We Filipinos stay poor because: 1. We dont plan for the future; retirement, having a family, kids education etc. We live for the day. 2. We have a mentality that money is the root of evil and rich people are bad. 3. We dont set boundaries and cant say no to our family/relatives because we dont want to be seen as "matapobre". 4. We have this mentality of "utang na loob" that everything that was provided for us a as a child should be paid back when we have the means.

They don’t care about the persons goals and dreams just as long as they are financially supported even if it brings an end to that person’s hopes and dreams. But something happened that made me realized,people you’ve helped are not really appreciating what you’ve done for them.To make the story short,this year I’m no longer sending money to make them realized my worth as a person.No matter what you do for them,they don’t appreciate.God knows I’ve given so much for them but it’s time for me to move on and cut ties.I’m not a walking ATM machine.They will only realized the importance of someone when they are gone.I still give for big occasions though and birthdays.

I hope this reaches all Filipinos. Most of us are too dumb to even consider these ideas. That's why I personally hate our own culture. It's dumb and it needs to change. Even my own parents kept telling us since we were children to study hard to get a good job so we could help them financially which is a noble way to honor them but was totally a twisted way of thinking. They stopped trying to improve their finances in hopes of us pulling them up in the future and this was the exact same case with their own parents. It's a never ending cicle of puberty which I'm striving to end. Just sharing

The biggest reason why Filipinos will not get rich is due to lack of entrepreneurship. We don't take risks in fear of failure. We are satisfied with a status quo and content to being just a worker as long as there's a steady income to count on. It pains me to say this but Filipinos are subservient. We rather take orders from foreigners than fellow Filipinos. Chinese businesses thrive in our country because they know our weakness

This is why I have no plans on giving anything to lazy family members. Not even a single peso. Not being selfish but money is earned not given. Although I do thank my parents for allowance because they're hard-working yeah they deserve the cash. But the rest? **** no! I strongly agree with teaching people how to fish and not giving them fish.

It's funny that I found this video days after asking my mom how much she has in her bank account, considering that 3 of her kids have already graduated college. She told me that it's hard making more because she's supporting her and my dad's relatives :( What's so sad is that her and my dad's siblings also kept asking for support. My mom has always been a progressive thinker. She said she'd rather die young because she sould hate to be a burden to us when she's old. She also wants us to keep the money we earn to ourselves.

I agree to his message because my aunt who works as a nurse here in the US has sent thousands of dollars to my cousins in the Philippines for them to have a good education, but all of them wasted her money because some got pregnant and dropped out and they keep asking for money instead finding another source of income.

Most Filipinos are Catholic . The church teaches them to be followers and not leaders , which almost guarantees they won't become wealthy . If by chance they do become wealthy nevertheless , the Church teaches they must share the wealth until they are no longer wealthy . Only a few are exempted from this rule . The Church teaches the select few wealthy are that way because God wills it . All Catholic societies operate this way .

I'm a Filipino and I thank you for sharing your insight and perspective to us. Sometimes we get blinded because we get so used to the environment, that we need someone from outside to give us a little perspective and open our eyes. I think this whole giving money to family/friends problem is a *boundary problem.* Filipinos don't have healthy boundaries with regards to financial matters. Instead of giving opportunities, we money. We are doing something for them that they can and need to do themselves. When we do that, they get unnecessarily dependent. It's a lose-lose situation. Giving them opportunities instead will help them grow. Giving them money is like being an overprotective/over-caring parent to a child -- the child will not develop and grow, and they get dependent on you. 1 time i stop sending money to my parents. My father cursed me "pisti ka wala kay utang na loob". When infact i am the only sibling who sends the biggest money to my parents. Its very toxic and now i stop talking to my dad. I understand that he also grow in this situation but he should have learn how traumatic it is to be in this position.

I'm Filipino myself and this is sadly the truth. My great-grandfather was poor with 10 children but earned enough money to buy land and make a profit from it to send his kids to school and their children and now my generation.

One more thing if you do receive money for help, instead of spending it blindly. Figure out how to make that money grow so you can stop asking for more money. Start a business with that money. Apparently this video was just featured on the Filipino TV show IT'S SHOWTIME. ...From what I'm told the host Vice Ganda said "Well Filipinos are rich because we have close families". Miss Ganda, I guess you didn't get the point I was making. Giving your family constant handouts is not in their best interest. It's actually often bad for them. I have 5 siblings and we are all very close. Closer than any 6 siblings I know of. They're my best friends. You can have both a "rich" family life and a rich financial one. They aren't mutually exclusive. I keep receiving comments saying "You obviously aren't close with your family." ...I have the closest group of family and friends of anyone I know. That's partly because we don't make financial demands on each other, or use "utang na loob/debt of gratitude" to guilt trip each other into giving each other money. They could say "no" if I asked for financial assistance and I would respect that. Many have. The same goes for them asking me. We love and respect each other enough that it's OK if we say no to each other. Sometimes we also say "yes". I give people money and things quite often in extreme situations. I also give people gifts, just because I want to. I give gifts because it makes me feel good. Giving a gift like a present is for the giver more than the receiver. Giving is great. But giving people/family money when they are not in dire need of it (extreme situations) is generally NOT GOOD FOR THEM. Supporting them financially, even sending them to college, is usually a bad thing for that person in the long run. People don't appreciate what they don't work for, and they don't learn from things they don't work for. I don't not give my family money because I don't love them. I love my family more than anything in the world. I love them enough to not give them handouts. I could, but that wouldn't actually make their lives better. It would just make their lives easier/lazier. Instead I provide my family with love, opportunities, guidance, my time ...and occasionally even loan them money to start businesses, but those are on very select occasions. In the Philippines parents often send their children to school to get a job literally for the purpose of that child getting a job to take care of the parent, or the whole rest of the family if they end up being "the successful one". It's a vicious cycle, and guilt is the reason those children give and give. I know this because I've been written by hundreds of these young people since posting this video. They feel trapped. Many don't comment publicly on FB or YT and instead write me direct messages because they are worried their family will see their comment if they show their agreement publicly. These children know and tell me that if they don't give large portions of their salary to their parents or family members their family will call them names and say they don't remember where they came from. It's awful, and unfortunately happens a lot, and it's excused because it's "culture", and it needs to be fixed.

The reason why I don’t talk or chat more often to my families back home, all i hear from them are complaints, my grandma’s medicine, bill etc.. so tired of hearing them but at the end of the day i felt guilty and end up sending money. I said let me listen to you this video again "Why Filipinos Don't Get Rich" I said this guy must have a lots guts or lots of compassion with Filipinos to make such a daring messages. what you said is spot on, sad but it's true. Also, one reason why a lot of Filipinos (especially those who came from the poorest of the poor family) don't get rich is that the parents themselves are holding back their kids on their dreams. They have this attitude where if you're born poor, then you'll die poor. Some of them like to use the "lack of education" as an excuse to stay poor, even though there are a lot of public schools and organizations that are giving away free school supplies and scholarships.

Some of my friends, family and relatives only remember me when they needed money. Not even a single “Hi” or “Hello”, just straight, “Bro, baka pwede makahiram ng pera.” They don’t even greet me on my birthday. 😢😢 And even if you gave them money because you want to help, they wanted more, and more, and more, like they believe money grows on trees. Like it is unlimited. They don’t know how hard I try to earn that money. That is the mentality in the Philippines. I’m sorry but that is the truth and it hurts.

What you're saying is real and genuine. Our roots are stuck on this cycle, thinking that their kids are their future investments. Sadly even our sole parent don't know how to earn and handle money well. Me and my siblings are stepping forward to break the cycle.

Most of us Filipinos are too afraid to take risks. We're too afraid to try out new things because of the possibility that we'll lose something somehow. We're stuck in our old ways. Why are we not rich? Because we've been doing the same things over and over. We graduate with degrees but we can't even find a job. If we get a job then we're contented. We're stuck in our comfort zones. And the only way to grow and make our lives better is to step out of our comfort zones.

This is so true. However, i think the problem is, some of the people (i know, not all) that are being helped, don't help themselves as well. They just dont try and would rather just sit around and wait for the provider to give them money. And worst, some are even the ones that spend the supposed money for food and necessities to waste. Having said this, i want to also mention the environment & maybe even the culture sometimes - the lack of desire to dream big (if you do, it's got a stigma of being "ambisyoso" or "ambisyosa" or in English "too ambitious" and the fact that, that's become a cultural thing to say when someone has some big life goals, speaks volumes about where people's mindsets are at. Cuz i find that most people's life goals are set on certain levels that would be more attainable for their situation. If there are more exposure though to people like yourself or western mindsets when it comes to ceasing opportunities & being aggressive about making life better, i think it would be eye opening for Filipinos.

As the oldest sibling of a widowed Filipino mother and the only male born and raised in the U.S. I didn’t even realize this was so common or an actual thing in Filipino culture until recently. And this guy is absolutely right. I make the most money and would’ve been able to support myself and live on my own for several years now but a significant portion of my income goes to my mom and my sister’s rent that they can’t afford. My cousins are i. The same position- my aunts and uncles treating their kids like a pension for when they get old. One of my older cousins literally moved out into a one bedroom apartment at 31 because he spent all his 20’s giving his money to his parents It’s such bullshit honestly and the parents don’t seem to see anything wrong with how they basically crippled him and damned him into continuing the cycle of living in poverty

This is so true... Bc they help their families and its all bc of "utang na loob" stigma that filipino culture has. I kind of hate it bc if i won't give, my family will start to say im selfish and useless, but what im trying to do is that I finished my studies and have a job and save money for my career in the future and they just dont see the bigger future. Dear filipino parents, you send your children to school to get educated, to be prepared for their future, and yes it is your obligation to support them but the problem is that you always have this stigma that right after they finish their studies you expect them to have a job and help you in your daily expenses at home but did you also forgot that they are also preparing for the life that awaits for them? this is true. there's also the culture of if you're working abroad, you're rich. Funny story, im currently studying to finish my bachelor's degree in North America. So that means i have student loans. My relatives in the Ph. always asks me for money every time we communicate. Meanwhile, i see them posting on social media partying every weekend while i spend my weekends working part time while being a full-time student.

Ever since my Filipino mom always reminds me the only reason she birthed me and my siblings is so we would do the chores for them and someday give the family name an outstanding reputation (through becoming a lawyer/doctor). I realize now why my older siblings chose to live in the other side of the city. My family survives on debt and dependency. I wish I was never born into my family.

My dad was a great dad. He died two years ago, and I miss him every day. He taught me to believe that I could achieve anything I wanted to. My dad made a lot of bad choices though when he was alive. Many were financial. At one point he asked me to rent him one of the houses I own. I refused because I thought to myself that if my dad wasn't my dad then I wouldn't rent him my house based on his financial history. My dad also asked me to sell him my car on loan. I refused. Same reason. After he died I thought hard about those decisions and whether I regretted not giving him more financial assistance when he was alive. That was a painful thought. I asked my mom what she thought. She said I did the right thing. I think she was right. I believe that if my dad is looking down on me from heaven now he is proud of the hard decisions I made, and he probably thinks I made the right choice. Being dependent to a family member who has a job, is a Filipino culture that has been practiced by many. This is the kind of culture that I really don't like. You're absolutely right. Giving money to your family member is hurting them. You're not teaching them to fish but to constantly beg money. I hate giving the money that I work hard for a lazy family member.

I would agree with you, If the living standard was the same as in the US, where opportunities are more equal w/ a functioning social welfare. I couldn't agree with you more. My siblings didn't get any money from me as they never gave me money. Our parents were sensible enough to provide us with the best education they can afford. After that, it was up to us to do what we can with our lives. We're now all in our middle ages. Except for one who can be considered rich by philippine standards, everyone else is doing quite well on their own financially, not rich, but certainly not poor, even by American standards. My parents, God bless them, taught us not to rely on other people to make a living. They didn't spoil us with material things, although they had the capacity to do so. It was, "you want something?...EARN IT!" We didn't understand that when when we were young because we were quite well-off. I kinda resented them for it. I realized I was wrong when it was time for me to live life on my own. Here's to sensible parents!
