Monster Hunter World is trending with more and more players on Steam, while Rise continues to lose players. Why is this happening, and what can this tell us about Capcom's design plans for Monster Hunter Wilds? With Monster Hunter Wilds Release date set for 2025, most big decisions have been made, and the divided fanbase over the two games, the differences with the Japan audience and feedback, it's going to be either a slam dunk or another divisive game in the franchise, and I wanted to talk about it all a bit.

I checked the steam charts. Turns out the average was 30-40k daily until asmongold started playing then the player count increased to over 100k. While its clear he brought alot of old players back and some new players into the game, it still had more players on average than Rise. The main reason World has more compared to Rise is simply world has alot more content with Rise being a pretty poor game with a short single player compared to the insane amount of stuff in world + iceborne. Wilds will be very popular on release and the longevity will depend on how dense the content is. With tons of stuff, it will stand the test of time.

December 16th Peak players: 94K. It then goes in the following dates 97k, 94k, 97k, 9k, 99k, trending up to 121k on December 26th. All before he began streaming, reacting, or even uploaded a video. The thing that made rise so extremely arcadey wasn't the mounts (palamutes) but the wirebug stuff. Also having a mount does not necessarily mean that Wilds will be faster, it probably simply means its much bigger and you need a mode of transportation other than running yourself. Btw you also had mounts in world already and those didn't make it any faster either.

@@thiagobarbieri7476 Rise was way too fast for my taste. The thing I liked about world is that your decisions in combat matter and that you "dance" with the monster, in rise none of this was present as the wirebugs negated any kind of punishment you would receive from making mistakes. Plus with all the broken op armor skills sunbreak brought you could completely ignore pretty much anything the monster was doing and brute force your way through every fight. Don't get me wrong, it was fun for a while, but it got boring so damn fast.

Rise pretty much made almost every weapon a counter weapon. I mean jesus, I was getting more KOs with my SnS than my hammer . Each weapons had their roles in previous games but with almost every weapons sharing the same traits or capabilities it makes them pointless. Also the obvious bias to certain weapons is appalling. Increased another 400hrs total, since ive recently gone back to them the past year), it felt fine for me. I never really cared for immersive environments within the zones themselves; Just enough where it feels like a different zone with some verticality here and there. MH to me was always about Player Expression and Rise really appealed to tht for me. Switching around combos, roughly 3 times the amount of viable sets to make from compared to World, etc. Never felt drained and honestly glad tht nearly every entry has something different to offer to the player. Each entry appeals to different type of players for their needs and wants in a action rpg. Which is why its one of the only series where I actively see ppl goin through multiple entries and creating alot of smaller communities around them. Plus, I prefer the general OST of Rise over World. @@Daigon95 Luckily you'll have RIse and the older MH games to sate you. Myself and many others see the Rise model as a serious dead end, one that is verging on not feeling like MH anymore. @Daigon95
@Daigon95 5 ай бұрын
@@RicochetForce Player Expression has always been one vital core for the series since they started leaning into it with MHFU, which funny enough it was also made by the same "team" tht made Rise. (well it was mix of tht team and devs from Frontier) It's always the more experimental members tht helps push the series forward. If it wasnt for them pushing for new ideas then we wuld've never gotten the current things like Canteen, Farms, Skill system, Decos/Charms or Palico's. So in the end it doesnt matter on whtever "percieved many others" tht u hav. Both sides of MH hav existed for years and it needs to stay tht way. They created this near unique culture where the community actively encourages playing multiple entries since they all offer different kinds of experiences. We don't need the newly entered members of the community to slowly turn it into one single thing; It will eventually stagnate the series. What we got with World was a culmination of efforts and experimentation of ideas tht worked and didnt over the years. It's my only real concern when MH finally broke into mainstream with World. I just hope the devs dont try to appeal too much to westerners. Capcom tried to do it back during 7th gen and early 8th gen with consoles (by letting western devs take over) and its considered the "Dark Ages", where it felt like many of their ip's lost touch with their audience and most ultimately will never come back or not for a long time. MHWorld and Re7 started off their new found good will with the overall gaming community.

Also the difficulty is more focused on the efficiency of the hunt and not the success rate. Its HARDER to survive in MHW but in Rise it's about utilizing more tools for efficient hunts. Better grinds, which is another aspect. Grinding has to be streamlined on portable, however just because it's faster paced doesn't mean its just given to you. I’ve been playing MH since the original on PS2 and have played all the ones that came to the west minus the PSP entries. Generations Ultimate is also my favorite of the “classic” MH. When Wilds was announced I got the itch again and went back to Rise myself, but that’s largely because I prefer Rise’s endgame. I really didn’t like the Guiding Lands and I didn’t like how World handled decorations. That being said, I hope Wilds is more grounded like World. Not because I dislike how wacky Rise is, I love its wackiness and overall speed, but I think both types of MH experiences are valid and after putting in hundreds of hours of Rise for a second time, I’m ready for a slower and more grounded experience. We haven’t seen much of Wilds, but it’s possible that the mount is just Capcom keeping a good idea that Rise had and not indicative of its overall speed. It seems like the areas and maps in Wilds are going to be much larger than World and if you had to run on foot everywhere it could get boring pretty quickly. Rise’s areas aren’t even that big and I can’t stand doing a hunt without a palamute. Regardless, I’m still super excited for Wilds. MH hasn’t disappointed me yet and I don’t expect that to start now.

I don't think they are going to lean into Rise over World. I think they'll take a bit of both, but I think the scope and feel of the game will be more on par with World. Bigger creators in the series have indicated that the World -> Rise cycle is pretty typical where they'll have a bigger slower paced title followed up by a somewhat more straightforward type version within a generation. I personally think the mount is an indication of perhaps a larger overall zones where distances travelled will be much larger than in World. I don't necessarily think it is intended to make the whole game feel sped up. I do think they'll double down more on verticality though.

My reason for sticking with World is that rise, while fun, was very shallow in its world design, ecology, challenge and pacing. World felt like you were really uncovering a mystery while fighting powerful monsters and elder dragons, all while exploring the titular world which was packed with plants, small monsters and endemic life. It’s not about the graphics like many people say, but about the fact that the world is alive and you feel like a part of it. You drop into your first hunt with minimal knowledge of the new world and you have to track the monsters yourself. Meanwhile, Rise has minimal foliage, a desaturated and almost dead color palette and monsters that are programmed to constantly and aimlessly move back and forth. Small monsters exist, but they awkwardly fade out once a large monster enters the area. Endemic life is here, but I wish it wasn’t. I don’t want to see a stationary butterfly whose only reason is awaiting being stabbed, I want to see a living creature. What about the tracking you say? There is no tracking, you start every hunt as an omnipotent being that instantly knows every monster’s location. Lore was never monster hunter’s strong point, but in rise it all feels random and anticlimactic. From the moment magnamalo shows up literally EVERYONE knows what he is and exactly why he’s there. I cleared every hunt first or second try so there was no real challenge either. I spent the Narwa fight running around the boss because I didn’t want to kill the final boss on the first try either. Don’t even get me started on the fact that ibushi and Narwa were the only elder dragons at launch. Sunbreak was a lot better, but in terms of improving upon the base game, Iceborne still did better.

I think at least half of the issues you mentioned were compromises they had to make because of that old-ass switch hardware. Scripts for behavioral patterns in wildlife take processing power that the switch just doesn't have, same with object count that would make the environment feel more detailed and realistic. You can actually feel the difference in the monsters combat behavior between switch and pc. On pc they seem much more reactive than on switch. This tells me that they were really fighting for every bit of hardware resources and I'm pretty sure they had a huge list of things they wanted to do but couldn't because of those limitations, which is why the entire game feels so inconsistent and dumbed down with its features.

Comparing it to world might be unfair but I still prefer the older titles. I still enjoyed it and have over 350 hours in it, but it’s not as polished as world. Some of the problems I have with it are also because of my personal preferences. For example I despise the „free climbing” since there’s no reason to use it because the monsters still go through set corridors. Wirebugs are also not my thing since it’s not exactly realistic to fling yourself around at the speed of sound with a bug. They also made the hunter stronger than the monsters, unlike in older games where the monsters each feel like apex predators. The only new rise feature I really liked were palamutes because they help you get around and allow easy sharpening or healing in a fight.

People can hate on Rise, but I think they did a GREAT job for their role as "Middle" game. Probably my favorite non mainline MonsterHunter game. The wirebug system was A LOT of fun to master, and the combat system was much deeper and much more fluid. I understand if they don't bring back wire bug, but I hope they do a mini version of it like a sling rope or something. Made the maps feel like large ecosystems vs spots and tunnel/paths. The griffin-like mount could be them balancing the palamute and wire bug. It will give the verticality and creative movement that the wirebug and palemute did, but more toned down and efficient. This will also give them the freedom to make much vaster areas (hopefully). When we have to walk the maps have to be kind of compact, but now they can really make the world feel VERY open and possibly vast like fantasy RPGs.

World was fun in its realistic hunting a tracking, but did tend to get tedious when having to make long treks to the monster across the map. If the name means anything, with how worlds whole theme was that "it's a big game, with huge living zones that make it A Monster Hunter world" with the title being Monster Hunter Wilds, I feel like they might change it from being multiple huge zones we can go into to one or two MASSIVE zones, that branch off and interchange with various biomes, creating a true open world or "Wild" setting for the game. I think Wilds could still hone in on that if they do the mount system correctly - increase the distance traveled but not change the time it takes to reach the monster. Keep the pacing roughly equivalent to World but let the player experience greater sized environments in that time.

I have no issues with mounts being in the game, especially if their primary use is just speeding up traversal of the environment. I just, no matter what, do NOT want Wirebug or anything similar to it to come back. It really took away the identity of almost every weapon. Part of picking weapons is whether or not you have blocks or counters, and wirebug really just made everything have counters and get out of jail free cards. There were no longer any drawbacks to picking a specific weapon, and that completely ruined Rise for me.

I’m curious what will they do with the franchise in their 20 year anniversary. Like a remake of a old game might be good for the old fans but what about people who started in 5th generation? I believe Capcom will take advantage on people playing world and maybe add more updates… maybe add cross play will be a good idea (well mostly because I want that). But if they do add more content and hopefully cross play it’ll feel like a new game.

My first experience with monster hunter was a two-way tie between Freedom and Freedom Unite on the PSP in middle school to highschool days in the mid to late 2000s. It was much slower and even janky back then so much so I couldn't fully get into it. World truly found that new balance between approachable, organic and cinematic. Thank you for answering the question about Sunrise though. I couldn't properly describe it. Even I got burned out of that game way too quickly considering how fun the fast paced combat is.

The only other game I’ve played in the franchise was the og game On ps2 when I was a teen, and the pacing and different behavior of the monsters gave it an immersive and lived in feel that I fell in love with. To me that is monster hunter, and now that I’ve started worlds I’m getting the same vibe and as such it feels the most like monster hunter to me. I do like flashy fast paced combat systems which does make rise appealing, but I’m just in the mood for a game that locks me in a bit more and let’s me be a part of the world (haha)rather than soemthing that’s better in short bursts that start to feel a little bit repetitive. Either way I’m glad everyone is discovering this game for the first time or even rediscovering it, it’s so unique and I’m excited to see where the game will go.

It's important to know that the last Monster Hunter game I invested a significant amount of time in before the current generation was Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP and I absolutely loved that game. Bought an additional copy to play it with a friend and all. Now that said, I got Monster Hunter World when it first came out on PS4 and I didn't make it past HR4 because it was just too slow for me. It's still sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust. I ended up getting Rise on the Switch to play it with a friend and I ended up putting in over 150 hours into the game before Sunbreak came out. I even bought it when it released on Steam and started playing it again on my Steam Deck, putting in another 150+ hours into it. Fast forward to now, I've been wanting to go back to play Monster Hunter but not Rise because I was at the point where I wasn't really out of anything to do but I didn't want to catch up on the events. As for World, it was on sale on steam, so I bought it to give it a second try... and still hated the opening few hours but pushing through because it's scratching it itch I haven't been able to satisfy since Elden Ring. It also helped that people are playing it again too so it doesn't feel like I'm playing only with veteran players steam rolling everything if I joined a game with other people.

@@neku2741 "It's not a problem that the monsters cannot, objectively, keep up with the player's mobility, instant recovery, heal with top speed mobility, and negate their weapons' inherent slow speed state." You do not understand game design. Monster Hunter is engaging because of the comple interplay between the monster and player. The back and forth, the recognition and exploitation of windows of opportunity for attack, etc... THAT is player engagement. That is not what Rise has. Rise allows you to completely ignore all of that and just zip-zap-zoop around the monsters and shred them. The game is demonstrably easier than any previous MH game. The game feels more like a Devil May Cry title where the design goal of that title is to style on enemies, with grades given for doing so fabuously and without damage. It's no surprise that people are gravitating towards the one that feels like an actual hunt in an actual world.

Both can be considered as the most polished and dynamic games of the franchise. I think that vanilla Rise is better that people give it credit and Sunbreak is absolutelly fantastic, having, imo, the best roster for a Monster Hunter "ultimate". That being said, Monster Hunter World Iceborne still be my favorite game ever simply because it is the peak of what brings me to Monster Hunter first time: I was at a friend's house and I found a flyer of MH3 featuring the Jaggi, Qurupeco, Gobul, Uragaan and Lagiacrus in a size-comparison display. There was a little description for each monster, explaining how the monsters works on an animal perspective. Zoology being my passion, finding an action game featuring fantasy creatures displayed like animals immediatly clicked. And seeing World explanding that aspect to an entire ecosystem level is why I absolutelly love in Monster Hunter World Iceborne (this and the sheer epicness and diversity of every battle) And Wilds seems to follow the same path and going even further

For the mount point: It doesn't actually HAVE to be faster paced. The rumor is they are trying to make this game open world. If this is true mount traversal would almost be needed in order to not spend hours running from one end of the map to the other. @@ImTheTrueHealer The older games are more challenging for solo players because of hub monsters have bloated HP, especially in G/Master rank, which was designed only around multiplayer. But in terms of fighting the actually monsters (with a decent controller), I agree they're not that different. It's just that surviving a tough challenge for 40 minutes is tougher than surving a challenge for 20 minutes just based on time (and in G rank where a monster can kill you in two hits, it really tests your consistency). Speaking as someone who has only ever played solo though, I don't miss having to deal with the bloated HP of hub monsters in 3U, 4U, or GU. I think 5th gen handles it better by adjusting monster HP based on how many hunters are in the hunt. Also, Rise to me is similar to World in terms of monster difficulty, but the real issue is how easy it is (and how sloppy it feels) to wirefall and heal when you get hurt. In World I can sometimes still get carted when I get knocked around and can't quite avoid the next monster attack that was perfectly timed to catch my recovery (which usually pisses me off, but it's the same in the older games, ha ha).

As long as there's limitations, like actually using stamina, and not being usable in combat (or not allowing functions like item use during combat while mounted), I think it'll be fine. Evade extender 2 + Wire Bugs was faster than palamutes in a straight line. Just dodging with EvExtend Lv 3 kept pace with palamutes. They aren't the problem I have with Rise. Given that Wilds is likely to be open world (as is the trend of games with Wild in their title) the mount will likely be the primary locomotion so that you aren't forced to sprint everywhere. Palamutes didn't set the pace of Rise, wirebugs did. Wirefall, fast recharge and universal cooldown skills. The major fights didn't incorporate Palamutes at all in Rise, but Amatsu, the Serpents and Rampage at least incorporated wirebugs. All the dlc monsters took place in arenas, no need for palamute to get to the fight faster. Riding them dropped their dps so you didn't do that. Personally, I found using Palamute to traverse maps incredibly clunky. Just use wirebugs and fast travel to get to where you need to go. The dogs where never the problem (and outside of speedruns, using them was more detrimental than helpful) it was the actual combat change in the game that is 98% combat an 2% looking at a minimap to find the monster (if that). The wirebugs. Blaming the palamutes for faster game pace is actually cope, simply because they were something that you could easily ignore entirely and have all the same issues. EDIT: spelling

Exactly. It's bizarre to look at Wilds' large, expansive open world setting and seeing the mount and go: "Uh, guys, it looks like it's going to be like Rise." Err, no. An open world necessitates a mounted option, be that a car, horse, bird, machine, glider, etc... It's part of the fantasy of such a setting. It allows players to get to points of interest without breaking immersion with a loading screen. Open world masters like Rockstar have even done presentations at GDC pointing out all that undergirds a good open world setting, the right content density, allowing times for players to breathe and collect themselves. None of that says the game has to be a near-consequence free high speed frenetic action mess. Wirebugs were absolutely a mistake for all the reasons you posted and more.

8:38 About the gaming portability stuff in Japan, I think the line is getting blurred now thanks to things such as steam deck(and that it's being sold officially in Japan). Yeah it's not quite as popular as nintendo switch atm, but I think given how popular is portable MH experience in Japan, I think we have real potential here, especially since MHWilds will come out in 2025. It gives enough prep time for many people so to speak.

About Steam Deck. I live in Japan and I was considering getting a Steam Deck when the OLED version came out. But there is exactly one (!) online shop that sells the Steam Deck and nothing else (it's not even through Steam), and you can't get it anywhere else. It was also sold out in a couple days so I can't imagien the stock was very large. The Steam Deck is a thing, yes, but it feels incredibly niche. Especially with how niche PC gaming here is in general, a Linux device sounds even more niche than that. Maybe it will get popular eventually, but as it stands, you wouldn't even know the Steam Deck exists unless you already know what to look for.
@Arpin_Lusene
@Arpin_Lusene 5 ай бұрын
@@Vokoca Well it is still quite a recent thing in Japan and it was a trial to see if it will even works. Since it's sold out within a couple days, I can't see why they won't continue to expand on it unless they hate money. Plus we still have more than one year until MHWilds, so I think they have more than time to sell more steam deck and getting the public there to know it. Also since MHWilds will comes out on steam right from the start, I imagine that in Japan, they will do some heavy promotion for steam deck using the popularity of MH series(since like they are almost everywhere in Japan) especially during the end of the year of 2024 and the beginning of 2025. The time is just too ripe for steam deck not to take advantage the release time of MHWilds. Since a couple months ago in MHWorld steam page there is a post about the game being steam deck verified, it means that the capcom team also knows the steam deck well for some time now, that's why they are also releasing on steam at the same time during the initial release of MHWilds. Capcom will definitely gonna do some promotion of their own too for steam decks, not just valve.

As a player who is on the "World is way better than Rise" narrative. For me, the reason why I love World better is because its more "grounded" than Rise. Not because of the verticality the Wirebug offers, but how the hunters are on the same pace as the monster. The problem I had and still have with RiseBreak is that the hunters kept on getting upgrades while the monsters were left on the dust. Hunters are so mobile in that game, that the monsters werent given the kit to catch up to the new mobility changes (like tracking/faster projectiles, faster turn speeds etc.). Thats why they feel more like punching bags than the "stars" of the game. In World, when you do your attacks, or if they connect, theres wind up for follow up; so monsters can react to those attacks accordingly.

Rise is such a step back. I enjoyed playing through Rise and Sunbreak, some of my favorite monsters ever are from it like Magnamolo. But the end game of Rise was non-existent and then Sunbreak anomolies I just outright hated. I hate the grind and how all the monsters look like they were dunked in red gatorade. I also hate how it's so counter focused. There's just so much to manage I just would rather play World instead which is closer to that raw, Freedom Unite-like, MH experience. Clutch claw can get annoying, yeah, but the visuals, feel, lively lobbies (Rise matchmaking is broken without mods) just feels so much better. Also Rise is so ugly. Get 4 players, 4 palamutes, give them buffs and have them all attack a monster and you can't hardly see what's going on. The effects are so bad. Idc that much about graphics I go back to the old games all the time, but when the game looks like a mess I don't want to look at it. PSP environments look better. Everything in Rise is just gray and brown except the Sunbreak area which is just overly saturated.

the main reason I felt Rise wasn't fun to play was that I really didn't care what my armor set or weapon was for each fight. I didn't have to worry about specific resistances or armor set bonuses because it really wasn't an issue because of that high movement. Honestly I think Rise could have been fixed if the numbers were tweaked and getting hit was far more dangerous (you're a damn ninja after all, if you can zip across the map and dodge with no problem, why not make it so that you can die much easier and that your armor actually made a difference and balance between having better defence (and allowing mistakes) over damage? frankly the only saving grace was that your handlers is just better than World's Handler (I don't hate her like everyone else though)

This kinda always happens with Portable titles. When Generations came out it didn't sell as well as 4U and tons of people went back to 4U to the point it had more online rooms than Generations. World is the main 5th gen title, Wilds will be the main 6th gen title. They always have two concurrent teams working on the games.

I had fun playing Rise but one thing that made me love World more is the environment. Like I was transported to another world. I know that Rise was made for Switch, but some of the environment doesn't feel like its real or believable. The sand area was an exception. It was believable compared to other zone that felt like stages. You can say the same thing with World but the extra details, denser foliage, monster behavior outside combat and the small creatures that you can capture is what made it stand out for me.

this is gonna be one heck of a long comment and it is not going to be super relevant to the video, but for for me, my first time playing monster hunter was when I was within single digits of age, I vaguely remember playing a 15 USD monster hunter game on the iPad 2 I had saved up chore money for, as well as a monster hunter game for the Wii, both of which I remember playing long, long ago when I was still single digits in age. However, as with most things I engaged with in those times, my attention and interest was fleeting, and it was not long before both of these games became nothing but faint memories. I don't remember the exact timeframe, but somewhere between a 6-8 months before the MHW dlc was announced, I found out about MHW, and remembering my short time loving the games when I was very young, I spent the money on world, and returned to monster hunter. and honestly, it was and still is among my favorite games I have ever played, up there with Pokémon BW 1/2, Mario Wonder, all 4 Pikmin games, Subnautica, Titanfall 2, and Baldur's gate 3. there was just so much i loved about it, from the battles the monsters had among each other, the fascinating details and designs of each creature, the awesome biological focus provided by the game (which as a fan of biology, is a topic i find to be sorely lacking in the widespread game industry) and the diverse weapons and combat system, it was all incredible. and while my old, 500 USD computer setup at the time struggled to even play it on low graphics, i still found myself captivated by the gorgeous veritable pixel lasagna that made up my screen as I blindly stumbled my way from one frame per second to another. but after all was said and done, and i had completed world to my heart's content, i found myself looking at rise and thinking to myself, "why am i not feeling the same things about rise that world gave me?". and even after all this time, i have never been able to pinpoint just what was missing, but I know for certain that world just had something that rise does not, a subconscious draw or appeal that veils itself beneath the unexplained and unyielding euphoria that world gives me. with all this said, I personally hope the next entry in the monster hunter franchise follows in the footsteps of world, as I would love to relive the indescribable enjoyment of it all once more. (a neat little side note, the Wii one i never got past the tutorial, as I recognized I was killing helpless herbivores in the beginning, and as I have been against violence towards the helpless/harmless since childhood I simply had my mom return the game to GameStop the next day)

I'll be honest, I did not like Rise that much. I did not grind Sunbreak like I did Iceborne. They're both great for their own reasons, but World/Iceborne is much better for me. The slower combat feels more deliberate, the graphics, the ecology, the only dislike I have for it is the multiplayer. Rise improved on the only gripe I have for world, but took a large downgrade in how the monsters feel. Like you said at 3:56, as a newbie to the series, I love fighting the monsters instead of it feeling like a boss battle.

I am not going backwards (compared to World) in overall visuals/graphic fidelity with what was still a switch game essentially . So i'm skipping it (yeah yeah my loss) and waited for something instead like Wilds , and sticking to playing Worlds sometimes . Again it may be shallow for enough people , that might feel that Rise's gameplay and other addition should be enough for a "real fan" ... but i'm not aiming to be one , and just like what i like , and know what i want .

i totally get what you mean when you say with world it is so easy to just make yourself comfy and sit and play the game for an entire day and the hours just fly by without much thought. Ive been playing MH since Tri just like you and world is the game ive put the most hours into by far (about 1500 hours by the time rise came out). I think a big part of the reason why is because the environments are just such a pleasure to explore and immerse yourself in. The game is just beautiful to look at and the world just feels so real (which was obviously the whole point of the game to begin with).

I just hope they don't trivialize travel with the mount. I like monkeying my way through the maps on foot, but maps for mounts tend to be more like race tracks than obstacle courses. My hope is that they just have large connective expanses with some neat things to do here and there, and maybe some gargantuan monsters too big for smaller zones, while still having super interconnected areas like in MHW. Essentially an open world MHW.
