The fact that anyone would disagree with the proposition that more people go into less debt and achieve their goals faster is itself an indictment of the educational system. Society is truly working to keep itself down.

I feel the cost of a program, should have some correlation, with expected earnings. If individuals continue to spend more on the education of a study; and the pay rate doesn't offset the cost; student loans will steadily go into default.

French guy here. Going to college costs you only 150$ per year here but degrees are basically worthless and masters are worth less and less each year. Even though you won't have debts to pay, you'll spend the rest of your life paying for the other students with your taxes, including those who restart university again and again because they don't wanna work. Our money from ou work is taken to pay for the huge batch of psychology and sociology students who got themselves in basically dead-end sectors. If someone believe in a project with very few opportunities, great but why should we sponsorize them ?

American college is over rated though. The only reason why many young people are very interested in it it’s because of the experience they hope not to missed out. Else it’s just another high school where you have to pay massive tuition to pay the understaffed instructors and pay massive amount to the lazy administrators.

@@3mara36 I got a PhD in science in France and he cost me $150/year and I was paid during my three years of doctorate. Contrary to what @sachaketchummaitredegalar said, my degree is not worthless and appreciated in the US. Most people in science labs here are foreigners, so the US benefit from people who got their education paid for by their country but refuse to have a similar system here. I find it interesting

Whether it's free or not is irrelevant. The problem is too many young people are sleepwalking into college to study subjects that have little to no value in the working world, because they have been taught that college is the only viable next step available to them. Many western democratic countries are experiencing this same problem, but it's worse in the US because you go straight from school to college. There is nothing in-between. In the UK for example, compulsory education ends at 16. You can then start to specialise by going onto further education in the form of technical and academic colleges (for free), and then progress into higher education (university) if you want, but you must pay for.

Giving away free stuff and money never gets overall good results, because if it's free, people who receive it are also free to let it go to waste. Subsidizing is the way to go, where invested effort and cost is rewarded with additional rewards and returns. This way, only the deserving hard worker will benefit, and lazy wastrels will have no share in it.

People here are so full of shit. Free college and universities (practically free, there might be some nominal fees), are absolutely worth it for most people going through them. If you study some something ridiculous like "gender studies", poetry and so on, of course you are fuc**d, and that's on you. But generally, you definitely get better pay and easier jobs with proper education. I've done both, hard manual labor with hourly pay, and loads of overtime, and now cozy desk (mostly) job with monthly salary, so i know the difference. I earn the same doing easier job 37,5 hours a week with education, as i was doing 50-55 hours a week, much harder physical work.
