Fixes stalling & dying out issue caused by the vacuum created by consumed fuel from a tank with no relief. After cleaning out your carburetor; and checking for adequate spark, compression, and fuel, this may prove to be the answer to the problem. A mower that cuts out just minutes after starting may be suffering from vapor lock. Similar symptoms are seen in old Tecumseh magnetos (not covered here). Common symptoms of this problem include the engine sounding like it's running out of gas (on a full tank), starving for fuel, hunting, surging, jogging, revving, unable to keep a steady idle, Usually shutting off a few minutes after starting; then starting again after a long pause. Some users may not have the time to immediately obtain a new cap. Puncturing the fuel cap is a great temporary solution to the vapor lock issue.

Great video. My mower after priming would run for 5 seconds and stop. After viewing your video, I screwed the cap off slightly, primed the engine and started the mower. After the mower started, i slightly tightened the cap and started mowing.

Lame. The ads covered him up completely at the end when puncturing the cap. Useless.

Thanks bud ,saved my life! It seems like, way back when, we used to put wood clothes pins on gas lines for some reason. Cant remember why but dad got the car running again

To build "back pressure" in those old manual fuel pumps to get them pumping fuel again. Low on fuel more than likely. lol Got some air in the system. At least that was my experience with an old Ford.

Nice video - just FYI it is 'perforate' not whatever you spelled out on the paper.

I guess you could loosen the cap slightly which would have the same effect.

My mower starts on the first pull when cold, but if I run it until it's hot and then shut it off, it is damn near impossible to start it again. I can hear a sizzle coming from the air intake and if I open the air filter case, I can see heavier-than-air vapor pouring out. It seems like, if I face it downhill, it will eventually start again (but it might just be that it has cooled off enough by then). (When the fuel is low, I've noticed it'll sputter uphill and smooth out downhill - but this particular problem happens regardless of fuel level.) It runs fine both before shutting it off and after eventually getting it to restart. Does this sound like it could be vapor lock? If not, any idea what it could be and how to fix it?

Aww man. Been a year, but for future reference, yes, that is a sign of vapor lock. Only not in the direction shown in this video. You experienced a positive pressure vapor lock. Heated gas in the tank builds pressure. That pressure usually gets vented via the cap. When that venting method fails to release pressure, the fuel begins to flow in reverse in the carb, thus shutting the engine down very suddenly in most cases. Remove the gas cap for a second or two then tighten it. Push the primer until you hear the fuel squirt into the engine, then restart the mower. (ear close to the air filter helps in hearing the fuel being injected) Until you vent or replace the cap, expect to have to slightly open the cap for a moment every couple minutes while mowing. It's frustrating, but will get the yard finished. lol
