I stayed in Quanzhou for quite some time, and it quickly became one of my favorite cities in China.
Foreign tourists are rare, but Quanzhou is a hidden gem. And I have enough reasons to say that. As the birth place of Fujianese culture and the first Chinese trade ports that opened up to the outside world Quanzhou is the place to find a huge diversity in Fujian Province:
⭕️ Kong Fu and Shaolin Temple
⭕️ Beautifully preserved historical city quarter (UNESCO sites!)
⭕️ Great food, laid back, and stunning landscape
⭕️ Incredibly diverse religion, and you can find temples, mosques, churches...
and the list goes on...
In short, it is a super laid-back city with modern charm, and an ancient soul!
Join me on this adventure :)

Western media has projected China in a very one dimensional image. We forget that so much culture, food art and technology we see today comes from China. The people of China still carry that with them. Your videos convey this so well. You are doing a very important job. Thank you.

Are you nuts? As long as you make a positive content like this in China of course it would be allowed. That’s what “one-dimensional image” means.

People forget what happened in 1949 let me remind you The culture revolution this is when Mao destroyed the history of China in its entirety In the past 15 years China has started to repair the damage Most places you see are no older than 15 year’s hundreds of fake ancient villages have popped up and to be honest they are abysmal Food here in China, if you like the mix of garlic soy sauce and ginger then you are ok because everything has these ingredients including chickens feet heads and butts dogs cats and rats I’ve been here 22 years and I’ve yet to have eaten anything Chinese that I can honestly say was good So if you are thinking of coming here chose a city that that has authentic western restaurants and stay in top hotels like the Hilton otherwise you will starve And don’t forget it’s Chinese culture to rip off foreigners in shops bars and restaurants Good luck travelers

All the Chinese cities in your video are clean, people look content, structures are beautifully maintained and business are prosperous; I hope this is how China be as a whole. I’m an american Chinese never being to china, and I’m so glad to see my motherland is beautiful, peaceful and progressing. My mother described the common free tea offering on street in her home town, witness it still exists just warms my heart. Kind people offer drinks to strangers and strangers accept the offer with trust, this is how society should be.

I put Quanzhou on my bucketlist a few years ago after seeing a video from Blondie in China, before I was not aware of the city. Over time I discover that I've underrated Fujian province as a whole (as many other parts of China) and your videos confirm it. Now waiting for cheaper tickets, flights to China are crazy expensive at the moment. Curious to see what more you'll uncover visiting all the other provinces of China.

Glad to see my hometown here and good work! 6:15 - 面线糊 is not made from rice, nothing but ultra-thin noodles. The soup base comprises meat (chicken/port bone idk) and seafood (shrimps, crabs, maybe fish too?) 9:09 - 中山路 Zhongshan Road is one of the first roads receiving modernised concrete pavement in the city, constructed back in the 1920s. The buildings adopt the southeastern Asian style, brought back by old Quanzhou ppl making their living overseas. The clocktower 钟楼 (the white tower 10:28) on the road is a must-visit. 16:18 - 摩尼教 Manichaeism also exists in Quanzhou, with 草庵 Cao'an being the last trace of Manichaeism existence in China. 19:42 - Had you been to the mosque it is probably worthy of paying a visit to 灵山伊斯兰教圣墓, an Islamic tomb constructed in the 1300s. 22:06 - 洛阳桥 Luoyang bridge completed in the 1000s is China's very first harbour bridge. Note the bow-shaped bases to protect the piers from the tide. As well, the river and the bridge were named after the ancient Chinese capital city of Luoyang, when its residents and the royal families fled to Quanzhou to escape wars.

I visited Quanzhou with a small British tour group in 2007. We spent most of our time in a Buddhist temple where we were served multiple dishes of various kinds & flavors of tofu. Your walk through the peace & quiet of the temple grounds brought back the feeling of being there. Thank you for showing so much more of this beautiful & ancient place! Btwn, Feng Shui would dictate the need for protection in the tight alley ways, hence, lions, etc. carved into the stone.

Hello, I am writing to express my gratitude for your wholesome and beautiful videos. For the past three years, entry restrictions combined with constant sound around and real deteriorating relations between China and my continent of origin and love Europe have led my love for China to fade slowly and steadily. China was envisioned by me as an ever more digitalized, commercialized, urbanized modern dystopia that has no place for an architecture, nature, slow paste, and people-loving human being like myself. The thought of having to live in Shanghai, Beijing, or worst Shenzen let me break out in cold sweat. Your videos have shone a light on earnest human beings going about their lives with a deep sense of living, community, and aesthetics. Places not bustling, not digitalized, not over-urbanized, preserved nature, and walkable and bikeable cities and townships also exist in China. This should be pretty obvious to anybody with a commonsensical mindset but to be honest, I was just too stuck. So thank you earnestly for helping me rediscover my love for China, energizing my language and general studies, and "repassionizing" my bread-earning activities.

Thank you again Yan, for another most enjoyable episode on China’s hidden city gems. Quanzhou, Fujian will be on my travel bucket list now! I hope these sort of traditional cities will be well preserved and not get gutted to be modernized! I so enjoyed visiting Dali, Shuhe( Lijiang), Yangzhou back in 2014. I much prefer visiting laid back traditional townships, cities China than the mega 1st tier cities! I understand Quanzhou also has a great tradition in puppet art. I saw a CGTN show on Puppetry of Fujian, but can’t recall if it is in Quanzhou or not. Btw, i also have been to Shiraz, Iran…glad you mentioned the connection. Maritime silk road would be a fascinating history to look into! Thank you again!👍☮️❤️

Quanzhou is my birth place and I got to spend six years of my childhood and many summer vacations there with my grandparents. It was a lot of good memories. I spotted YAN wearing this t-shirt with “泉州” in the front in many episodes and I figured she must have had one made in Quanzhou and the thought brought me here with no difficulty. Thanks for your work ! I like your travologues a lot!

The 'Ba-Le" fruit is a tropical fruit native to the Caribbean sea / Latin America. Ba-Le is a Taiwanese name. In the west people call it Guava in English, or Guayaba in Spanish. In Cuba you can find a very nice ice-drink with the Guayaba juice in street corners everywhere, I l am a big fan of it too :) In Minnan dialect we call it "nah-boa".
