It’s impossible to keep track of what egg cartons at the supermarket even mean. What’s the real difference between cage-free, free-range, and pasture-raised eggs? Are hens actually living better lives? Well, there’s a catch.
These companies use clever marketing tactics and carefully selected wording to trick you into paying more for your eggs, and finding actual humanely raised chickens requires an extra effort from you (and your wallet).
In this video, we dive into the world of supermarket labels and the hidden truths behind terms like Cage-Free, Free-Range, Organic, Certified Humane, and more egg-related terms that aren't exactly what you might they they are.

There is another option that is both cheap AND humane... Just drive outside of city limits and keep your eyes peeled for the millions of roadside signs that all us small farmers put in our yards saying we sell our eggs. I'm 20 minutes outside a major city in the Midwest and every other house out here has delicious, backyard eggs for sale for a dirt cheap $3-5 a carton.

Honestly this is going to be your best option if you want to eat eggs. My sister raises her own chickens and loves them like no other. Unfortunately, if your chickens are producing eggs everyday, then it means that they were genetically modified and sold by factory farms anyway. Please, if you have your own hens, allow them to eat their own eggs so they can receive the nutrients lost while producing way more eggs than they naturally otherwise would!

Aldi carries certified humane pasture-raised, and they're under $4 a dozen

If it is under $4 a dozen in a store it is not pasture raised. The business model is unsustainable at those prices

@@jrpotter9659 Nope it's BOTH certified Humane AND pasture-raised. It's Aldi lol. I'm super cynical but I really doubt they can get away with saying that as the core part of their packaging if it's a straight-up lie? Esp with the certified humane stamp
@jrpotter9659

@@TrixMiddlekauff Who awards the stamp? I do not trust labeling since a lot of those certifications are nothing more than the producer having paid enough to a company to get the stamp. Pasture raised on a package is unregulated. You should find out where these eggs are sourced from, and I mean specific farms and actually find out the practices. You will probably be disappointed.

@@jrpotter9659 I don't know what you want - I'm doing my best on a budget. It's the Certified Humane raised and Handled label + pasture raised. 🤷‍♀

Thank you. Great and thorough explanation. I did find an organic Free Range version. It costs about twice as much but I love chickens and can live with eating fewer eggs. A small (very) contribution to the world.

In EU the definitions are clearly written in terms of space and environment. The US definitions are like any American contract - vague and open to many interpretations and open to criminality.

I can’t stand the vegetarian fed label. Chickens are NOT vegetarians! Stop trying to change a species diet! (Including humans, we are not vegans or vegetarians)

Sorry buddy I'm not spending $10 for a carton of eggs. Eggs used to be dirt cheap. But all of you people that wanted to save the world bumped up the prices. Figure out how to bring the price down and more people will help you save the world.

You have missed the point entirely. Eggs have been kept “cheap” by increasing the production, which is really only possible by inhumane treatment of the animals. Your argument could be applied to coal prices going up because of child labor laws, or getting your phone cheaper if China used more imprisoned political prisoners. Just saying
