You forgot soo much as the most important points, France is bordered by 6 countries Spain, Italy Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium and had the UK near Northern West which facilitates exchanges, trades, communication and relations. Adding to that France has the Mediterranean coast and the Manche coast and the Atlantic Coast which facilitates also Import-Export by ship and gives beautiful beaches all around France. We're not in 1940 anymore don't bring stuff from the past as the relations got better with every bordered country.

One thing I've learned for two past years - France has really worked this out. Even their southern borders were altered, when they took Roussillon, but their propagation to the East is just excited. All those Franche-Comte, Lorraine, Roussillon, Savoie and others didn't belong to "original" France. Just compare French borders after Hundred Years War in 1953 and now.

He's just mistaking the Maginot line with the Sigfried line... But forgive him,he's american. Even if i love them, you know how it is when you have to talk with them about geography or history...Better talking with a child
