Everyone's concerned about what to eat, and many are turning to low-fat diets as a way to curb their weight. It makes sense, right? It's literally in the name, low fat. It will make you less fat! WRONG. You could actually gain weight by avoiding fat in favor of some sugary carb options. Here's the important role fat plays in your diet.
Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

Following is the transcript of the video:
Maybe you’ve been pouring skim milk on your cereal and spritzing non-fat dressing on your salad for years.
But it turns out, eating fat won’t make you fat.
In fact, research shows that low-fat diets don’t seem to aid in weight loss or in reducing risk of disease compared to higher fat diets.
And all those refined carbs you’ve been eating to replace that fat might be the real issue.
To understand how fat can be healthy, it’s first helpful to understand what’s going on with carbs in your body.
When you eat a simple carbohydrate, like a slice of bread, enzymes in your saliva immediately start breaking that food down into sugar. That surge of sugar triggers a hormone called insulin, which tells your body to store available energy in the bloodstream in fat tissue and other forms.
And the later surge-crash makes you feel hungry, encouraging you to eat more.
But fats are another story.
Fat isn’t processed the same way as carbs. It can’t be broken down with saliva, or fully digested by stomach acid.
Instead, your small intestines, with the aid of bile secreted by your liver, break it down. This happens much later in the digestive process, so fat digestion is much slower.
The different fats interact with your hormones in complex ways that, unlike carbs, don’t cause a massive spike in insulin.
And good fats are really important for your body to function properly.
Monounsaturated fats can be found in olive oil and avocados. This good fat helps reduce inflammation and levels of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol in the blood.
Polyunsaturated fats in foods like sunflower seeds, walnuts, and fish also have significant health benefits. Fish oil, for example, consists of one type of polyunsaturated fat called omega-3 fatty acids -- which have been found to decrease blood pressure, increase HDL or “good” cholesterol, and may also protect against heart disease.
But saturated fats found in red meat and dairy are a different story.
An extensive study found that replacing a small percentage of calories coming from saturated fats with calories from unsaturated fats reduced risk of death, heart disease, and a number of neurodegenerative diseases.
At the same time, studies show full fat dairy is healthier than reduced fat dairy.
One recent study found that drinking full-fat dairy was associated with lower risk of diabetes.
So while unsaturated fats are better, saturated fats aren't entirely useless.
Not only are unsaturated fats essential for your body, avoiding them in the name of weight loss isn’t actually a helpful way to shed unwanted pounds.
A study by the Women’s Health Initiative assigned women to low-fat diets for eight years. They found the participants didn’t seem to gain protection against breast cancer, colorectal cancer, or cardiovascular disease. And their weights were generally the same as those of women following their usual diets.
And in the carb vs fat debate, an extensive 2017 study found no association between dietary fat and heart disease. In fact, the researchers found that high-carb diets were linked to a higher risk of death.
So, if studies show that fat doesn’t make us fat or increase our risk of heart disease… and carbs make us hungry and are linked to a higher risk of death, should we all just ditch carbs altogether?
Probably not.
Recent research seems to advocate a balanced diet that includes a combination of healthy fats and complex carbs.
Researchers found that diets high in fiber and low in refined grains, meat, and sugars resulted in less weight gain.
So what should you eat? The good news is that you can find healthy fats and complex carbs in a variety of tasty foods.
You can find unsaturated fats in fish, olives, nuts, and seeds, and still have a place on your plate for so-called “good carbs.”
Although you should probably avoid eating lots of refined carbs like white bread and rice.
Foods like sweet potatoes, raw apples, and legumes are a different story., though. These foods don't cause the same sudden peaks in blood sugar.
And like healthy fats, they contribute to a balanced diet to keep your body running.
So go forth and toss some oil on that salad!

Italy has the greatest number of vegetarians in europe. Their increasing numbers have seen a corresponding increase in diabetes therefore to assume increased meat consumption per se leads to increased diabetes cannot be taken as a given w/o considering other factors but vegans will jump at any opportunity to blame animal consumption for every evil.

13Gladius 2 you're not even correct yet feel the need to post on everyone's comment. China does have the most people who are diabetic simply because they have the highest population. The number of diabetic is not very important, but the rate is what you want. Almost all these stats could make China look bad from an uneducated view not discerning rates from hard numbers

Nothing wrong with rice. You can eat carbs and fats. You need carbs just as much as you need fats. Carbohydrates provide the much needed glucose for our muscles and brain to function, just as we need fat for hormones, cell wall integrity and brain function. We need both macro nutrients - and protein. Asians have multiple copies of genes that make amylase - a saliva enzyme that breaks down carbs like rice for better digestion. So don't worry, you are genetically MADE to eat rice. As long as you don't have allergies to rice, you're good to eat it. Remember, everything in moderation. Don't over do any particular macro nutrient or food.

it's those insulin spikes which cause insulin resistance (cells become non-responsive to insulin and insulin has to increase) and blood sugar spikes and lows which cause metabolism slowdown. You get hormonal disbalance, slower metabolism, accumulation of fat, anxiety, cravings and you enter a wheel that is hard to leave and ends with obesity and type 2 diabetes (which develops from that insulin resistance because less sensitive cells are, more insulin they need, more insulin is produced until pancreatic islets get tired and stop producing).

its a 5 minute video on a 20 hour topic. Although he did say it without putting neon lights around it. First off, red meat fat isn't bad its good. And its good because it doesn't spike your insulin. Insulin does a number of things to your body. It tells your body to release a hormone that says "don't burn any stored fat, we got food coming in" which is why eating 5 small meals a day is the worse thing you can do for weight loss. Also insulin shortens your telomeres, so every time you eat, you shorten your life span. I've been eating one meal a day since I learned this (I was already doing an 18/6 intermittant fast so it wasn't a big jump for me).

So true. I went to Guatemala for a mission trip for my school. Guatemala is a country with lots of poverty you can see it everywhere. The water is dirty my administrator told me to not brush my teeth because i could get sick by just touching the tap water. The clean water there only comes from bottled water and its so expensive. In fact soda is cheaper by a huge margin so most people just go with soda almost anything that has sugar is cheap there too. This explains why they have so many overweight people despite being poor. Our mission was to hand out as many water filters as possible. I hope they find peace and joy and live happy lives.

The very important caveat here is that the "bad" carbs are the simple carbs. That is to say, processed and refined carbs. Think sugar and its many names (dextrose, maltose, high fructose corn syrup etc etc etc), as well as flours of many varieties (wheat, corn, rice etc). They have been refined, they are cheap, they add bulk to foods, and they taste good. Good carbs are in the natural form (ie fruits and vege) contain a lot of fibre and cannot be broken down as easily, which more digestion being done in the gut. This helps to add bulk to your stool (reducing constipation), which keeps you feeling full longer. Certain veges are better (eg broccoli, spinach, kale, celery etc basically your leafy greens) than others (potatoes, carrots, corn etc) because the latter are starches which can be broken down by saliva. Fruits are in the same category but still should be consumed in place of candy and other refined stuff. Don't go full anti-carb because you'll miss out on all the nutrients like vitamins they contain. And, trust me, lots of fibre makes pooping such a glorious thing. Just try a high fibre diet, and see what I mean.

It doesn’t matter what you eat as much as regulating the amount and variety (look it up)- consistency is key. And low fat usually means less calories if you’re consuming the same amount in terms of carbs of course that’s not good. I hate how news nowadays changes the subject and tries to manipulate information to make you more conscious about things that done really matter.

@guibox3

Obviously if you eat more than your body burns on a regular basis it will be stored as fat. However, the types of food you eat control the hormones that are the determinant in fat loss or fat storage. If you are eating foods that control insulin and fasting to create ketones, than your body will be efficient at burning fat instead of storing it which means excess calories can be burned instead of stored if you were eating a high carb diet, eating often and spiking insulin even at a caloric restriction. The answer is both 'yes' and 'no'.

@guibox3
@guibox3 Жыл бұрын
Yes, but the amount of calories your body burns or uses can fluctuate and hormones control whether your body truly stores fat or burns it. 'Calories in vs calories out' is the gun but hormones pull the trigger and this is why diets like keto, carnivore and Mediterranean diets are far more efficient at burning fat than standard caloric restriction diets. Your body isn't just a scale balance. Some people need more calories not less, for their body to become optimal fat burning machines. Hormone manipulation will determine the efficiency of your caloric output. If it were just a matter of 'balance your calories in with calories out', we wouldn't have people eating less and less and still not losing weight. Basal metabolic rate, hormones like insulin and cortisol as well as controlling ghrelin and leptin will determine caloric output efficiency.

Because fat has more protein which is made you not hungry for a day. Carb on the other hand made you feel hungry faster because your body break those carb into a sugar and trigger the insulin inside your body. Just eat carb in a moderated way because your brain still need a carb for functioning

This guy has not been up to date with the science. When people say a high carb diet they usually mean processed foods and provessed foods are high in SUGAR and FAT and often SALT. Having a salad without oil is better because you gain 2x to 3x less calories which means you can fill your stomach with more volume.

this video ALMOST got it, but there is still some missinformation about fat sources and saturated fat plant based polyinsaturated fat has close to no omega 3s, and olive oil is still a processed oil rather you like or not you DONT NEED to replace animal fat with plant based monoinsaturated fat, because animal fat already has PERFECT fat ratio profile breast milk, the "perfect human food" fat content: about 50% saturated fat, 40% monoinsaturated fat and 10% polyinsaturated fat that including high DHA/EPA beef tallow (not grain fed) 50% saturated fat, 45% monoinsaturated and 5% polyinsaturated, have K2 and other nutrients pork fat about the same as tallow, but higher in vitamin D3 nuts and seeds are too high in omega 6 and close to no omega 3, and extremely high in antinutrients, you will be getting close to no vitamins, minerals and protein from them, only inflamatory nutrients avocado and coconut MEAT (not cream or oil) should be fine, but still no omega 3s and still carry some anti nutrients olive oil is still processed oil, no nutrients like K2 or D3 present like in rendered animal fat, goes rancid extremely easy, also the body cant assimilate processed oil due to the low saturated fat content
