Jon, jbh1126 an extremely talented automotive photographer based in Southern California and New York City. He's shot everything from the Bugatti Veyron and McLaren 720S to classic Porsche 911s and off-road Alphas. With a need for something more raw than his BMW i3 on the weekends to enjoy on Angeles Crest Highway he set out to find an E46 M3 with the intention of turning it into a street-track build with a half cage, gutted interior, suspension improvements and some engine performance modifications. When the E36 M3 in this video turned up on Facebook marketplace, he didn't turn it down. Hear why and his experience so far by watching this video. Enjoy!

Here in Australia the e36 m3 3.2 and the E46 m3 are the exact same price... It took me over a year to decide which one to purchase... The e36 m3 won. A lot more rare... easier to maintain, built like a train. The e46 with sub frame issues, rod bearing and SMG pump put me off . The only thing wrong with e36 m3 is if you don’t know what to look for... it could be just 318is with a m3 kit....

What about 6-speed manual E46s that don't have to deal with the SMG pumps?

It’s been my goal to buy an E36, and ive been at work saving since. My boss has an E46 M3 and seeing that on a nice day sitting there, that sort of thing fuels my fire.

The E46 is gonna cost you much more to maintain. If you want to wrench on your car, and your more into the tuner scene, the E36 is better for you. Both are great cars.

@@Adam-rj4kg No, the E36 (USDM) engine is sort of a bored out and warmed over M52 from a 328 whereas the engine the E46 is a full on different engine with ITBs and lots of different parts.

my research on autotrader in the fall of 2020 leads me to believe that the e36 m3 and the e46 m3 (manual) are pretty comparable in price, at this point, for cars in equal condition. maybe a few thousand more for the 46's, but they usually have fewer miles. back when i was shopping for a 36 around 2013, these were considerably cheaper. really nice examples for 12-13k instead of 18-25k. so fwiw, i would contend the bottom has already been reached and they are on the up. bring a trailer has lots of good data, but it doesn't go back that far. certainly averaging around $15k is a reasonable estimate though.

I was wondering if you had more info on the schrick solid lifter kit. I have a m52 but was planning on swapping to m3 cams. I'm curious if the lifter kit would be easy to do over the cam swap. do you notice a difference in the top end and do you think it is worth the conversion? It'll run me 300 off of ecs tuning for m52

I paid 2 grand for a 1999 M3 auto vert with 163K miles. It’s at 171K miles and fully showroom restored 2 years later, with original engine and trans.

dudeee i got that fuel gauge problem in my e46!! feck!, soo annoying, had so much done and then the fuel gauge played up

how to turn a high end luxury/sports car to a honda civic. remove the full interior, and replace all glass with plastic. idk why bmw didnt do this from the get go

I can totally relate to his least favorite thing. I have a ‘97 M3 4/5...that has sucked my wallet dry this past year. The rest has been great. 😂

Tbf, many older cars that haven't done 100k+ maintenance are gonna suck your wallet dry. I had a 1JZ Cressida and everyone says its cheap and reliable, but its just not true. Older cars just need more care because of worn out parts, but when they work they're great! My E36 has by far been cheaper and enjoyable than my 1J.
