I just started studying to become a programmer, its composed of 4 semesters but, kind of expensive and after graduating I do not know if I will get jobs,,, so its very frustrating already,,, would you suggest me to just quick and study by own with cheap online courses and keep trying or, is a degree helps ?

Because Laravel is still (2024) slow af. If you want to develop a bigger, scalable application, it 's not recommended to use Laravel at all. There are benchmarks out there, that compare the most used PHP frameworks and Laravel almost takes the last place at all of them. That 's no matter of PHP. That 's a matter of Laravel and how it is build. It 's still a PHP framework in a traditional way. It brings you all that you might don 't need. Other frameworks like Laminas (former Zend Framework) and Symfony have evolved into component collections. You can install only the components you want to use and might need. Laravel for simple websites? Yeah, sure. Use it. But if you want to develop APIs, that are used by more than two users, don 't use Laravel.

Now in 2024, Wordpress is running over 40% (!!!) of all websites in the world. That is mind blowing 🤯 😮

Uncle Stef, Thanks again for an awesome video and great advice. I am currently a Junior DBA working on completing my A.A.S. in "Database Administration"; I used to invest in index funds but hadn't recently. This video helped me realize I need to get back to investing for compound interest and much more. Thanks again for the good advice as always!

Late to the show and someone probably already said it, but another thing Laravel is very often used for is to build very powerful and robust admin dashboards, customer support microsites and APIs. Of course those projects wouldn't appear as amazing websites on the internet. I've worked with Heineken before (14.6b USD net worth company) and we've created admin dashboards and apis for them in Laravel.

One thing I forgot:c++ brings you closer to the machine, and you get less obsessed with "coding". You start to see programming for what it is: changing the state of the machine ie of the computer.

Why does uncle Stef dislikes c++ so much? Some of us have a specific eay of learning:I couldn't understand anything in those easy languages. I had no idea what web developers were saying. My older brother, a javascript and php dev tried to teach me frontend. All I remembered was word salad:html, css, js, drupal, joomla, bootstrap, less, saas, codeigniter, laravel, cms this and that, wordpress, yadda yadda yadda. I almost gave up on programming. Until I came to c++ for knowledge and understanding. Writing pong game in pure terminal gives you better understanding than making portfolio website. Progrmming is not like learning kid songs out loud in elementary school.

Approaching things differently now after watching what you said. Thank you! Going to check out all your other videos.

Wife's client had an existing Wordpress site with custom code that did something far outside Wordpress' expertise. It was painful to use - and almost useless. It literally sometimes took over 30 seconds for it to react to a button press. Using a side-learning-project I'd written a few years before ( for an online game ), I wrote a new SPA app that reacted within 1/2 second, and a couple of new ( and thus far unique ) features. Over the subsequent 4 years, I have added quite a few features in my spare time, and the number of users has grown to a couple thousand. Now the client is pivoting and attempting to sell to a few larger clients - any of whom would have 2,000 - 4,000 users and concomitantly larger storage requirements and such. Server-side, it uses PHP + SlimPHP + MariaDB. Browser uses AngularJS ( 1.x ). New requirements are primarily security, SSO, and integration with a google API. This requires me to FINALLY look at scaling, client separation, and so-on. After five years. And, it's not certain he'll sell to these entities - but it's quite possible. So, I'll be going to laravel server-side and Vue for the browser. Though it's hard to type with your fingers crossed.

@miltondiaz24513 күн бұрын
Hi, Uncle Stephan. You stated that 99.9 % of chance, our website or app won't be needed to scale. My question is from where did you get that information? From my point of view, an app will need to scale in some scenarios such as 1. Increased user traffic. 2. Higher data volume. 3. Performance requirements 4. Geographic expansion 5. Feature expansion 6. reability and redundancy 7. Regulatory compliance 8. Cost efficiency 9. User behavior changes. 10. Competitive pressure. And so on.
@Jollyprez2 күн бұрын
From my experience with two SAAS projects, you may be surprised at how long you can go without worrying about scaling. Project one - a POS system / online ordering for a small chain ( 8-10 units ) - with 150,000 customer records, 2.5 million transactions over ten years, etc. was able to use a single linode virtual server on the next-to-smallest partition ( $10 / month ). That particular project was extremely efficient, clearly, doing most of its work in the browser, with a RESTful server interface. 2nd project ( currently ongoing ) has much higher data requirements - lots of content to download, though not much video - is used by about 2,000 active users. Using Cloudflare for caching, it's on the SMALLEST linode server ( $6 / month ) and has never gone near even 50% at peak use. Again, most work is done in the client SPA. I AM adding some extensive analytics and OTEL to the new version, but I still expect to not need much more firepower. A little goes a long way these days.
@pmrebel27332 күн бұрын
Most apps for regular day to day task doesn't need scaling. It's nodejs course creators that have hype this crap to everyone to pressurized them to use or switch to node

Hi Stefan, I watched a video in which you mentioned a blood condition which was treated by a chinese medicine doctor. I think you were referring to ITP. I have the same condition. Would mind sharing details name/contact of the doctor.
@StefanMischook2 күн бұрын
Go see any TCM practitioner. Basically, you need to balance your body's system, and the ITP will gradually go away. If I recall, this is doable as long as your spleen isn't inflamed. You need to remove stress from your life, not exercise too hard and eat clean food, But you also need to Chinese herbs as well. My doctor moved away decades ago, and due to age, he has almost certainly passed away.

I'm relatively "new", I'm 23 right now, but I think, and that's my opinion, that to a guy to be so likeable, as you said in 3:20, he will need to have a girlfriend/wife that pushes him up. I 100% believe that being alone and just living by yourself won't build up that "friendly" and "happy" persona 😅 (Sorry for the misspellings)

I'm an accountant in elementary school in Serbia and I'm currently developing accounting software for public funding users (such as an elementary school 😅 ). I've used 2 different accounting softwares at work and I found many flaws in both. And one of them is really expensive, the other is cheap. They are both desktop apps. I'm using Java Spring Boot and Nuxt. I'm almost done, now I'm building different templates for various reports, which is one of the last steps. It took me about a months so far. Last year I developed invoice management web app which helped me learn a lot. I attended two Java internships at large companies where I also learned a lot. But it's difficult to find junior developer position in Serbia right now, so I'm just working as an accountant and developing web app as a hobby. But my goal is to sell it to someone from 2025. I'm going to use it at work, but it's illegal to charge due to conflict of interest. Sorry for the long comment. Cheers ❤
@pejko893 күн бұрын
I also have a question. What should I learn about database security? Given I'm a self taught beginner. I'm confident in my Java skills, I manage to build what I intend using Nuxt, but I worry whether users data will be securely stored if I host it on Railway for example?
