Why everyone HATES the Miami Grand Prix

Formula 1 will race in Miami this week in what will be the first of 2 F1 races in the United States this season. Formula 1 has grown tremendously in the United States and in 2020 we will see 3 races on the calendar with the addition of Las Vegas. Some fans think 3 races in the states is too much, and we should prioritise other race tracks and expand to other countries. Some don't like the race track, or the fake marina which has been set up. In this video i'll explain why Miami gets so much hate and criticism, but also why you should definitely give it a chance. Enjoy!

I really think that for many of these other races, we should have a revolving calendar... maybe Vegas every two or three years. This would allow for more variation, and more unpredictability because they will be going to different tracks each season. Keep the core and historic tracks every season, like Spa, Monaco, Silverstone, and rotate some of the others... Abu Dhabi, Miami, Jeddah, etc...

I like the idea of a rotating calendar but that would imply renegotiating a lot of contracts. Some tracks in the Middle East for instance signed 10-year deals so you could well see some of those classic tracks rotating instead. Which would be terrible of course.

Interestingly this is the first new circuit in years to not be designed (or partially designed) by Hermann Tilke, which is a good thing (Tilke has given some good [Sepang, Istanbul] and bad [Abu Dubai, Sochi] circuits over the years but everyone can agree that more people should be allowed to design the tracks F1 cars race on, diversity in ideas can only be a good thing when it comes to track design).

What happened to the alternating circuits deal? When a country (i.e. Germany or Japan) has two tracks for F1, they'd alternate every year. Haven't seen that happen since the 2000's. Alternating tracks could give each season a unique taste. Imagine having driven in Suzuka, thinking the race data for that season will help win the next only to realize you're driving in Fuji this time, and the season after that you'll be back in Suzuka but the race data's already 2 years old, and by that time cars have evolved significantly so almost as if it's back to square one for you and your team. Thoughts on this?

This should absolutely be the case. Just like we had a designated European Grand Prix that would rotate between various tracks; Nurburgring, Valencia, Hockenheim, Imola, Mugello, Zandvoort etc... have an Asian Grand Prix rotation which could include, the Indian GP, South Korea, Malaysia, China, Japan ( Fuji ), and a Middle Eastern GP, where you can put Jeddah, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Turkey and possibly Azerbaijan (which has been considered a European GP and was in that rotation initially). The Americas could follow as well, Miami and Vegas could alternate.

Honestly I just don't like street circuits. I think they're too tight and often dangerous. A circuit like Jeddah promotes "good racing" only because of the inevitable safety cars. My issue with Miami and Vegas is that it became clear that the sport and the race itself aren't a priority anymore and what matters now is the show. Putting a few boats in a pond to give off a "Miami vibe" feels really fake and tacky but that's not really a problem to me. Vegas is a way worse offender imo because it was made only for getting good camera shots and selling hotel-casino tickets. I understand that street circuits became inevitable but I think they should at least rotate so we don't have to watch the teams gamble on the next safety car the whole year.

It has always been about the show. In the Bernie Eccleston era we heard it all the time. Bahrain has an oasis section, Monaco is touted for its bling despite being a dreadful track for racing, singapore came in with the first night race and fireworks at the end of the race, Abu Dhabi shortly after, Bahrain went to a night race to compete, the 3 part qualifying system was to improve the show because in the old 12 lap format there wasn't really much track action for a lot of the hour long session. Elimination quali, sprint races, new points system in 2010 to make drivers fight more, degrading tyres, drs, kers back in 09, 09 regs, 2022 regs, so many things that were done for the show. It will always be about te show because that's what people pay for

F1 always been about money and putting on a good show. difference is until 2-3 years ago f1 was stuck in the mud and in large part dying financially. Its only due to the restrictions both on the track and off (ala capped budgets for teams) as well as D2S generating a massive american contingent that F1 has jumped back into the spot light. For example, in a matter of 26 hours you could drive from Portimao to Imola, stopping at Barcelona, Paul Ricard, Monte Carlo, and Monza along the way. it’s all well and good not judging a track before we’ve seen a race or two but that’s not actually what people don’t like about Miami. it’s what the race stands for, the expansion of an already overcrowded calander, further moves away from purpose built circuits, sacrificing potential races in countries with large f1 fanbases/ Kyalami which is both a great track for racing and would take f1 to a continent that it has ignored for 30 years, and Liberty’s pursuit of money over competition

i agreed with pretty much everything you said. hit it out of the park for all i know. classic venues definitely need a place on the calendar-- they accommodate the on-track product & show off a portion of the sport that can be taken for granted by younger fans, and that obviously is history. new race dates at places like south africa also complete the calendar and truly make it a "world championship". at the same time, however, i really am keen on the idea of f1 fixing what was an almost dead relationship with the states. both miami & vegas are likely gonna wind up being crown-jewel events based on their locations alone. now, i'm a southern california native, i live 4 hours from vegas. as someone that's visited sin city twice in the last 6 years, i can tell you that a saturday night race there is a helluva lot more pleasing aesthetically compared to hosting an event 2 hours away from it. i'm primarily a nascar fan & i can tell you that it suffers from that problem. going to the clash @ the la coliseum was a culture shock for the sport because it actually had that aesthetic of racing in the heart of a massive city like la, unlike other times like when events are held an hour east from downtown. not to mention you're bringing the race to the people instead of making them drive far away to the track. overall, i think f1 really does need to teeter between the line of its past & future, because it can succeed off of both directions. they can please the diehards & longtime fans by showing up to staples like spa & monza, and also giving new fans a taste of what the sport's history is. they can also please new & potential fans by doing trendy things like miami and stuff. it brings attention & helps grow the sport. hopefully that sets the standard for what's already been a huge decade for it. it'd be a shame if one of those things don't work out because having that dynamic is a very neat characteristic that f1 hasn't seen in decades.

I have been driving the track a bit the past few days on a mod for Asetto Corsa and its actually been quite a lot of fun. The section around the stadium through to the long curved backs straight is really flowing and satisfying. I do get why there is a bit of resentment though when so many great purpose built tracks are getting no attention. The whole way Miami has been hyper marketed to try to appeal to new viewers is definitely off putting as an older fan of the sport and general motorsports fan. It feels like more of a theatrical production that would be an event you play in Forza Horizon not part of the most prestigious motorsports championship. But most of what has made F1 explode here in the US is the drama and spectacle of it which is why we are seeing so many new hybrid street tracks like this, Jeddah, Baku etc it just brings in the most attention and therefore $$.

"old fans" need to get over themselves bc new fans generate the same amount of money as old fans do anf F1 knows it. i was thinking the exact same thing...the US wants to conditon some "youths" into becoming F1 drivers XD. I even called the track a call of duty multiplayer map. Right down to the "sponsored" yacht ad/marina. Also guaranteed that any if not ALL of the us races/broadcasts were "PLANNED" on sundays that didnt include any major NBA/MLB/NFL overlap as far as viewing time slots...or PGA majors....bc thats how played out the US is honestly. So now theyre not only appealling to "new viewers" but essentially NON viewers to "digest" f1. As dipshits will be tweeting about F1 that are watching it by virtue at a bar.....etc...with the boys bc theres nothing else on to watch...F1 twitter will be inundated with shit head a plenty....crying about their "Needs/demands" being met as "FANS".

Incredibly lazy strawman. Europeans love the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Miami is not a city with a large racing culture, the track was rather sloppily built where it wasn’t even finished prior to the first race (much like Las Vegas), it was cramped, crowded and overly expensive track that doesn’t provide much excitement for drivers or audiences. It doesn’t help that Florida is either burning hot or humid, so the costumer experience isn’t great either. Honestly, Formula 1 needs to get rid of both Miami and Las Vegas. And I say this as a Floridian since both are mediocre courses. Keep Texas since it has a racing culture, great track, large venue space and services. Move another track out of the South and have it in Indianapolis or Watkins Glen in New York. Diverse regions and parts of the U.S. would make the most sense for good diversity of tracks and environments. The hate for Miami has nothing to do with the race being in America. It’s just a lousy track and greedy cash grab.

Concerning having THREE races in the US, here’s how I look at it: the US is larger than Europe, so three races is not overboard for it. They are also spread out, with one in the East, one in Central, and one in the West. While there are certain tracks I would prefer over these tracks, as well as believe we need a race in Africa for it to truly be a “World” championship, I don’t think this is excessive.

I’d love to see the F1 calendar have 10 annual tracks which would be your list plus 2 others and 20-26 rotating tracks that are raced on every 2 years. For example you could have Miami in even numbered years and Las Vegas odd numbered years. That way you could have 20-23 races a season but have 30-36 tracks that will feature over the course of 2 years.

They can't afford to attend and enjoy it and if you know U.S politics, you know communities of color are often in no position to fight something like this. Out of the classic tracks listed as must remain, I predominantly agree, my exception being Monaco, that race is out dated and whilst once my favourite 29 years ago, is now the only race I do not care if I miss watching. The Indy500 is on around that time and is much better viewing. The only other track and I'm 50/50 on, don't care if it goes, don't care if it stays is Austria, not a bad track but not massively exciting, doesn't have that appeal of extremely challenging sections, such as Spa's Eau Rouge / Radillion, Kemmel straight into Les Combes, Pouhon, Stavelot 1 & 2, Blanchimont etc. Nor does it have any sections like Silverstones Maggotts and Becketts. I think if a USA GP is to be dropped, it should be COTA in Texas. That track for me has never provided a great show in F1. MotoGP are great there, but F1, not so.

On top of that each race is located about 1500 kilometers away from each other and again they are all still very out of the way of the northern US. What I'm saying is when a race comes to a country in Europe, it's accessible to most of the residents of that country (except Russia cause it's Russia but thats not the case in the US. I do understand the argument against having this many US races especially given the lack of races in places anywhere but europe. At the end of the day F1 is a business. You can’t build 12 million dollar cars and fly them around the world with teams of people and not make any money. I had no problem dishing out the ticket price because this race is set to be more than just a race. Miami is an experience. The level of concerts, events, and fan fests have already been insane and it’s only Wednesday. The sport is of course going to sell to the highest bidder because that’s how they stay a very technical and expensive sport. If you want cheap, watch cheap sports. If you want F1, work harder, make more money, stop complaining.

As an example, when we're managing the circuit for karting, we will first draft the circuit in the simulator, then we can observe what's the entry speed, minimum speed, lap time, etc. I believe FIA has more advanced tools to do this, so they can design a new track to challenge new cars. The modern cirucits often have a wider road to accommodate the larger cars we currently have, which will also promote the chance of overtaking. However, the problem is that they remove the classic circuits for new circuits. And, we're not ready for lossing them now.

Not sure there's particular hate for the track. It's just another race in America pushed by the new owners for a sport that's always been traditionally European. The problem is not that it's a new track, but more of an issue that it'll likely replace legendary tracks of the past. There is even talk of the championship losing Spa Francorchamps & that simply can't happen. The added (& typically overdone) razzmatazz that Septics insist on should be totally unnecessary. If the sporting event itself can't excite you enough on its own strengths, then the additional BS will not improve it. Yup, I'm looking at you Superbowl (YAWN).

To be criticizing the organizers wanting to add races in America, one of the largest countries in the world by landmass, is just an ignorant argument. How about Baku, Korea, china, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Valencia ( which I actually enjoyed), the list goes on of the Ecclestone expansionist phase. any dictator with money and no soul got a race date. FFS look at the mess that is Sochi. The demand for multiple races is just due to how damn big America is. I'm on the east coast in North Carolina. Pretty much far right, and centrally aligned with the entire country. To go to Miami its I-95 all the way, I'm looking at almost 13 hours of driving at almost 900miles). Austin Texas is far worse at 1,400 miles and 21 hours of straight travel. . ---- to finish my distance discussion to drive from my home in Eastern NC to Vegas is 2,400 miles this not even a full transit of the United states with another 3ish hours of highway to go to reach LA. 2,413 miles and 36 non stop hours of driving. To wrap it up our old friend Las Vegas { let me make a pause here, I THINK VEGAS IS GOING TO BE DOPE. Every hub airport in America has daily cheap flights to Vegas, hotels is not a problem for people across the price spectrum, its a live-wire any hour city, and most importantly making the pits and infrastructure hub away from the strip means the Strip can operate with minimal disruption, ( i have to look again, i wonder if they will run one of the Strips roads backwards and make the other side serve 2 way traffic during the event?? food for thought) ... Vegas is going to be well attended by ticket holders, every eyeball in the area will be watching, it will be played in every casino and poker room floor. The TOD for Vegas prevents the Cesar's parking lot roast of the past Historic circuits should be preserved but only if they still maintain and provide for great racing. ( spa now that its finally fixing the problem of the danger on the inside of the Eau rouge complex has earned its spot, Monza with the highest speeds in F1, no brainer, Silverstone, the racing heart of the series, I would like to see a solid French Gp. Things like the redbull Hungaro ring which is only 7 fucking corners.... BLAHHH put them in a rotation.... ------------------------------- IMHO COTA is a world class track { made by taking inspiration from what makes all the other circuits great- in particular the up hill climb of spa and the Suzuki S's, the S's pay respect to the Suzuki layout with their altering radius, getting tighter in the middle and opening up as you exit the complex. Japan is up hill and to the left, America is downhill and starts with a right hander. I think they built COTA with respect and it shows. America has our great circuits ( Daytona 24 hour, Sebring 24 hour , VIR {RIP forever Oaktree..... you live on in our hearts) , Road Atlanta, all these circuits are within a 900 mile straight line on the east coast alone. Anywhere they want to put a race has to be fueled and serviced by a major commercial airport that shows extreme competency in logistics. ( This again is why Las Vegas is brilliant. That's a town of people that know how to do logistics, move huge loads , set up and take down events with military precision and do it MULTIPLE, MULTIPLE times a year. That's why i believe the hotel involved, Sorry cant place the name right now, is looking at this a a long time connection and investment instead of just a demonstration event. More like A F1 Residence in Vegas instead of a stand alone event. TLDR: America is fucking gigantic. Our infrastructure is based on interstates and air travel. Train travel is not of any noteworthy conversation and outside a few high speed corridors in the North East (Boston-NY-Washington DC.) High speed rail is just not a thing here. So people face huge amounts of time off work to drive, or flights, hotels, rental cars it just becomes such a pile on. I love the heritage of F1 but the circuits need to be worthwhile, and adaptive ( with the help from F1), we need to stop making dictator grand Prix's and focus on what's best for the sport that is the international championship of Motorsports.

Quickly - From my knowledge Spa has earned its place now that construction has been done to open the space to the left of the Eau Rouge complex stopping cars that go off Left being kicked back and across the circuit, which of course cost us Anthoine Hubert at the age of only 22. The people saying nothing could be done were full of it, we build tunnels through mountains, have a train that goes the the highest observatory in the world in the alps yet we could not change elevation and gradient on the side of a Belgium hillside.... I agree with you on almost everything. My first GP I attended was Zandvoort 1955 (5 yr old) followed by 1965. I haven to many tracks around the world and have a special passion for some of the old traditional ones and Spa leads the way. What should be implemented is a system whereby for example oil rich countries hosting a GP should pay a premium in order to subsidize places like Kyalami and other traditional tracks that cannot afford to host one on their own. Places like Anderstorp, Clermont Ferrand etc etc.

For me personally it's not even the fact that we are having another American race. With Liberty Media being the overloads idm. But for me I see this GP as an entire money spinner built for profit with the racing being a secondary factor. In a country that has a race already and has other tracks that F1 has raced at which are still around. Rather than making another Cesars Palace GP but modernised. & the fact the marketing from the official F1 channel bascially treated Vegas as the Monaco replacement honestly left a really bad taste in my mouth personally. If you like this races Sam and anyone else good for you. But for me these destination races I've never been a fan especially the street ones. If you want street racing action there's Monaco and Formula E. If we have too many street tracks it will dilute the speciality of them thus making the calendar much more uninteresting.
