The smartphone market seems like a terrible place to create a start up. It's inaccessible and there's brutal competition at every level. Any innovation you make is unlikely to win you much market share before it's either rejected, or adopted by the more established brands at which point you lose your point of difference. What was the last company which won a share of the phone market without brute forcing their way in with vast amounts of capital and undercutting in price?

Not entirely, I remember an old Reddit thread surrounding its announcement if I recall correctly in which I seemed to be one of the few who were critical of it. I argued that most people would not care to buy accessories for their phone, the ones specific for their device and that a phone should be good out of the box. I also brought up how its specs were much higher than what most people would need, basically going against their own name. Most were excited that 'the father of Android' was working on/brought out a phone and only focused on that. I've had something similar with the Oculus Rift. Most were too excited about the product to consider that it could be very expensive. They either didn't care or weren't too worried about it and then it was announced to be $600 or so, which was followed by people being upset. These things happen more often than we'd like to admit. The moral of the story is: don't become too excited. It won't hurt to have some scepticism, a healthy amount as people say.

From what I understand, they needed to generate revenue to get investment so they can work on 2nd gen. Kinda like how Amazon created AWS so it can fund other stuff it is making. Unfortunately Dandy , cool design just does not cut the mustard if the reviewers that show the (Product ) phone to the world find fairly important flaws in the device , even if the flaws are small and fixable . People (the average mid , low income earners ) who have some hard earned cash in their hand do not want to risk buying a lemon . If you look at car companys over the years for example , you can see some car companys that have been around for many many decades and have had very changeable fortunes over those years , I will not name names , but certain car companies never really got the memo that if you want to get repeat customers , you must sell product that is fit for sale and give customer satisfaction and not going to need repairs under warranty at first ,second and third service ,etc ,etc . In other words customers have to be fairly happy with the product straight out of the showroom , or out of the box as it relates to phones in this case.. I am with you though mate , i hate seeing companys go out of business , even flawed ones .

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

At 300$, the phone was a steal and well worth the money. By that point (Decemeber 2017), the software team ironed out all the bugs save for a few camera ones. It felt really snappy, had a great xda community and even got support for a few alternative os distributions. And few phones managed to make people turn their heads like essential did with its stunning yet minimalist design. (Might be biased as I've got one myself)

I purchased one for my mom for about 250 and she's been happy with it. I can't imagine them making any margin at that price point though. The bill of materials of flagships usually clocks in somewhere between 250 and 350, never mind development, marketing or any other cost of doing business. The product wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good enough to justify a profitable price point.

Stasys Čhepulis What’s the purpose though? You can sometimes make a case for unconventional phones like the Galaxy Fold because it offers more screen, and there was even a case to be made for tall phones like the Sony Xperia 1 - but the Gem looked pointless. That aspect ratio would not compliment anything - not productivity, not media consumption, nothing.

@@hrespin7682 I do have somewhat of a personal stake - i'm developing a mobile game that might look interesting on a long phone. Generally, if developers put in some effort, there are interesting implications for interface design and gameplay (sure, most would just half-ass it tho). Could also be useful *as* interface - imagine using a few of these for some interesting modular interface. Finally, as a fashion statement. I can see some fashionista using an odd long phone just for the sake of it.

Stasys Čhepulis the thing here is that it will be just be like a second coming of the Windows Phone. That one failed because it just got caught in a negative feedback loop of not having any developers wanting to build apps on their platform because no one is using their platform and no one wants to use their platform because it doesn’t have any worthwhile apps. Okay so my thoughts: I own the PH-1, I got it one year after launch when the price was tremendously low (imported it to Germany). Since then, I am really happy about it, and yes, particulary about the amazing software support with on par service as Google (sometimes faster). Other than that I think the phone is esthetic and still after three year past the launch, it can do nearly everything and still doesn't have to hide compared to recent devices. However, I completely agree with your argumentation. Software support as the main selling point it's something for the masses. Neither does modularity, which in this specific case additionally was pretty weak. I guess mostly people (especially in the tech world) were eagerly waiting for a second gen device, as by then the company was able to establish their identity. I personally was always hoping, that they could in fact repeat their innovation, like they were the first ones with a big, bezelless notched screen with e.g. a completely bezelless screen, or just updated specs. I assume, bringing such a device to market at least has more potential than just working in their labs and never going to market and failing completely eventually.
@dodekaphilist
@dodekaphilist 4 жыл бұрын
@Setzer K It was the first phone with a proper notch while being bezeless (on three sides like the Mi Mix, which did that first but put the camera in the bottom corner) (www.techradar.com/news/cut-it-out-a-brief-history-of-the-smartphone-notch) As you say, it's also on of the few devices being high end while being relatively small, other than the Mi Mix. I had the smaller second gen of it in hand and it was way to big for me. Furthermore, while more and more OEMs release phones with close stock Android, it's still difficult to get a great clean experience. Skins from Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Huawei or Samsung modify the system so tremendously, which kills it for me. If you want to have an iPhone, buy one, don't just copy it (esp. Huawei)! And I'm not even mentioning that from the developer perspective those companies shit on standard Android and change things only for the sake of change, which requires developers to write the exact same code for multiple manufacturers multiple times.

Some of this criticism of the ph-1 seems off base to me. I actually bought it at launch, and it had great hardware, it was one of the only phones at the time with a cool "tear drop" cut out for the selfie camera, it was made from titanium and ceramic, a first for the time if I remember right. The only thing it lacked was a good camera, which could be improved by using a pixel camera app apk. And it still works great to this day, its my dads phone now. I dont think a bad product is what killed them, because it was a good product, I think it was all the other stuff with not really knowing what they wanted to do.

I had the PH1 for awhile and loved it. Very few issues for me and software updates were as prompt as the Pixel. My issue was reception. With my carrier, which can be weak to begin with did not work too well with the Essential and ultimately caused me to trade it away for a Pixel 2XL.

Why am I the only person out there that could give a damn about a cells-camera... I'd honestly prefer a phone without a selfie camera. This dude is way off regarding stock Android. I bought an essential phone when it was like $200, I had pretty good foresight to know it would go out of business soon and it outlasted my initial estimates, however I still daily drive it, and it has lasted awhile so I feel as though I have gotten value out of it. Signal kinda sucks, however I live in an area where that can be said about most smartphones. I have been using LineageOS since it received official support from the awesome lineage team, however I was still disappointed to see the company go under, because I know it will no longer receive official updates. I don't use a phone for much (alarm, spotify, reddit) so I will keep using it for as long as Lineage provides support. I loved the build quality (titanium and ceramic) and stock android is a must for me, but I will be disappointed when I have to retire it. For a smartphone (issues aside), it received great support, and I'm glad it lasted as long as it did. I don't know how much longer I will keep it in service, but my options moving forward will probably be Pixel (probably an older model given the price) or OnePlus.

And, just within the last couple days, Essential shared that they're providing the platform for users of the PH-1 to get Android 11 when it comes out. This failed phone company has managed to pull off the release with the MOST Android updates of ALL, in the entirety of the the lifespan of Android phones. Support like THIS is why so many of us loved Essential and the PH-1, and will for a long time.

I still have fond memories of my PH-1, and still sometimes yank it out of the box if there's a funky ROM I feel like trying out for a day or two. Its original main draw was being one of the few non-Pixel stock Android providers, but as the video said, that now happens to be a moot point. My current daily driver is a Pixel 4 XL, and I'd say I'm even more satisfied than I was with my Essential. On the flipside, though, the way Essential stuck to merely gluing that last tiny strip of ceramic onto the SIM card tray's cover is a serious disappointment. I changed carriers twice in four years, and both times resulted in my ordering a replacement for the SIM tray, because the little ceramic strip's glue would flake off as soon as I'd use the tool to open the tray. My Pixel's a lot less fancy on the outside, but I at least feel like I won't be ordering replacement parts anytime soon.

puli vikas OnePlus survives because of a very strict strategy of cost cutting back in the day and a marketing campaign of being wrongfully viral too. BBK also definitely have their backs as well during the time, there’s no way they could undercut much of the competition during that time and still having a hell of a marketing campaign without crazy money from BBK.
