This was a very important video because most people only see the glitter and glamour. They don't understand how hard some of the top DJs work and how brutal the touring schedule can be. Health is wealth and DJs should never forget to be conscious of their own well being. Great to hear that you're taking that one day a week to have some real "you time" Luke.

I absolutely did the ~ sign-off for sanity ~ thing years ago. I'm not a DJ or producer, I was an IT Engineer trying to keep up with the ever evolving world of Tech to stay relevant. I had a breakdown and quit IT for good. While I was in IT, I was also doing the clubbing almost every night as well, so that had a hand in my stresses as well. After the IT breakdown, I didn't do anything for about 6 months, then I started to "take it easy" and decided to work at night clubs. Well, that turned into another stressful thing and I ended up in the Hospital for 2 months and the Dr's discovered that I had a variety of health problems (HIV+, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Aortic Dissection (Tear in the Aorta coming from my heart), Degenerative Disks (Arthritis and bone spurs) in my back, neck, knees, elbows, shoulders, wrists and hands, etc.). Along the way, my father died 2014 and my uncle died 2016. Now I am left with little money (I get about $400us a month from 30% Veterans Administration Disability) I take care of my elderly mother, and I have to say, I have never felt more peaceful. Moral of the story, take care of YOU and your family instead of chasing the all mighty dollar and you will enjoy life much much more!

Without a doubt something ive began to work on, time management, while completing what need to get done, leave time to breath! Get in touch with friends family, and oneself. I'm a working machine, working construction alone is really exhausting, on top of that school and working on shaping my sound. Deep breath, and learn to sometimes say no, I need a break.

Every year I hit this wall, I am just an average DJ/Dad/with Day job, my season ramps up April and runs strong till October, some years with all I have to do I get 4 days off 100% to myself. This year more than most I could feel it weigh on me as I watched my family not need me when I am around. Cat's in the Cradle by Harry Chapin never had so much meaning as it did this year. Stay strong Luke, and to everyone trying to move mountains. Family over money is my new focus. Trade gigs for dad time with my kid, money for time with the wife, and the stage for the company of friends. Hope you manage something similar. Thanks Luke, your always a great source of insight.

Hey Luke, I agreed with you a hundred percent regarding what you and the guests said. I’ve had the honour to meet and chat with Armin after one of his show last year. As a huge fan of his, it really pains to be up close and see how tired him and his crew are and those big bugs hanging under his eyes. As much as I would love to constantly hearing new music and going to all the big festivals to see all of you perform, deep down I wish all of you be a little more well rested and happier. It’s only fair since you guys have brought many joyous moment to the world.

Thx Luke for this vlog. It’s important too realise that your brain needs rest and therefore your advise to stop working one day of the week it’s the right move. You can’t function and do great things if your brain is doing overtime 24/7. Always try to create the balance between work, play and rest. Hardwell will be back but he will be different, he needs this time in life for himself, to grow and be the person with a more balanced lifestyle because there is a life going on outside clubs and festivals too. I’m glad you realise that Luke. The best life for you from a fellow human!

Being an anxious person myself I deffinetly support Hardwell's descision. I'm also a DJ, and even though I don't work alone because I'm in a DJ duo and we do share the stress and the problems that are present in this bussines, in the beggining of the year I started to have problems with anxsiety and pannic atacks. Only a few months past since the first episode that I had and i can tell you I'm doing very well but its all because I changed a few things in my life. I still perform and work on music but If for example I feel like I don't want to play at a certain party because I'm tired or because of some other reason I cancel the performance if it's not too late or just don't accept the invitation for that gig. Big mistake that young DJs make because of the hunger for succes or the money is to accept every gig at any cost and not to be able to say no to some requests and conditions that promoters and club owners have that are usually stupid and that puts a lot of pressure on you which collects over some period of time. If you sum up all those things and all the stress that your body has to deal with because you work at night and don't have enough of sleep your nervous system explode eventualy (like mine) and than the anxiety kicks in. I'm fortunate enough to have people around me that understood my problems and because I had some one to relly on during those bad times, but a lot of people are affraid to talk about this or they think that others will think that they are weird of crazy. This is not the way to deal with this problems! Talk to people, get out of your comfort zone and don't be afraid of it. The best thing that i learned from this experience is that YOU are responsible for your problems because of your deccisions, but YOU are also the cure for them. Don't fight with yourself because its very hard to win the battle, instead try to enjoy every moment and try to relax as much as possible when you are not performing. Chears!

I like to compare this topic to the grind of professional athletes too: There are actually extensive programs that athletes go through that teach them specific behaviors that help them maintain optimal performance and stamina over long periods of time for their demanding careers. What's ironic is there are still no programs like this that are impacting touring musicians and DJs like Hardwell and you guys! Luke, How do you think up and coming DJs can take this advice without missing out on opportunities to make it big?

Just learn to say NO, that is enough, to yourself. Fame can be tricky and lead to greed and selfishness, especially if you have a family. Touring for years in excess is not about making a career, its keeping your place on the spot light, at least that what some artists think and by thinking like this they end up screwing a lot in their personal life. 1-2 festivals a month or big gigs should do you fine, more than that is just creating a bigger demand . Having just 1 day off in a week its just wrong when you have kids, it doesn't matters how much time you spend on facetime.

Wise choice both Hardwell & LBL, a DJ is human too let's not forget that. Besides, one can always make a big comeback.

I'm so glad DJs are now realising what they're doing to their bodies, it's about time. It's a shame Avicii didn't realise sooner.
