Our culture seems to value romance or "finding the perfect mate" over lasting friendships, and yet human history shows this focus to be a relatively recent development. In this talk, Dr. Marisa Franco explores whether friendships are just as important - or possibly more important - than romance. Dr. Marisa G. Franco is a professor, speaker, and friendship expert whose forthcoming book Platonic: The Surprising New Science of How to Make-and Keep-Friends as an Adult debuts with Penguin Random House in September 2022. She writes about friendship for Psychology Today and has been a featured connection expert for major publications like The New York Times, The Telegraph, and Vice. She speaks on belonging at corporations, government agencies, non-profits, and universities across the country, including Harper Collins Publishers, Cisco, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The Department of State. You can follow her on Instagram (@DrMarisaGFranco) or sign up for her free quiz (www.DrMarisaGFranco.com) to assess your friendship strengths. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"Platonic love is enough... your life isn't lesser, and your connections aren't either." Love how this TED Talk elevates the value of friendship! I think the world would be a less scary/less lonely place if we all recognized the value of friendship, and if people knew their friends would be there to catch them regardless of their romantic relationship status.

The tricky part is that friends often become unavailable when they form a non-platonic relationship and a nuclear family, so it can be disappointing

The true meaning of friendship for me is when two people or more, willing to always be there for each other no matter what happens.

I agree, friendships are so important. I think as we transition to adulthood, it becomes harder to maintain those friendships and we prioritize our friendships lower than our partner and family. However I think it's important to know how to maintain these relationships so that we still have friends in our life

This talk can really help free us from the constricting narrative of romantic love being the most important. Thank you, Marisa, for your framing, sharing your story, and for dismantling this hierarchy of love. Your work is incredibly important, and I look forward to reading your upcoming book!

As more and more people really consider staying single as a better alternative to a subpar relationship, understanding how amazing platonic love can be is so important! Great talk.

“The wellness group did heal me” but it was because of the friendship and meeting up with people that loved me.” I love this statement. Debunking love, marriage, power and value versus shame, love, expression and friendship. Thank you Dr. Marissa Franco for bringing a microscope on this valuable topic. We need to bring this conversation forward into the mainstream! P.S. I bought your book and the audio version!

As someone who has struggled to maintain romantic relationships but have been good at platonic ones, this video speaks to me. I’ve been told by previous partners (& have even been broken up with) that I value my friends too much. Before I knew about the stats or the research, I intrinsically knew that platonic friendship is important. Good to know that I’m on the right track.

This was beautiful, I loved every minute. I love reminding my friends of my love for their existence and how grateful I am of our friendship, I think it’s extremely important to have that human connection with someone not in a “romantic” way. Thank you for sharing, I will be showing my friends💛

Amatonormativity makes everyone think romance is needed and is more important than any other love when other types of love are just as or even more important. Like, it's crazy how much of a negative effect amatonormativity has on us. It's been hard for me to learn that as an aromantic asexual. But it's necasssary if I am going to be happy. Treat your platonic relationships with as much love and care as you do your romantic ones.

I don't understand getting friends on dates, it's really looks more like polyamory to me. If your friend is in commited and closed relationship with their partner, they can't go dating - it's cheting.
