Very interesting as usual Andrew. 🙂 I am still on 5.1 as I don’t see a lot of content above that. I am surprised that there are so few comments about the source aspect. 🤔 I understand that we can probably get a Blu-ray or else with great multichannel content but I don’t think it is very common. Maybe you could tell us how you feel about the benefits of having 7, 11 (or whatever) channels when the source is rarely more than 5.1. 💁‍♂️
It's a very interesting and thoughtful comment, so Chief Product Officer Andrew Welker goes through the logic of what works best for your home theater configuration.
Looking forward to your comments on this video, as you can see, the comments and questions inspire the ideas for our next videos.

I say start by assembling the best 5.1 you can imo it's the most important then move up if you feel like you need to. That's what I did then I added a second sub and 2 height channels.

I think it's important to grow with the hobby. Jumping to 7.2.4 or above as a first system could be overwhelming. That said, the availability of ATMOS content on Disney+, Prime, Apple, Netflix is now really good. Watching the new Lord of the Rings series on Prime has been spectacular on my Atmos 7.2.4 setup.

You make a very good point! Jumping in with an Atmos setup for your first system would be very intimidating and difficult to setup. Starting small and upgrading over time usually gives you more experience with setup, and more appreciation for the improvements.

Hi Andrew. My main room is 7.1, my basement setup is 7.2 and I have a 2.0 vinyl listening area on the main level of the house. The room sizes were 100% responsible for the gear I selected. Your channel content is fantastic. Keep up the great work.

Thank you so much for the kind comment! Room sizes are so important to keep in mind when building a system. I regularly run into people who want to improve their systems as they are not happy and then find that either they have a small pair of bookshelf speakers in a massive room, or huge floorstanders in a tiny space.

I started with a 5.1 and ended up with a 7.2.4. I have a somewhat small living room, but pulled my sofa 2 feet away from the back wall and added 2 SVS prime elevation speakers exclusively for my rear channels. The difference was amazing. For 5.1 mixes I upscale to Auro-3D and the soundstage surrounds me with 360° sound, including from behind.

15 years seens I started my 5.1 and I’m not changing it Dolby atmos is a joke still only few movies actually have a full movie that uses the effects so until a few more years maybe I’ll upgrade

I guess we , like a lot of people, have an open space room with several doorways, steps etc ( not a nice rectangle ) . Our 5.1 system is all Axiom except for sub ( Velodyne ) . The speakers that make our system sound better than it should are the Q-8's ( The rears ). Regular speakers have a hard time in rooms like this. Having the Q's is almost like cheating. Enjoy the videos Andrew, keep them coming.

Yes, you are absolutely correct about the QS series speakers. So many homes are open-concept and lack symmetrical walls or boundaries, that it can be a nightmare to balance the sound AND fill the room. Non-directional models like the QS series can work wonders in these types of environments.

My room is 13 wide by 21 long. I use a 7.2 system. Using Axiom quad surrounds I feel no need for overhead speakers. I placed the surrounds about 2 feet above my ears and with the top tweeters in the surrounds pointing up already I get fly overs just fine. One Axiom sub in the front next to my m60's and a Dayton Audio sub kit in the back. I can bring down the house when needed.

Sounds like you have a well-optimized setup! This is one reason I prefer non-directional speakers for the surround channels.

Interesting thoughts to consider. I think it begs the question: how much should one invest in home stereo or even stereo if your space is not acoutsically (sic) "tuned"? Not sure if this was discussed earlier, but what should one do in terms of acoustic panelling A) to keep outside noise from entering the tuned space and B) "tuning" the room so one can enjoy the investment of a sound system? How does onme a[[roach this in anormal home environment with cars and kids buzzing about outside?
@AxiomHomeTheaters

Sound isolation and room treatment are two very different things. You are right that external noise can impact your enjoyment of your system. I’m not a fan of too much damping in typical rooms and in many cases carpet, rugs, or furniture can do the job. If you listen in the near-field (sit close to the speakers) you can also reduce the impact of the room on mid and high frequencies.

Thanks for the follow up video Andrew. Very interesting. 👍 It seems there is more Atmos content than I thought but I like your question about the « original encoding ». And I am not sure that non-English sources are as « rich » as English. 🤔 (I was surprised to find out about your 4.0 system, that’s unusual. I hope they’re all Axiom. 💁‍♂️)

No Axiom in my HT system, but speakers I designed (Mirage). I, of course, have Axiom (Bryston) in my main stereo setup!

I'm set up with 5.1 in both my 14x13 and 22x14 rooms. I've been meaning to add 2 Atmos speaker to the larger room, but have just been too lazy. But now Andrew's post has me looking, and it seems like Axiom has just the one ceiling speaker, the M3. I wouldn't have thought the M3 in-ceiling would pair well with anything other than the M3 bookshelf. So I have to ask, is the M3 ceiling speaker what Axiom recommends for Atmos? (In my case the larger room is M5s, VP100, M2s and a Hsu sub. And yes, I have also been meaning to swap out the M2s for QS4s, but I have to wait for the right time to "surprise" my wife.)
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters Жыл бұрын
Yes, I think the M3 in-ceiling is ideal for this application, unless you cannot get into the ceiling. In that case we are able to build a custom version of the M3 bookshelf that allows use of our ceiling bracket so that the M3 can be angled downwards.

@@alanderson4620 you're welcome, a lot of people can't, or don't want to, cut into their ceiling, so it seemed obvious to offer a solution for that. Glad you are enjoying the videos!

Hi Andrew, There more and more content on Netflix and Disney plus that support Dolby Atmos, plus 4K blue rays, so in ceiling speakers and rear channel is a must if you have the room for it, in my opinion. I'm curious, What are your speakers that go that low so you don't need any subs.
@AxiomHomeTheaters

Thank you, I am finding that there is more Atmos content out there than I had thought. The mains in my HT system are Mirage OM-6s…they have powered woofer sections, so technically I guess you could consider them subwoofers!

Andrew, what do you consider as a "small room"? Is it determined solely by total square footage?
@AxiomHomeTheaters
@AxiomHomeTheaters Жыл бұрын
Good question, as everyone has a different opinion. Acousticians usually consider anything that is not a large concert hall or theater to be a “small room”. In my references, I’m usually thinking about rooms smaller than 12 x 12 feet or so.

In the process now of adding 4 new height speakers (upgrade) to get back to a 5.1.4 setup. Using an AVR that has Atmos, DTS-X, and Auro-3D. I've had to purchase anything Auro-3D (music or movies) from Europe. I stick with physical to get the best audio options, streaming has a lot of catching up to do, and I doubt it will ever fully do so. Besides that, I prefer owning what I've paid for, rather than renting. I rip everything to my HTPC, and use the physical BRs or other types as backup. My next upgrade will probably be a house more suitable for my home theater system.

Fave upgrade plan: buy new house with a better home theater room / listening room. Also, important to have a Real Estate Agent who gets it! Thanks for sharing your set up, and agreed, owning is always the best solution for media.

Dolby Atmos 100%. Every Netflix TV Series that's US/NA based, and many otherwise, all support Atmos and have for about 4 years now. But beyond Netflix Atmos is harder to find in streaming services lol.

Thank you for filling me in! I wonder how much of that content is actually Atmos-encoded and what has been converted from a non-Atmos mix?

@@AxiomHomeTheaters My experience with the various streaming services is that while the audio stream of many shows/movies has the Atmos metadata, there are very few sounds placed above the listener. I've found it a bit disappointing. Unless it's my speakers that aren't very good. If anyone can point to something on Netflix or Disney+ that makes effective use of the overhead speakers that would be appreciated.
@chrisrolfe6917
@chrisrolfe6917 Жыл бұрын
@David Mander I certainly agree that physical is better, but I'm not sure the Atmos mix is much different between the streaming and physical versions of movies. I think that even the surround channels on a regular 5.1 mix get underutilized. In most movies it feels as though the audio mix is an afterthought.
