Why Dubai's $30 Billion City was Abandoned

Dubai is known for completing impossible megaprojects, and this one is truly incredible itself. Meydan One was a brand new City planned to be build directly next to Dubai back in 2015. 6 years after construction began, the developer has gone bankrupt, leaving the city completely abandoned. Throughout the video, I explain the multiple developers involved, the different parts of the project, and what the future holds for a megaproject like this one.
The biggest part of this project is Meydan One Mall, which was planned to be one of the biggest malls in Dubai. Meydan Properties, the developer of the mall, is currently out of money to finish the project. While the residential phase of the project is still in progress by a group called Azizi Developments, the rest sits completely abandoned.
Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is home to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, and a massive new development called District 1. Dubai is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Dubai, UAE, tourism, economy, District One, Meydan One.

For Everyone saying that this project is not abandoned, let me explain a few things- I thought this video would be an interesting topic after seeing an article from Bloomberg talking about how the developer, The Meydan Group, was having financial trouble. You can read the article below. After more research, I found out that this was a massive project, and that some parts of it have not even been started yet. While the District One Apartments are still under construction, the megamall in the center is abandoned as the article explains below. I hope this clears up any confusion. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-23/dubai-developer-said-to-plan-2-6-billion-debt-restructure-talks

As a person who is living in this community (D1) the Shopping mall is constructing but delayed due to covid-19 (from my house would takes 10 mins walking, 3 mins driving ), and the house is over 100% + (profit) in just "1 year" I bought the house price $3 million and now worth at least $7 M (in USD) and The Meydan Group honestly have never heard LOL, They gave each of lands community to separate developers... and the houses still in demand.. people now looking for ready to move in properties. Ps. I only lived here 3 months a yr (2 months in winter, 1 month in summer)

They even have a light rail system in their shopping mall. Met with some of the techs that set up the system. Told me their biggest problem is the sand. The sand was so fine that it got into lots of machine parts and caused the system to jam or parts to ware out. At the end the solution was to hire migrant workers to clear the sand off the rail, doors and control panels before the system starts every morning.

Dubai is so far from an incredible city, the whole thing is a glorified shopping mall, just a bigger las vegas with somehow less history and culture which I honestly thought was impossible. In Dubai you have to cross 6 freeways to get to the nearest convenient store, a 6 minute drive is a 2 hour walk, you have 100 story skyscrapers sitting directly next to American style single family suburban housing. Not to mention that with unlimited desert land, Dubai still destroys its ecosystems and oceans by building out into the sea more and more and more. The entire gigantic city also has less public transit than a city one tenth its size in Europe or East Asia. And oh yeah, the whole city was built using slave labor, wouldn’t really call that an “Incredible City.”

It's a good video! One nitpick, though: It is slightly inaccurate to call it "a new city next to Dubai". It is a city district IN Dubai, albeit a very self-contained one. But if you look at the map, most of Dubai is built that way: as self-contained districts surrounded by bigger roads, with few connections to their neighbouring districts. This "superblock" style of development happened because entire districts were sold to big developers at a time, with each developer retaining absolute control of what to build in their district. Most developers want residents and tourists to stay on their property and not stray too far, so they make their district as self-contained as possible with few ways to connect to other districts. They have connections to the highways to give general access to the area, but you usually need to drive for ten minutes to visit your neighbour who lives a couple hundred meters away on the other side of the highway. Forget walking there, the pedestrian infrastructure is beyond a joke. Even the area called "Downtown Dubai", with the Dubai Mall and Burj Khalifa, is just a particularly aggressively developed superblock by a single developer, Emaar. It does not serve as the downtown to the city at all. Not any more than any of the other districts that attempt to be a downtown, at least. In short, the whole city is a patchwork quilt of independent projects with no coherent cityscape at all. Many of these superblocks were also abandoned in the middle of construction, or had their plans scaled back drastically. Dubai is a city that builds a lot of fancy stuff, but it tends to promise ten times more than it actually builds. For instance, there have been about two dozen serious proposals to build towers taller than 400 meters in the city, after the financial crisis. *Every single one* of them has stranded. Dubai currently has three skyscrapers taller than 400 meters, but all of them began construction long before the crash of 2007. The twenty-odd rest have all failed, and the list keeps getting longer every year as new projects are announced, fail to drum up sufficient investment, and then abandoned.

@@yurlim As a resident of Singapore and Dubai and investor in HKG company, to say that they've achieved more without cheap labor is a cheap shot. Our whole civilization is built on migration from low resource areas into higher resource ones. Johor-Woodlands is one of most traversed border crossings in the world, where "cheap labor" from Bolehland comes to Singapore, works for the day and then goes back to JB, what would you say about Batam-Jurong ferries with laborers from Indonesia? For Hong Kong, research "shoebox living", or what really goes on in not-so-fancy skyscrapers of Kowloon. Haven't even touched Tokyo. Belittling one region to praise another is a very shallow comparison indeed.

The completed villas look nice but cut off from the city by a main highway and no stores around. Just a collection of luxurious cages accessible by car only ( or bike for whoever wants to risk ones life on Dubai streets). With more life around it, it could indeed be a nice setting. However, there, just like for most of Dubai, it is designed in a XX century logic and represents pretty much the pinacle of the past century mindset. Not a XXI century one.

Dubai have abandoned so many, much smaller projects (just drive along Sheikh Zayed Road, multiple half complete buildings have stood there for years), including the Dubai Pearl, on the base of the Palm. No way would they commit to completing Meydan One until it is guaranteed demand will return... which will not. The dizzy heydays of the past have gone.

The amount of media jumping on the bandwagon of ""It's all over"" You don't hear them now. Normally I wouldn't bother myself commenting but seriously, shut your negative mouth. This city is a weaving tapestry in all directions, cultural, business, industry, building... it goes on. And it will.

Well, there are a lot of abandoned projects, which you may consider late, but we all know that they won't be restarted (creek tower being a prime example). The problem with Dubai is oversupply of housing with low demand. At the same time the pricing is equivalent to London pricing without any comparison at all!! I remember walking in the Dubai Marina where I was living during the night and checking all the highrises where the majority of them were dark showing no proof of inhabitants inside. That proves the real picture behind the fancy buildings that got even worse with Covid where many expats moved back to their countries. My Prediction??Pain!!!

Building in Dubai is very difficult. Most developers can’t meet government deadlines and if you don’t get it corrected in a timely manner, the government takes over your property and project. It’s basically a way the Dubai government takes what they want. Good way to launder money.

Hi If you dont know the truth dont put comments like this. You are taking a job from goverment by accepting their terms and conditions, If you cant meet their deadlines as per the terms and conditions dont take the job. once you take the job you have to finish as per your agreement. I have been working with dubai goverment projects since 2009 and i know very well about the situations. The goverment will not take over your property or project if you delay. there will be delay fine as per the contract terms thats all.

I love Dubai for how crazy it is. But man is it a messy city full of independent projects that don't connect to each other in terms of the city planning as a whole. This city is truly just a showcase of architecture. Not a true city with actual city planning done to it. Even the skyline is all over the place; you look at it from a distance and you are like "Where the f*ck is the center of the city??". So yeah. Love Dubai, but it's got so many issues it's totally understandable why so many city planners give it a lot of hate lol.
