurs never won anything under Poch's golden era at the club was a lack of investment EXACTLY when they needed it most. The timing of the new Spurs stadium was so unfortunate and possibly the most spursy event in recent memory. Back in 16/17 Spurs had an incredible first xi. They went undefeated at White Hart Lane and got a historic 86 points in the league. All they needed was squad depth and they could make a genuine title challenge. However, as Spurs stood on the precipice of success, THAT was the moment Levy and co decided to build a new stadium. As a result, Spurs went 2 transfer windows without buying a player and over the next couple years that incredible core of players gradually declined or left the club, never achieving the success they deserved. In a way, it's the perfect analogy of Levy's leadership. Trading short-term success for a stadium that will grant them strong revenue in the long-term
@yourmum955
@yourmum955 Ай бұрын
Well they'd been wanting to build the stadium for years and that was when they could. As a Liverpool fan, I feel like that 86-point season is never given any credit. Most people don't view any non-individual achievements that are not trophies as achievements at all and would chalk Spurs not winning the PL in 2017 down to Spurs being "bottlers". Yes, the Mourinho sacking was inexplicable, to the point where it felt like Levy DIDN'T WANT to win a trophy, but Spurs have been on the up steadily for the past 15 years or so, (they did peak in 2017, yes, but they didn't come and go like other teams) and with the new stadium and Ange, who I rate, there is a lot to look forward to for Spurs fans.

Very very simply and succinctly put in the video. The club isn't there to win trophies. Its there to make money for Enic. That's all. Look at the lack of investment when Pochs team needed one or two players to really challenge. And net transfer spend is low. We also fail to pull the trigger on players like Fernandes who we were linked with for ages. Lost coint of the amount of targets we fail to buy and bigger clubs swoop in and take them. There js also the "jam for tomorrow" transfer policy. Jed Spence and Bryan Gil anyone? We buy four or five players at 15 to 20m and hope one sticks who we then sell for massive money a la Bale. We sold Kane. Not replaced. We should have had a replacement lined up. Ee never had any intention of replacing him. Can you imagine a big club doing that I cant. I repeat. The club is merely a business. Its not run to win things. Simple as that. A per the videos initial synopsis.
