100% like that. I was in the edge of learning (without being a programmer) ActionScript 3, bought even the O'Reilly book, long ago... Working with a friend programmer (I used to make all the graphics). The bucks to be made from web games were nice, specially in the way we made it (a distributor would purchase it for some money, it was every time pretty much a sure sell. ) . The whole thing changed in very few months. Like from night to day. We parted ways, and the few people remaining at this, needed to totally change their focus and ways of doing. Was not only a coding change, as back then JS and HTML 5 would not provide a solid substitute of what Flash brought. Today, yep, but business changed a lot. Similar to what happened to a bunch of shareware games developers in its days. Indeed, in several moments in time. This is a constant in every IT job I've had or freelance activity, full time and not.

I am a software engineering student and my father always tells me to focus on programming fundementals I didn't get what he was trying to tell me but after I watched your viedeos, I understand it very well thank you for every thing I am now working on fundamentals I know it works very well before I get in to college, I was good at C#, C++ and a little php at college we studied Java it was new for me but so easy in only one week I learned everything that is necessary without any course or without help of college and I am going to concentrate more on fundamentals because I want to learn Python ---------------------------------------------- here I have a question dear Stefan what is the best way to study? I mean study on textbooks and normal books to expand my programming skills or online courses or videos? I don't know really what to do!

you are right , frameworks and languages change , reveale and die every decade or maybe every year , the thing is that people should focus on learning algorithm , how to decompose a problem , how to make a conception to the problem and how to implement the conception even with a pseudo code . they also need to learn design patterns . Learning a programming language is easy , the laziest way to do it is buying a 30 hour course on udemy , but the most difficult thing is how to implement and how to solve :D

I'm in a computer science program and not that school makes a difference in this field but the class was learning the fundamentals and it greatly increased my aptitude for quickly using other languages. I'm thinking of signing up for your course as well I'm looking to take that next step and from what you offer it looks like a great deal to upgrade my skill level to the next. Thanks for this video.

Awesome video Stef, as usual you are 100% correct. At the end of the day you are manipulating binary code to perform a task, and to achieve that it's best to know the fundamentals of computing and programming, the rest is finding the right command or function to perform what is desired. In the end the problem determines what technologies and languages you will need.

Hey there, I just discovered your channel and I thought I would throw this question in the ether to see if you or your community would be interested in answering. I'm finishing my second semester in Computer Engineering right now. The past two semesters, I've only learned Java (and a little bit of SQL but that doesn't really count). Next semester (all the way in September!) I'll be starting C. I won't have any Java courses. So, my question: I have all of May to September to myself. I work full time over the summer but I can still teach myself at home. Should I continue developing my Java skills? Should I get a head start in C? Or should I learn a different language? Thanks in advance!

Actually that's the same question i would like to get the answer of it right now Because right now i'm in the same situation you were in it bafore a few years ago So my question for you did you stuck with java until you grasp the fundamentals of the programming in it and mastering programming with it or you find yourself learning the fundamentals of programming in c or c++ for better? I'm learning java right now so what should i do Should i keep going with java until mastering it and grasp the programming fundamentals Or should i go after c++ or c Because they're better for programming fundamentals and building logic?

Agree with that. If I am hiring developers , I look for basic software engineering skills. If candidate has good foundations, he will learn the tools, frameworks and languages. if you are experienced programmer , do work with young developers. It is 2 way learning. it will help you to unlearn some stuff. It is very important to unlearn to learn new stuff in programming.

Zen of C Language Principles? I'm just very curious! Has there ever been prepared a "Zen of C" of Principles just like Python's 20 Principles "Zen of Python"? I'm thinking of something that adheres to the first and second edition C language Principles of what was written in Ritchie's own C Programming language book? Has anyone since then even tried to condense it all into it's own "Zen of C" version? I would really appreciate if you can guide me to and show me where I can find this information anywhere! I'm only into the C language and not interested in C++ at all. Have a nice day!

Hello, first of I would like to say I love your videos. I find them extremely helpful and give great insight into the programming world. Secondly, I myself am now the second year completed college student about to go into my junior year and am majoring in software engineering. I've been coding all throughout high school, I teach kids how to code for my tutoring job and have a lot of experience going through hackathons and some freelancing. I'm comfortable with mobile apps, reactJS for web development, systems programming in java, but I dont know how to get an internship at a good company. My gpa is not the best around 3.2 and my school is alright, I feel if given the chance I could excel at any job but how do i actually get into the internship so I can progress in computer science.

Step 1: Build a site showcasing your skills. Step 2: Check around your local area, and see what type of programming they are doing. Step 3: Build a small project using that tech, and showcase it on your site. Step 4: Then reach out to companies and reference your site. When you send out emails, expect many rejections and expect many no answer - that is normal. Keep your emails professional and short and to the point - nobody has time to read long essays in the business world. Let me know how it goes.

Some good points here. Languages do die. You just need to focus on using modern tools. Also, Python, PHP, MySQL and javaScript? Which year you living in Stefan? Yes I agree on the first one and the last one, but PHP and mysql as hot languages? more like Node.js, PostgresQL and Redis!!

Well maybe MySQL/PHP are really good for freelancing. Plus you may need to work on or update older websites that use these technologies. PHP is still super popular (maybe not in the job market, but it's not useless).
