Evolution doesn’t fix things - it reinvents them. A biologist explains:

Esteemed biologist Michael Levin explores a captivating biological perspective of evolution - one that’s hard for engineers to come to terms with. In their work, making random changes to a system usually makes things worse, not better.
But evolution, on the other hand, doesn't just produce specific solutions to specific challenges; instead, it creates what Levin calls "problem-solving machines." These machines are made up of hierarchical biological hardware with incredible adaptability, capable of tackling various challenges without assuming specific environmental conditions.
Contrary to commonly held ideas about evolution, it doesn't just search for the best possible physical characteristics in organisms. It also uses signals and behaviors to shape how organisms function, so when things change or get damaged, the different parts of an organism can continue to function. From metabolic to physiological dilemmas, Levin highlights evolution’s remarkable ability to adapt.

thanks for the explanation - as a designer i know the power of accidents, but also the limitations of choice. Evolution has always seemed to be discussed as if there was choice taking place rather than mostly chance over huge numbers of iterations - however this conversation suggests that if not choice there is certainly something in the way the system is structured that will tend toward certain types of response

I don't think that evolution is the right word to describe what's going on here. He talks about things that happen to all existing species. The system has been designed to tell cells where to go because the end goal is known. And, it's natural selection that makes slight variations (within limits) to the genes in the cell in question.

Evolution seems to be blind and random. However, this is due to our lack of knowledge, It is now clear that the process of Evolution was determined and tightly controlled by Quantum mechanics, the information coded in the evolution process was the software which provided the guardrails for a very determined outcome. Some of us take a very simplistic view, they simply see the "How" of the process and fail to see the "Why" ? A three billion code in the DNA is an incredibly engineered piece of software, Think about it !! The Ig Bang was an explosion of massive amount of energy, an explosion is supposed to create chaos and disorder rather than beauty, symmetry, and order, A three billion code software emerging out of a blast in which we are still in the midst of, leading to incredibly well regulated / tightly controlled fundamental forces of nature, The biological evolution is a tiny, tiny part of the cosmological Evolution, The anthropic argum

@@ronaldmorgan7632 in a sense maybe you could go for a "mathematical" layer behind all that, but still, I don't think it's wrong to say that evolution also "favors" organism and "parts" which themselves play well with evolution. So it would be a huge evolutionary advantage for a cell if its parts were kinda individually competent, and for a multicellular organism for its cells to be individually competent, etc. So I can see a sense in which things would evolve to be "evolvable", you know?

Love this guy. And love the path this channel (and Big Think) is taking. Like The Well of old? Embracing the collective, uplifting the ordinary to divine. Meditation or psychedelics - they both get people to realise the contradictory truth that nothing and everything matters. The smallest, most without senses organism is smarter, less confused by reality, and can see the bigger picture, forward and backward in time, than the large, multi-sensory mammal that is rooted to the present and the overload of senses it has to deal with. Does this give the higher organism more agency, in Levin's words? Yes, and that's probably it. More variables affected in the block universe where the end calculation is already known.

i think theres even a phenomenon whence the mind can grow parts of the body through focus and mere intentional thinking. ive somehow reconnect the body and my brain but in my experience, its only the right side of my body. when i was into it, meaning so in-depth in my body/mind connection or interoception i was able to acutely sense tendrils of energy traveling through my nerves in whichever part if i focus my attention to it. imagine if we can really enhance this capability and able to grow muscles without exercising or grow limbs and whatnot. but the latter requires more than mere thinking alone. we dont have the software to do that yet. what i do know for a fact, experentially speaking is that we can get inside the body and command. i once experienced inducing peristalsis, altering my metabolism through breathing and somewhat experienced remote viewing and telepathy. the end bit is true because information was confirmed and i was amused to say the least.

Excellent presentation of the power of design to solve problems at all levels. AI is not yet at the level of the cell in problem solving. The problem I have with your explanation is that evolution is a process guided by random chance and environmental pressure. How does it manage to create with such design over millions of years without fore knowledge of what the needs will be. All the evidence points to intelligence being behind the design of these cells with problem solving ability.

It's amazing how, even after all the incredible machines humanity was able to create with their mind and their techniques, the most complex, adaptable and perfect of all systems are still the bodies of living organisms. Something so great, it's beyond our abilities to replicate. One might even argue this as proof of a God who designed us, as only a being greater than us could create machines greater than ours. But I, personally, don't have this faith, and instead I'm blown away that all of this is a product of randomness and time. A long, long time.

Even as a high school student, I never was convinced that mere random mutations could produce such a wonderful world of living beings. Darwin's theory assumes that mutations lead to only two types of traits. Ones that favour survival and those that lead to extinction. Between the two, there are countless traits that random mutations can produce which favour neither. We should have had many features that are not particularly useful. Where as every living thing seems to have evolved with such purposeful , effecient and elegant design. There can be only one answer, intelligence. I am not invoking god. Definitely, the universe has abundance of intelligence. Physicists will never agree because it won't fit their models of the universe.

There are currently no known examples, in nature or science, where one life form will convert to a different life form (i.e. different body plan) by change in the DNA. Current understanding in the field of genetics seems to indicate that varying body plans (for example, the difference between an octopus and praying mantis) do not reside within the DNA. Genes within the DNA of a particular organism code for the different proteins required to build and allow that particular organism to function but has not been shown to determine that particular organism's primary biological architectural body plan. Therefore, no amount of random mutation of DNA will produce a new organism with a different body plan from the original.

That seems like a big jump to conclusions. Dna only dictates the production of proteins, but maybe these proteins go on to trigger chemical reactions that will make the cells behave in specific patterns that defines a species

Carbohydrate chains come in different lengths, and biologically important carbohydrates belong to three categories: monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides RNA ribonucleic acid, a nucleic acid present in all living cells. Its principal role is to act as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins, although in some viruses RNA rather than DNA carries the genetic information. Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long chains. There are 20 different types of amino acids that can be combined to make a protein now these work in a system Systems chemistry is the science of studying networks of interacting molecules, to create new functions from a set (or library) of molecules with different hierarchical levels and emergent properties. Dear Dr. Levin You just said in your above clip at 3.50, "That is nowhere in the DNA, That comes to us from wherever the laws of Mathematics comes from", It is now a well researched conclusion that the laws of Mathematics are discovered rather than invented, The laws of mathematics is the language which is the only language which can describe the laws of nature, The language of mathematics is discovered because it was present from the time the Cosmic Evolution started, which eventually led to biological evolution ( Anthropic Principle), Mathematics is one of the creations of God which helps us to comprehend our Glorious and Magnificent Creator "God". The evolution is simply the discovery of the process by which God created this wonderful tapestry of species with the humans being the Crown Jewel, The unique trait which makes us the Crown jewel of all of Gods creation is our ability to think and comprehend the incomprehensible, As Albert Einstein once remarked " The most incomprehensible thing about the Universe is that it is comprehensible", This ability could not have come from evolution at all as it is from a divine source which created mathematics, Mathematics is a divine tool through which we are able to comprehend the universe which is full of pointers / signs which ultimately lead the the Magnificent, Glorious and Omnipotent and All Knowing God !! The incredible energy which spurted out of the Big Bank was not just "Energy", but rather, information loaded / precisely programed software based on mathematics, this is what Quantum Mechanics is all about, The Entire process of Evolution starting from the Cosmic Evolution right upto Biological Evolution is tightly controlled and directed through Quantum Entanglement, We think the process was random and blind because of our very limited knowledge about Quantum mechanics and Quantum Entanglement, once we progress further it will become apparently clear that the entire Cosmic evolution is 💯controlled and directed.

Lightning/rivers/ work by division trees, sand dunes are accumulative particle physics, mountains are plates crumpling upward while simultaneously being eroded by water. The movements of the planets in this system following the star that orbits the galactic core, creates a spiral, orbiting in an ellipse. Biology is nothing but a manifestation of principles of physics, and everything is made of fractals.

It is too bad that living cells do not continue down to the smallest size; if it did we could perhaps engineer robots that could transform us through some processs into living space and thereby be invincible like spirits.

Large brains (in relation to body size) Vision more important than sense of smell. Hands adapted for grasping. Long life spans and slow growth. Few offspring, usually one at a time. Complex social groups. And tool usage All primates have these traits but not the tool usage it is a trait of the great apes Or search up the image on Google gutsick gibbon skull Evolution it looks like humans Evolution right here or you could just not look it up but if you do look it up can you tell me what is human and what is an Ape

It’s not true that we don’t have an explanation for anything, unless you have radically redefined the word explanation.

Science has chosen the word evolution to replace god. Replace GOD with every time he says evolution and it fits perfectly and makes sense perfectly. You can’t have an intelligent design without an intelligent designer.

@@DaughterApollo well then why is it that the study of Astronomy says the universe is 12 billion years old in the Bible says well 6000 The Bible says whales are fish and bats are birds and locus and that you shouldn’t wash your hands because the reason why you’re getting sick is because you’re using a foul mouth you believe that God could send plagues of raining frogs do you believe that you will go to an imaginary place when you die because you are scared of death😆 The Bible says that Noah got two of every species of land animal so like 7000 something they’re saying nowadays but if creationism was true then no one would bring everything on the ark what’s going to survive in the flood you tell me and the best wooden boat makers in the world British they made a ship called the Wyoming about 300 feet long including the whatever the it’s called the log on front and they Brain it out one day with 14 men and it started twisting in a lot of weird directions The water leaked through and all 14 men died and the Wyoming was built with almost a whole iron skeleton but Noah’s ark couldn’t even use nails rivets or screws because of you know Jesus got crucified with big ol nails and you know what they used to build it just put some pitch over it on the inside and out💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 And if the ark Had that much animals in it the Bible said it had one window all of the animals would die from methane poisoning so no do not relate your magic story book with science😭😭😭💀💀
