Contrary to popular belief, women cannot follow the same health and fitness protocols as men and expect to see the same results. Unlike men, women in their reproductive years have their hormones to take care of, and their rise and fall throughout the month impact everything from energy to focus, mood, metabolism, and the ability to adapt to good-for-you stressors like exercise or fasting.
Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with holistic health expert, and one of the world’s leading experts on fasting, Dr. Mindy Pelz to talk about the benefits of fasting and how women, in particular, can cultivate a fasting routine in a way that honors their hormones.
They also discuss the menstrual cycle and life phases that would benefit from fasting the most and when to pump the breaks on longer fasts and fasting in general (e.g., pregnancy, breastfeeding, eating disorders, and thyroid conditions).
Dr. Mindy Pelz is a renowned holistic health expert and one of the leading voices in educating women about their hormonal health. She has empowered hundreds of thousands of people around the world to tap into their bodies’ innate healing abilities through her “5-Step Approach,” which uses fasting, personalized nutrition, stress management, chemical detoxification, and lifestyle changes to optimize health and slow the aging process.
Dr. Mindy is on a mission to start a women’s health revolution. Her private coaching group, The Reset Academy, teaches women how to sync a fasting lifestyle with their hormones. She is the author of three bestselling books-The Menopause Reset, The Reset Factor, and The Reset Kitchen-and her members-only Facebook group, The Resetter Collaborative, includes over 50,000 active members who regularly participate in Dr. Mindy’s exclusive monthly “Fast Training Week” programs. Her newest book, Fast Like A Girl, is a definitive guide for women everywhere to harness the benefits of fasting while making sure they are supporting and caring for their hormones throughout the different stages of their cycle and throughout perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.
In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Mindy dive into:
-Top misconceptions around fasting as a tool for women
-The impact of estrogen and progesterone on fasting
-Why women should approach fasting differently than men
-How rising progesterone levels impact fasting leading up to menstruation
-The impact of perimenopause and menopause on fasting protocols
-Why it’s important for women to personalize fasting
-The benefits you can get from fasting beyond losing weight
-The “do’s” of a prolonged fasting window
-The “don’ts” of prolonged fasting
-How to properly break a fast
-A few testimonials from Dr. Mindy’s clients
-Where you can follow and learn more about Dr. Mindy’s work

I used to get them at Whole Foods in the USA, but I couldn't find them there online today, so I don't know if they are on back order or what. But when you find them, they come with a filling of either almond butter, hazelnut butter, or coconut butter, and all three are equally delicious, IMHO.

I have been fasting for 4 years. I have lost over 100 pounds. I feel great. I drink a lot of water. I make sure that I eat at least 1200 calories a day. I work five days a week. I eat once a day on workdays, twice a day on my days off. I make sure that I fast for at least 16 hours. I don’t deprive myself of what my body needs. I don’t starve myself. I’m now down to my ideal weight. I went from a size 18 to a size 4 in jeans.

This last just some green leaf veggies that you can boil and some fish boiled better than any other way when done some olive oil. When you'll be confortable with 3 meals jump to 2 ... at 9am and 3 pm (give or take). In the begining you'll need some planning and self-awareness.

Thanks Mindy for the wonderful explanations. I’m 72 and never felt like having breakfast, even as a child. In my family we had early diner, at 6 pm. I had lunch at about 1 or 2 in the afternoon as the first meal. I still eat that way, when I am by myself and all the hormones seemed okay, all my life, 4 pregnancies and breastfeeding, menopause. Maybe when we simply listen to our bodies and eating healthy food is just a pleasure. Greetings from France

This CD has three separate relaxation/meditation sessions on it kzfaq.infoUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq guided by a very pleasant and direct male voice. Unlike so many other products of its type, this CD does not have bad synthesizer music, does not feature a phony or affected style of narration, and does not make any bogus claims to be subliminal or to re-train the brain or any of that balderdash. What you get is 1. a guided meditation for getting into a pleasantly relaxed state of body awareness while taking a stroll (superb for those easing back into a fitness routine slowly after an illness or injury) 2. A nice long breath-awareness relaxation session that if followed diligently can put you into very deep states of full-body relaxation and mental calmness, and 3. a buddhist-inspired meditation session designed to help you develop and maintain feelings of loving kindness toward not just yourself and your friends, but toward people you don't even like. The CD makes no claims to be designed for advanced meditators or for buddhists or hindus/yoga practitioners looking for very deep and esoteric stuff. It is geared more toward the average person who just wants to develop the habit of relaxation and stress relief through natural, healthy means. him, if you happen to be reading this, keep up the good work fella, and I love your accent. I would also like to note that I have never fallen asleep while listening to this product. I would like to kindly suggest to the reviewer who said this CD makes him fall asleep, that he might want to get checked to see if he has a sleep disorder, or if he is simply not setting aside ample time for restful sleep at night. A healthy person getting adequate rest at night should be able to go into deep states of mental relaxation without dozing off, if not all the time, then most of the time.

Finally, someone explains why women crave chocolate and ice cream at times in their monthly cycle. It’s nice to know it’s a natural thing and not just in our heads. We do, as women, need to be careful not to over eat during those times, but it is nice to know it wasn’t something we did that was wrong. My weight gain came in my sixties! And it’s hard to get rid of it now. I didn’t really gain weight in my forties.

Good for you. I was thin most of my life until my forties. I had to have my gall bladder removed and that has really made it difficult to lose weight. I did keto and did lose weight,but it gets so old not having real food. Now I do enjoy my cheat day and I usually stick to the 16:8 routine. I'm now 53 and I menopause, but I still struggle to keep the 16:8 schedule some weeks. And I crave chocolate like crazy at times and at other times it is easy.

@@annmarieknapp2480 I think maintaining a decent weight and a decent figure is hard for most women once they hit mid forty. I worked out about twice a month with a fitness trainer since my mid forties, that helped, but so did dieting after each holiday to lose the pounds gained during that holiday. I also did KETO. But I did it in my sixties. It is the best diet for me to lose weight, but in my case, it was also a huge reduction in the amount of food I ate, because I limited myself primarily to eggs, nuts, meat and certain vegetables. I did snacked on meat sometimes. But I cannot lose my middle. I have more of what my father called a “matronly shape”. Which I dislike. I don’t know how to dress it because I never had to work around this stomach that now sticks out. Ugh! I hate it. I am not huge, but when someone is used to looking and dressing a particular way, it is difficult to accept that they can no longer have that look anymore. Well, congrats on working towards your best body. Keep up the good fight. 😀. Hopefully it will pay off as you get old and you will be healthy and mobile well into old age.

And I retain water like crazy so I feel like the Michelin Man! But the week after my period I slowly shrink back down as my appetite wains & water releases. If that part didn't happen I would trying to starve myself through it. Because of it, though, I always knew that my cycle binges were something my body needed more than it didn't. Thank you so much for confirming this! I know I need to reign it in a little bit & not go so crazy, but the confirmation that I'm normal & probably giving my body more of what it needs than it doesn't during my cycle is a huge relief to me. I’m now doing ADF.. now I just need to personalize it to my cycle. Being a woman can be absolutely exhausting. I would tell my bf that what works for him doesn’t work for me, he can do a workout plan and eating plan and drop 20lbs in a month and I can do the same and the scale not move. Our hormones play the biggest part in our day to day life, something that he really doesn’t have to worry about. It also changes how we define “staying consistent “ with an eating or fasting plan.

A beautiful message for women and so sad that our education on our own bodies and how we can take care of ourselves is so lacking. Women have been neglected and viewed as neurotic for so long in the medical system too. We need to honor our monthly cycle and ups and downs its kindof like the seasons theres a time for summer where were super active and busy, all the way through to winter the end of the cycle where we need to rest and feed ourselves nourish ourselves. It's so nice to know this all normal and if more women knew this there would be a lot less shame around these behaviours that we wanna do anyway.

Dr. Mindy has been a font of knowledge for me. As a woman with PCOS I can vouch for everything she's saying about females fasting differently. There are days in a month when I can go hungry easily, do 24 hour fasts or 20 or 18 hour fasts. Other times I know I need to eat, it's like my body's screaming at me to nourish it. I try to "feast" as Dr. MINDY talks about. If I'm overly zealous with fasting I start spotting and my cycle goes all over the place.

I was active as a child , active in my 20s , worked out almost every day in my 30s , reasonably fit in my 40s and then in my 50s menopause hit and although I didn’t look fat I certainly wasn’t as lean and fit as I wanted especially around the belly . Then I discovered intermittent fasting and the first place that started to shrink was my belly . I’m loving this lifestyle , I do some resistance work but figuring out when to eat and what to eat is essential to keep my weight down and I look and feel so much better.

EXCEELNT interview. I am 64 and have done IF for about 4 years most days of the week at 14-17 hours. I tried my first water fast this past October for about 56 hours. It was fairly easy for me and I did plenty of research beforehand to make the most of it. I drank unflavored Pedialyte along with filtered water. After coming off the fast I had incredible energy, lost a couple pounds, and appreciated food even more. It honestly felt like a "reset". It helped clear my eczema and gave me a whole new perspective on fasting. I plan on doing it again this month - can't wait :)

32:41 this story made me cry, bc I feel the same…I’ve fasted a ton in my life, lost and gained 100s of pounds. I’m 51…I’ve always been active, had my 4th child at 40, then life began to fall apart. Divorce, death, loss was everywhere I turned and then, I quit trying about 4 yrs ago. I didn’t go to the doctor bc they wouldn’t look at me they only saw my weight. So, that was that, until the last 8-10 months. Ive stayed in a state of exhaustion, in pain w/migraines etc. 4m ago I discovered the pain issue and have to have oral surgery. Last week I found out my blood sugar is over 300. I cry bc I can see how my body has been screaming for help and I wasn’t listening. This episode has and will change my life. I had no idea of the timing but it makes perfect sense!!! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to start a fasting window immediately….I love there is something I can do NOW as I await your book for study. Someone said you need same time to lose your fat as you needed to gain it. Same someone also said that every pound of fat is a body memory of your history, so with every pound you lose you give away some history of yours. Your body wants to keep the memories embedded with those pounds. Maybe it helps to write down your history in a book so you can lose the pounds and keep the book. 4 pounds in one year is fine as it will stay away when you lost it very slowly. The important thing is to lose the 4 pounds around your belly and this is sooo difficult.

You may not read this comment and if you do you may or may not remember that you very graciously hosted many many death and dying dinner parties in several of your LA spaces. I will always remember your generosity of Spirit, kindness and willingness to serve from your heart. Shine on brother.

Gosh you are the best Dr Pelz. I loved that story about the 300lb guy. I’ve been following you for ages, and started to do 72 hour water fasts while following your channel. I’m used to omad/keto/intermittent fasting already. On my second round of 72s water fast and the mental clarity Omg it’s like I’m using my brain correctly for the first time 😮 much appreciated for everything you do. Thank you

Wow! I’ve never heard of this guy before and came here because of Mindy but he’s fantastic!! Dhru asked literally every question I had. I was thinking what about women in menopause and he asked that. I was wondering if it’s worse to cut out breakfast rather than dinner because I actually much prefer to skip breakfast and he asked that. I wanted to know several specific questions and he asked every one and I got the answers served up on a silver platter. And of course Dr. Pelz is always so good! Great interview!! Thank you both! I am adding her book to my shopping cart now that I’m in menopause and need to figure out how to time my feeding window. Subscribed!!

Made a horrible mistake doing 30 days water fasting without understanding my cycle. At day 26, I had to break my fast because I knew something was wrong. I had intense craving in the last stages (which was odd to me), missed my period that month( wasn’t sexually active), couldn’t sleep through the night, had a really annoyed temper and didn’t want no-one to talk to me. I researched fasting for women and discovered Dr.Mindy and was blown away when I got the full understanding of how women should fast. I immediately downloaded the Flo app to get a better understanding of my cycle and never fast the week before my period.

However with the state of the med profession the last 4 years or so and their choreographed dancing on tiktok, including their absolute reliance on pharmaceuticals, it has eroded people's trust. Thank God for dedicated medical professionals and researchers who pro actively share their knowledge on Google and here on KZfaq.

I would recommend adding salt to your black coffee if you're going to drink it while fasting. I've found that I crave food after drinking black coffee just because caffeine causes sodium to release from the body cells. Adding the salt really stifles bacon/sausage cravings. 🙂

Great talk. I thought I knew most things about fasting, but I just learned so much about women’s hormones that I have never heard about. How can we be this uneducated about our bodies when it’s so important? This info should be in every human biology and sex education class, not the garbage that won’t help anyone to be healthier.

This was SO good. Many aha moments. I learned about water fasting via listening to Dr. Alan Goldhamer about 6-7 years ago and I did a 25 day water fast on my own. It was amazing. I've done smaller water fasts since then. I have a daughter who struggles with infertility problems (meanwhile, her younger sister just had her fifth child.) told her, the older daughter, about the testimonial Dr Pelz spoke of near the end of the interview. I ordered her book today. Can't wait to read it and then hand it off to my daughter to read. Dr Dhru, I am trying to binge-watch all your videos. You are a great interviewer. I appreciate you and your guests.

🖤fasting🖤great interview and information, thank you! I started fasting intermitently a while ago but back then I took it to some kind of "anorexia" level, wasn't informed enough, just felt my body needed this reboot/cleaning from all these empty calories I consumed through day. Started as bulimia, then anorexia because first didn't feel well or healthy at all...So good that now you can find this information from health experts and researches about how good fasting can be when done properly. We, humans, tend to consume more calories than what we burn... and this with a sedentary life, junk-food and no burning plan is the start to many health problems

I am currently on 16:8 and have done the 72-hour fast twice - the second one was when I was able to properly refeed myself. Listening to this interview truly amazes. We have really become more advanced in understanding the minute details of how our body responds to fasting. I saw another video of this doctor who went through a 72-hour fast, but was drinking bone broth in the process. This interview explains why - it’s not what we ingest, but whether or not it will spike our blood sugar, that’s enough to break our fast.
@oolala53

The bone broth negated the fast, right?

Angel Wolcott. So did the bone broth spike blood sugar or not?
@oolala53
@oolala53 Жыл бұрын
@@almaburns6562 I don’t think it has to spike glucose to negate a fast. Vaulter Longo, an expert on fasting, especially as preparation for cancer treatment, talks about nutrient-sensing pathways. I believe those can be activated irrespective of glucose spikes. Protein above a small amount triggers them. And not all rises are spikes.

I actually haven’t tried it yet for fear that it would break my fast, but this is what they have been saying. When I did my 72, I prepared 2L electrolyte water and green tea. I sipped on my coffee and sparkling water throughout the day thinking of them as my “dessert” then kept myself busy with walking, work, reading, etc.
@oolala53
@oolala53 Жыл бұрын
@@angelwalcott2437 Was the 2L electrolytes per day? Your plan sounds about as generous as could still keep the benefits. When people try to game the system much more. there’s no telling if they actually get the good effects. Seems like a pretty big gamble.

Thanks for doing this interview! Dr. Pelz is so clear and helpful. I started 16:8 IF (20:00-12:00) 2 weeks ago, and felt like I was doing great. Not even that hungry. Last night I decided to try expanding my window to 18:6 and cut myself off at 18:00. I woke up this morning and was surprised at how drained and shaky I was! I ended up tapping out at 8:30am and I couldn't figure out why there was such a big difference. Just happened to find this on youtube a few hours later and I realized I'm 4-5 days away from my period. Sorry if that's TMI, that's just amazing timing. I also just learned a lot of things about hormones I never knew. I will definitely be looking at Dr. Pelz's recommendations from now on.👍Thank you thank you!
